To not expect to pay excessive amount as we're family.

In laws brought themselves a caravan on a haven site a year ago. Decided to spend some pension money on it.
the site fees have renewed and have gone up just like everything else in life.
They don't rent it out and we only use it as family.
Anyway father in law has just charged his own son £75 for 3 nights to use it. He owed me money for ordering him a new tablet and doing him a favour so took the money out of that which I couldn't afford to lose.

Before the season started he mentioned charging £25 a day but nothing else happened and no mention of it again before we went.

He's also charged brother in law £150 to use but they paid upfront.

Am i being unreasonable to feel this is a lot to charge your own children and £10 or so a day would be sufficient. I'm not convinced I spend £25 a day heating and lighting my 3 bed home. They get their passes included with the caravan for 10 people.

Husband won't challenge it because it won't make any difference.

OP posts:

I would not say £25 pn was excessive.

And its bought

Miajk · 11/04/2023 14:32

maddy68 · 11/04/2023 14:29

They are paying the site fees electric etc so 25 a night is fuck all

They'd be paying it anyway so what's the difference to them?

They're not covering costs their just trying to profit. People on here are weird. Why would you charge your relative 25 a night just to make money off them!

Albiboba · 11/04/2023 14:32

Before the season started he mentioned charging £25 a day but nothing else happened and no mention of it again before we went

So he told you he was going to start charging, you planned to stay there anyway and see annoyed that he charged exactly what he said he was going to?
£75 for 3 nights sounds like a pretty good family rate.

FlowersareEverything · 11/04/2023 14:32

You really don’t know how lucky you are, that’s incredibly cheap. Site fees are a fortune on Haven sites and your family will also need to factor in maintenance and wear and tear.

Summerslimtime · 11/04/2023 14:32

It's really mean imo. But it depends how much money they have generally. My mum would never charge me, and we'd probably help out by doing some extra cleaning or maintenance.

I wouldn't complain, and if they are well off, then I wouldn't go again. If I was comfortably off I wouldn't charge my own dc either.

Meandfour · 11/04/2023 14:33

I’m confused; your title says excessive yet your post says £75 for 3 nights in a caravan.

Which is it?? If you couldn’t afford £75 for 3 nights break you shouldn’t have gone. YABVU.

Gas and electric are not free!

ginislife · 11/04/2023 14:34

My friend has a caravan on a Haven site and I know she charges £600 a week because one owned by Haven is £1000 per week.

IncompleteSenten · 11/04/2023 14:34

If you don't want to pay that you don't have to.
Just don't go there.
Book a different holiday.

Tina221 · 11/04/2023 14:35

£25 per night is an absolute bargain. They have site fees, bills to pay etc

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/04/2023 14:35

Honestly £75 for three nights is nothing. He is giving you a family rate but charging a nominal amount so you will only request it for modest amounts of time (fair enough).

ofCourseYouHave · 11/04/2023 14:36

I'd never charge family. I wouldn't expect my parents to charge me either.

Riverlee · 11/04/2023 14:36

Thats a bargain! Basically it’s a contribution towards the site fees (which are huge). I appreciate he’d have to pay these even if you weren’t going, buts it’s still a small amount.

If you don’t want to pay, rent another caravan on the site and pay ten times that.

OhmygodDont · 11/04/2023 14:37

I think that’s fair.

Static sites gas and electric can actually be much higher than at home since the site is charged it at business rates then they sell it on.

Also people don’t tend to scrimp on heating usage when away. We have known a family to get though a whole 60kg! Gas bottle in a long weekend as they weren’t paying so didn’t care.

Then there is ware on the caravan as in the carpets etc as if they where not letting other people use it those would stay much nicer for longer.

Presumably you possibly had access to owners passes? Depending on how many they were given. Again that gives discounts or the fact you didn’t need to purchase them to use the pool/club house.

I’ll also hazard a guess they didn’t exactly buy a bronze caravan for personal use and it’s like a higher end 3bed with decking and depending on location could have one of the better views. Cost up what their caravan would cost you via haven then see who’s the greedy one. It won’t be them.

OP bought FIL an ipad, expecting to be paid back- and the cost of this was deducted from the caravan hire charged. IDK how much an ipad is these days, a few hundred possibly?

Spiderboy · 11/04/2023 14:38

IamKlaus · 11/04/2023 14:25

BOUGHT.

Seems pretty shitty to me, but families are weird. Apparently it's ok to profit off your own children for a crappy caravan that you'd be paying for either way.

Site fees will be at least 2k a year, where will they be profiting?? Water, gas and electric, maintenance

Silverbook · 11/04/2023 14:38

I don't see your issue.
He told you it was £25 a day then "didn't mention it again".....how often did you want reminding or were you hoping he's forget. £25 a night is very reasonable.

OhmygodDont · 11/04/2023 14:39

Bet they don’t really want to let people use it either another good reason for charging. People don’t tend to respect stuff that’s free either.

Flamingogirl08 · 11/04/2023 14:39

God I have just booked 3 nights in Haven for May half term. It cost me £700 so id gladly pay £75 🤣

Chessetchelsea · 11/04/2023 14:39

Sure it’s cheap but it’s family. I wouldn’t dream of charging family! So tight! And to deduct it from a separate transaction with you isn’t fair. Just don’t go again and don’t do favours for FIL in future.

MorrisZapp · 11/04/2023 14:39

As an aside, a friend of mine's parents have a static caravan and they only allow blood relatives to stay in it overnight. No in laws, boyfriends or partners.

They don't want anyone 'bonking' in it, apparently 🤢

ODFOx · 11/04/2023 14:40

Is that £25 per person per night, or for the whole caravan?
If the latter then it's a token payment which won't really dent the site fees and bills. An absolute bargain really.

BungleandGeorge · 11/04/2023 14:41

I suspect the fuel used in a caravan for heating and cooking is pretty costly. They use bottles gas don’t they and have no insulation!

OhmygodDont · 11/04/2023 14:41

I’ve just done £400 in the arse end of November too for three nights 😂

Allschoolsareartschools · 11/04/2023 14:42

YABU but I do remember being shocked when my inlaws charged us a very modest rate for using their caravan.
Looking back I'm very glad I never said anything!
