In my local Co op just now, reached for a pack of mcvities chocolate digestives only to promptly put it back when I saw the price, £3.25???!! Aibu to think this is completely bonkers? I know price of everything has gone up but I don't think I've ever paid more than £1.50 for a pack of these biscuits, this is taking the piss. Also why is Co op so much more expensive than other supermarkets for everything ? It's the only supermarket in my small town so I am stuck with it but it's crazy for pricing.

😮

I’ve just checked my Lidl app and a twin pack of McVitie’s chocolate digestive was £2.65, for 2 x 266g. I’m currently enjoying a few with my afternoon coffee.

Ostryga · 11/04/2023 17:02

Co-op can suck it. Thankfully I live in a city centre so plenty of options but a can of beans was £2.15 in there the other day. Beans!

I do like their cheapy own brand Sauvignon though which is £5 something still.

Belledan1 · 11/04/2023 17:03

I picked up the wrong size wafer thin ham thinking it was 1.99. Got home and its 4.29. Is a big family pack but don't taste that great. Lidl too. Sometimes prices confusing in there. 4 29! Yes I saw named biscuits are expensive now.

Teapleasebobb · 11/04/2023 17:12

I've stopped buying branded items. The price difference between branded and own brand is too big to justify the expense!

Sgtmajormummy · 11/04/2023 17:12

I hope you’re talking about a double pack, OP.
Otherwise they really are talking the P…
In Iceland a double pack is £2.65.

ssd · 11/04/2023 17:16

2 quid a pack in waitrose

SilverGlitterBaubles · 11/04/2023 17:24

The Co Op prices are ridiculous, I try to avoid them except in an emergency it is tough though as they tend to dominate town centres I feel like they hold people who cannot travel to ransom.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 11/04/2023 17:26

Oh and I am pretty sure that DH said he saw chocolate hobnobs in Waitrose priced at £3.70.

I think that's why, Co-Op tend to plonk themselves in the middle of housing areas as opposed to massive branches on the outskirts that you actually drive to, so they know many will be dependent on them and will also use them to 'nip to the shops' when they can't be bothered travelling further afield.

Absolute piss-takers.

That is so true! Well I am going to make a concerted effort from now on to stock up on Tesco/Asda stuff whenever I'm in the big towns which is once a month or so, I used to find it handy to nip to co op nearly every day and buy what I need but I see that I'm going to have to stay bulk buying and storing it. There's no excuse for these kinds of prices cos I know other shops aren't charging that.

Someone on my village fb group raves on about the Coop being the biggest cause of rural poverty. I’m beginning to think he may have a point. He regularly posts price comparisons, Nescafé price difference is terrible even before cost of living crisis.

Where I work there are a couple of villages where the co-op is the only shop. The villages are ex-pit and have the resultant generational poverty. Often completely over a barrel, can't really afford co-op prices, but neither can they afford to get to the nearest town (or rely on a poor bus service).

I've just checked Tesco app and a 400g pack is £1.95 so yeah, the Co-Op are def taking the piss.

Yep exactly that, it's just blatantly ripping off people, mind you I doubt anyone is gonna buy at those prices.

The biscuits arent even nice anymore, its barely even a digestive, let alone a chocolate one.

Co op prices can be ridiculous.I’m feeling very anti-Co op at the moment as we had one move into our village a few years ago which has recently resulted in the closure of the other small shop which included the very busy post office.

Back to the subject of biscuits, my Dad asked me to get him a twin pack of McVitie’s Rich Tea from Tesco (big Tesco, not an express) and they were £3. I got him Tesco own brand at 60p a packet instead.

I'm seriously going to have to re think my food shopping, I'm used to everything increasing in price but this feels like they are exploiting it.

There are other foodshops in the town but they are all Spar or Eurospar, so charge convenience stores prices but actually I have noticed loads of products are cheaper in these convenience stores than in the co op!

I’m in Ireland and just got some petrol
didn’t need juice but was reaching for a bottle of water and a standard carton of prune Juice was 6.50

yipitsmesunshine · 11/04/2023 17:44

I used to work there, they give there staff 30% off own brand and even with that it's still more expensive than other places lol

Grapewrath · 11/04/2023 17:55

I popped in there the other day and went to grab a large pack of crisps to share- they were 3.25?!
I used to pop in there a lot but now I very rarely do and usually only in an emergency when everything else is shut

RosaBaby2 · 11/04/2023 18:01

I wanted a bag of mini marshmallows the other day, they were almost £3 in the coop! They're about 85p in Aldi.

StylishM · 11/04/2023 18:09

The wheat export issue with Russia is going to cause higher price hikes, biscuits, bread and simple flour products are going to jump in prices. The Turkish agreement for them to export grain expires soon, and as the government are defunding British farmers, we're more and more reliant on wheat imports which leaves us open to these sorts of price hikes

blanketsforall · 11/04/2023 18:13

The big size was £3 in sainsburys the other week - I got their own brand which was 85p and family don't complain... in local sainsburys though a box of fondant fancies was £3.75!
