In my local Co op just now, reached for a pack of mcvities chocolate digestives only to promptly put it back when I saw the price, £3.25???!! Aibu to think this is completely bonkers? I know price of everything has gone up but I don't think I've ever paid more than £1.50 for a pack of these biscuits, this is taking the piss. Also why is Co op so much more expensive than other supermarkets for everything ? It's the only supermarket in my small town so I am stuck with it but it's crazy for pricing.

I don't buy or eat most of the products people are complaining about - Co-op or elsewhere.
However, in my village their f&v and meat are good quality & not that much dearer than the big stores. Their yellow-sticker items are usually at least 50% off, so well worth looking for.

bamboonights · 11/04/2023 18:14

The Coop near me does the best bread. Also great wines at reasonable prices but that is extortionate for a packet of biscuits.

Phphion · 11/04/2023 18:23

Currently, a 433g pack of McVities milk chocolate digestives is £2 in our local Co-Op, while the smaller 266g pack is £2.45.

French Fancies were £3 in Asda last week. I couldn’t believe it.

Yep, Morrisons too!

blanketsforall · 11/04/2023 18:26

And they are only one bite a cake Confused I tend to bake now as with 6 in the house, things don't last long!

orangeflags · 11/04/2023 18:26

My husband is obsessed by the price of McVities digestives. They are the only biscuit he eats, so we get through a lot of them. There was a massive price hike about 6 weeks ago, the twin packs went from £2 a pack to £3 a twin pack and they also cut down the size of the packs too. The price increase was across the board. We had to switch to a Lidl biscuit until he calmed down

Boogismyname · 11/04/2023 18:27

Yes the Co-op is obscenely expensive.
£6 for deodorant???? That's fucking mental.
Over £3 for biscuits is also stupid.

LondonLovie · 11/04/2023 18:29

Tbh I didn't believe you! But I've checked on Ocardo and Sainsbury and, yep, it's £3 for a pack of McV's.

Bloody hell!

Heyhoitsme · 11/04/2023 18:35

My Co-op had a great offer on Yorkshire tea bags! On the other hand an independent shop charged me £2.35 for an iceberg lettuce.

Coop is absolutely ridiculous for their pricing. Unfortunately it is the only medium sized supermarket in our village so can't always avoid shopping there. i went in at the weekend and they were asking £8.50 for 240 PG tips T- bags ( £4.79 at Lidl ) and £3.30 for 12 medium eggs ( £1.79 at Lidl ). Not only the prices but they are just so crap in so many other ways - never any staff, back checkouts rarely staffed despite the carpark being at the back of the store etc. One of the few things that are good value are the five frozen items ( meal deal) for £6 but every time you go to buy it there is one of the items missing from the deal and such a faff to try to locate a staff member, negotiate a replacement option for missing item , then wait half an hour whilst they faff around trying to get the till to accept the alternative. By this time it's really not worth the hassle !! The spend another ten minutes trying to get your coop loyalty card to be accepted, standing there trying to get it to register whilst checkout assistant looks on ! The place is enough to sent me into a rage every time ! It's only saving grace is that they accept recyclable scrunchy plastic. Otherwise I would try not to step foot in the place ever again . Rant over !!

But COOP is a convenience store really, isn’t it? Not a supermarket. They’re often in places where no supermarket would ever open a branch as they’d never make enough money. So it’s fair enough they charge more I think. What’s worse, in my opinion, is Tesco who charge more in Express stores than in supermarkets for the same products, despite having all the benefits of scale in buying, logistics and overheads!

No I think the Co op would class itself as small supermarket. Yes to PP re the other issues with staff, stock and things missing from meal deals, it's just pretty crap all round but the crazy prices like what you mentioned there for tea bags honestly it's like they're trolling us.

On a separate point why the hell are we defunding the production of our own wheat just so we can pay extortionate prices for bread and biscuits??

I can't afford ethical groceries then, I wish I could but I can't.

A can of Dover deodorant was 4.50 at tesco I couldn't believe it. The shelves were full to say the least.

Caspianberg · 11/04/2023 19:24

Online shop must work out cheaper tbh. Either free delivery or very cheap for most. Even if only once a month to stock up on essentials

Lilifer · 11/04/2023 19:29

@roundcork oh no it's fine I didn't take it as a dig at all, but just that while I would like to support ethical products normally, these days it's just not possible when everything has gotten so pricey 😞

My Waitrose delivery is cheaper than the Co op.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 11/04/2023 19:39

And my local co op nicked my eBay Parcel. It was a Karen millen dress I’d wanted for years. Fuckers.

warmmfeet · 11/04/2023 19:52

I was shocked a packet of my husband's fave cereal has gone up to £4.10! Gone in 4 bowls with his portion sizes. Jordan's nutty crunch or something. Had to put him on fruit and fibre. A bigger box for £1.25 in Lidl.

slowquickstep · 11/04/2023 20:02

CO-OP is so expensive and McVities are bastards for moving production to Turkey. I will never buy McVities again.

Admittedly this is old, but it’s on their website:

https://colleaguestories.coop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/store-segments-2017-summary-poster-final.pdf

They classify 97% of their stores as convenience.

ifyougochasingrabbits · 11/04/2023 20:46

it just goes to show …yet another example of supermarkets etc ripping off and taking the absolute living piss simply because they can. They know people will still buy stuff and I guarantee their profits are bigger than ever

Cost of living crisis ?? Cost of companies greed crisis more like

QuintanaRoo · 11/04/2023 21:54

As prices shoot up I look for alternatives, so cheaper own brand stuff. Aldi marmite for example is nicer than marmite. I’d ever go back even if the same price.
