Do you think you're neurotypical?

Quick search didn't show this had been asked before which surprised me.

A lot of neurodivergent (ND) stuff on social media these days. Got me thinking I am definitely ND maybe ADHD. I always think "surely everyone is like that though???" I struggle to comprehend how anyone could think of do things differently to me.

So Mumsnet - do you think you are neurotypical or neurodiverse?

Yabu - neurotypical

Yanbu - neurodiverse

Think I'm definitely ND. My DP went through an autism diagnosis a few years ago and when looking at the questions they had to answer I scored even more highly than them, albeit in very different ways.

SquigglePigs · 11/04/2023 21:12

I'm ND. I got an autism diagnosis a few weeks ago. If you'd asked me last year though I'd have said I was NT - a bit quirky maybe but NT.

Botw1 · 11/04/2023 21:12

Definitely neurotypical

I understand the reasons why others think differently to me but, no, I won't ever really understand lack of executive function

Freshstarts22 · 11/04/2023 21:13

I think I’ve realised as I’ve got older, more knowledgeable and been through the process with my child I’m probably ND.

Hardbackwriter · 11/04/2023 21:13

I think I'm neurotypical. I do have traits that are vaguely like some ADHD symptoms, but I also have many other ways in which I don't match the profile at all and - most importantly - none of it is at a level where it significantly affects my ability to function. I try and be a good ally and I think one of the most important ways as a neurotypical person to do that is to acknowledge that while you of course have your own struggles and difficulties it's minimizing and dismissive to not acknowledge how much easier it is to be neurotypical in a society designed for the neurotypical.

JustForOnce · 11/04/2023 21:14

Neurotypical. Definitely. We aren’t all ‘a bit autistic’ etc.

MMMarmite · 11/04/2023 21:14

Neurodiverse, probably due to childhood trauma

ThirstyMeeples · 11/04/2023 21:16

Definitely neurotypical. I've always been organised and school suited me,both academically and socially. I read some threads on here of people trying to navigate situations that I know I'd find fairly easy. Hope that doesn't sound boastful as I don't mean it like that; just that the world is geared up for the NT so we don't experience the same challenges.

HeadNorth · 11/04/2023 21:16

Nobody is neurotypical- we are all individuals with our own strengths and weaknesses.

Autism can be a serious and life limiting condition that bears no relation to the so called neurodiverse behaviours reported on Mumsnet. We are all diverse.

Newnamefor2021 · 11/04/2023 21:17

I think I'm ND. I have children with diagnoses and it made me realise how I fit into the ADHD criteria. I've not sought diagnosis though.

youshouldnthaveasked · 11/04/2023 21:18

ND definitely. Would like to pursue autism assessment for myself

FatGirlSwim · 11/04/2023 21:20

ND - diagnosed autistic and ADHD.

I think neurodivergence is far more common than is realised.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 11/04/2023 21:20

ND. Straight A student in school, struggled with jobs, relationships, money, organisation & other life skills pretty much all my life.

It's took me the long and hard way and some awful lessons to finally remotely get my shit together by my late 30s, be more accepting of myself and make improvements in general life organisation. I'm still earning a pitiful wage though so that's the next mountain to climb.

So, this is a really good example of the kind of dismissive and minimizing thing that I wish other neurotypical people wouldn't do.

Switchwitch · 11/04/2023 21:21

I have a dc with suspected ADHD currently waiting for an assessment and I think I probably have it too. But I probably won't pursue a diagnosis for me because half of me thinks maybe my scattiness is just cognitive overload as I have so much on all the time, and I'd also worry meds would mean I couldn't do my job well.

happywatermelon · 11/04/2023 21:21

Neurotypical, I think… I definitely have a few ADHD traits but still probably in normal range!

Blanketenvy · 11/04/2023 21:22

I'd say neurodiverse but only recently coming round to the idea and currently waiting for an assessment. I've always felt (and been) a bit 'different' and struggled in some quiet specific ways that have affected me a lot, but I grew up with a sibling who has severe autism and learning disabilities (now a middle aged adult) so whilst I've always been a good ally, because I was very different to them in lots of ways I didn't really identify it in myself, so it's a strange thing really. I'm open to not being 'right' about probably being neurodiverse now but think I'll benefit from a conversation with someone totally independent to me about it although feel horribly overwhelmed by the idea.

TrueScrumptious · 11/04/2023 21:22

I’m pretty sure I’m neurodiverse. I’m mid-50s and I’ve always found life very, very difficult. I’ve done a few surveys recently, and I score highly. It never occurred to me until recently.

cadburyegg · 11/04/2023 21:22

I'm neurotypical

I really wish I could understand neurodiversity more, how to communicate best with my ND friends etc

Spendonsend · 11/04/2023 21:23

I think i am nuerotypical because there is nothing about me that would limit or impair daily function. I manage well enough.

I'm not mad keen on busy, noisy places so I wouldnt pick to work in a bar or go to a crowded concert but this is manageable as an adult.

JamSandle · 11/04/2023 21:23

Yanbu

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/04/2023 21:24

Definitely neurotypical. Have never even questioned it. Yes, there are some things I struggle with and some things I find difficult and sometimes I’m anxious or awkward. That’s normal for everyone.

Botw1 · 11/04/2023 21:24

Nt people can struggle with things without being nd.

You can dislike something without being nd

I know why people self diagnose but im not sure its always helpful.

Punxsutawney · 11/04/2023 21:25

I have an autism diagnosis, so ND. It was very important for me to go through the detailed assessment process that led to my diagnosis. For me I would not have felt comfortable calling myself ND or autistic without the formal diagnosis that I have been given.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 11/04/2023 21:25

My kids are autistic and so is my partner and I'm definitely adhd .
But it doesn't cause me issues in general so it's just the way I am
