Quick search didn't show this had been asked before which surprised me.

A lot of neurodivergent (ND) stuff on social media these days. Got me thinking I am definitely ND maybe ADHD. I always think "surely everyone is like that though???" I struggle to comprehend how anyone could think of do things differently to me.

So Mumsnet - do you think you are neurotypical or neurodiverse?

Yabu - neurotypical

Yanbu - neurodiverse

@JustAnotherManicNameChange

Yeah, I get it, I really do.

Sometimes it comes across as dismissive, I don't mean you or the poster I quoted earlier but there are so many people who have jumped to ND when actually there is fuck all wrong with them. The idea that you can be autistic and not have impairment makes no sense and rules me somewhat.

I am reactive today though and I have apologised.

I saw you apology, and I think that was a really nice and decent thing to do. I also get that it's hard to see the other side, especially when you have had negative experiences.

My post wasn't a telling off, it was an explanation from someone who uses those words a lot and why. However, after reading your posts I'll be a bit more mindful that it could be upsetting to others and sound dismissive. So it's not all bad.

I don't know. Two years ago I'd have said NT. Now waiting for DS9 to be assessed, and realising all the signs I missed because they were normal to me, I am wondering.

Certainly online questionnaires that someone on another thread linked to suggested I might be, but I'm not going to claim a diagnosis I don't have.

As for trying to get myself assessed, I have my hands full trying to work pretty much full time and try and sort things out for DS, who isn't attending school anything close to even proper part time, with various agencies now involved and just trying to keep him on an even keel emotionally so that nobody gets hurt. He currently won't go to bed until gone midnight at the moment because one thing he was attending that was really helping him ended and he's been struggling ever since, which makes transitions and emotional regulation worse. And trying to get help for DS all involves things I hate, like interacting with people I don't know and badgering people, and phoning people, so I put on my work mask to do it but then I'm too polite and nice. It's all a nightmare.

Those saying neurodivergent people would've had an easier time in the past are looking through rose-tinted glasses - thinking of neurodivergent women in particular here. Centuries ago we'd have been burned or thrown into rivers as witches. Decades ago we'd have been hidden away in institutions, doped up enough to stop us bothering anybody if we were middle class. Working class women would've lived desperately, probably getting beaten for their poor executive functioning and drinking copious amounts of gin to cope.

@ShannonMcFarland copious amounts of gin is still a thing. Cheers 😁
