In my local Co op just now, reached for a pack of mcvities chocolate digestives only to promptly put it back when I saw the price, £3.25???!! Aibu to think this is completely bonkers? I know price of everything has gone up but I don't think I've ever paid more than £1.50 for a pack of these biscuits, this is taking the piss. Also why is Co op so much more expensive than other supermarkets for everything ? It's the only supermarket in my small town so I am stuck with it but it's crazy for pricing.

I just dont bother with brand names now, the prices are ridiculous. I go for supermarkets own brand whenever possible

Ilikewinter · 11/04/2023 16:23

Oh wow!! I swear the price of Mr Kiplings cakes also go up every week, I think I saw them at nearly £3 a pack in Tesco's this weekend. Who still buys these products 🤣

ImDuranDuran · 11/04/2023 16:23

I think that's why, Co-Op tend to plonk themselves in the middle of housing areas as opposed to massive branches on the outskirts that you actually drive to, so they know many will be dependent on them and will also use them to 'nip to the shops' when they can't be bothered travelling further afield.

Absolute piss-takers.

NillyNoMates · 11/04/2023 16:24

French Fancies were £3 in Asda last week. I couldn’t believe it.

ssd · 11/04/2023 16:24

Thats completely ridiculous

ImDuranDuran · 11/04/2023 16:24

I've just checked Tesco app and a 400g pack is £1.95 so yeah, the Co-Op are def taking the piss.

MadisonAvenue · 11/04/2023 16:25

Co op prices can be ridiculous.I’m feeling very anti-Co op at the moment as we had one move into our village a few years ago which has recently resulted in the closure of the other small shop which included the very busy post office.

Back to the subject of biscuits, my Dad asked me to get him a twin pack of McVitie’s Rich Tea from Tesco (big Tesco, not an express) and they were £3. I got him Tesco own brand at 60p a packet instead.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 11/04/2023 16:25

They are more expensive because they are the only supermarkets in small towns with all the attendant issues with more expensive suppliers and longer, more difficult delivery routes, more issues with staffing and staff retention, and usually long opening hours.

Big supermarkets do not set up in tiny villages for obvious reasons and so there is far less economy of scale.

You pay more if you want a freshly baked croissant at 7am in the arse end of the backroads of the west coast of Cumbria than if you want the same thing in central Manchester. For example.

BQ91 · 11/04/2023 16:26

What a joke but sadly doesn’t surprise me. I also live close to co op and some of their prices are just ridiculous.

midgemadgemodge · 11/04/2023 16:26

Or you could say that coop goes where other stores won't because they can't make enough money - the coop decided to go there but charge more

Frabbits · 11/04/2023 16:26

"It's the only supermarket in my small town so I am stuck with it but it's crazy for pricing"

Well this is just basic economics, isn't it.

If you are the only supplier of something within a given distance then you can charge more than if there was competition.

Your choice as a consumer is whether you want to pay for the convenience of getting your biscuits from your local shop or if you want to pay for fuel and spend more time travelling to a bigger supermarket to get the item cheaper.

SnowfallSnowball · 11/04/2023 16:27

That’s insane! How is that even justified?! Not biscuit related but I was shocked when I saw a standard sized deodorant in boots was £6! Madness!

thaisweetchill · 11/04/2023 16:27

I paid £1.50 for a pack in B&M today. I won't go to a Co op the prices are extortionate

Dixiechickonhols · 11/04/2023 16:28

Ridiculous I wouldn’t pay it. The Tesco own brand (pricematched to Aldi - under £1) rated higher when I did blind taste testing with the Guides.
Co op are great for yellow sticker reductions though in the evening.

If I asked somebody to get me something specific and they got me own brand I'd be pissed off 😂 £1.50 per pack isn't bad at all?

gettingoldisshit · 11/04/2023 16:33

Co op is not the only supermarket in my town, there is also a waitrose, tesco and aldi within walking distance of each other. However they are definitely the most expensive and I would rather go without than pay their prices.

The yellow stickers are the only reasons n I go to my tiny local Co- op. I might buy milk there too. £3 for 6 apples makes it impossible to buy snacks etc.

InFiveMins · 11/04/2023 16:37

The co-op is my closest store and the prices are ridiculous, I do my best not to shop there and only ever go in if I have no other choice.

Cheesedoffandgrumpy · 11/04/2023 16:37

What is nuts is that we expect to get food and pay next to nothing for it. Where did all the ingredients come from, who made, who packed it, who delivered it, who is ringing it up?
All these things have a cost.

And what is even more nuts is when you realise processed food generates huge profits from basic ingredients, which are heavily subsidised by taxpayers, and cheap labour at minimun wage, heavily subsidised by the tax paeyer in the form of in work benefits, and then when eaten creates a popluation of people who get metabolically ill, who need medications and health care, again funded by tax payers. If you are lucky that is. You might live in country that does not have health care.

liveforsummer · 11/04/2023 16:42

On the giver hand Co op do a very nice fair trade Sauvignon blanc for £5.25 so not all bad.... 😆

Soproudoflionesses · 11/04/2023 16:54

I paid nearly £2 for a packet of choc digestives last week op and they were so thin - mcvities as well!! Have switched back to Lidl own! Still thin but less than half the price!

Poppyblush · 11/04/2023 16:55

£3.90 for BBQ sauce that was always £2 max!!!

Bichette · 11/04/2023 16:58

I have just seen a tube of Colgate toothpaste for £5 in our Tesco superstore. £5 !! FFS
And my box hair dye used to be 2 for £9 now it's 2 for £11.

QuintanaRoo · 11/04/2023 17:00

Someone on my village fb group raves on about the Coop being the biggest cause of rural poverty. I’m beginning to think he may have a point. He regularly posts price comparisons, Nescafé price difference is terrible even before cost of living crisis.

Trixibella · 11/04/2023 17:00

i get weekly deliveries rather than have coop mug me off.
