Unisex public toilets

I don’t really understand why these are becoming popular.

I don’t have any issues with members of the LGBTQ community using whichever toilet they feel comfortable in but I generally don’t want to use a toilet that a bunch of men have pissed all over the loo seat, toilet, floor etc.

I went out for the day at the weekend and have walked out of multiple toilets that were so foul I wouldn’t use them. Some has loo seats showered with urine, others had such soggy floors that I thought the bottoms of my trousers would be one soaked in urine if I used them. I also pushed open the (unlocked) cubicle in one toilet to find a man sat on the loo… revolting and, I’d imagine, quite frightening if I’d been a young girl trying to use the toilet.

My children love eating in Five Guys bad ask to go each school holiday as a treat. I’ve told them I’m never going again because of the unisex toilets.

I don’t mind on principle - it’s the splashy boys/men who are enough to put anyone off, though. I wish parents of young boys would check after they’ve used the loo and clean up after them!

Where I used to work, although it wasn’t a public loo, we did let sometimes let young children use our staff loo - but soon learned to ask parents of boys to make sure it was left clean.

So glad we have a polling option on threads like this. So, as it stands, 90% of mnetters are put off by unisex toilets. That 10% is doing some heavy lifting in posting messages though.

Of course, like this thread, people will quietly withdraw from going to places that won't provide single sex facilities while the over-represented extol their virtues and these places will be left scratching their heads about why their customers have gone elsewhere.

Lovely Country Park near me has refurbished the cafe and the previously M or F loos are now a smaller Unisex.

A couple of weekends ago there was a small queue (large park, 4 cubicles - there were 4 in the Ladies alone previously) me and 4 men, not really a problem. But the place really did smell like the Gents and yes, the seat and the floor were wet and I didn’t appreciate needing to clean a random bloke’s piss off the seat before I could use the loo. While I was washing and drying my hands 3 men came out of cubicles and walked straight out, didn’t even glance at the sinks …

TAmum3 · 11/04/2023 09:14

Re-read the OPs post - the only issue raised was that unisex toilets are ‘dirty’. I’ve never been on a plane and used the toilet after a man and had to clean wee up before I can use it!
The safety aspect was brought up later by other PP.

Yes. Get over it.

Yep, suck it up ladies, men want this so it’s unreasonable to object. Just sit in their piss, take on the extra danger and discomfort and smile in the knowledge of how inclusive you are. 🙄

jeaux90 · 11/04/2023 09:27

I hate mixed sex toilets.

I won't use them unless it's an absolute necessity.

They are usually gross especially the ones with urinals in that you find in some places, I don't want to walk passed a man's penis.

It's unsafe and undignified.

EasterBreak · 11/04/2023 09:42

I'm not bothered by unisex toilets I've seen womans toilets in hideous states which I like to assume is sometimes from children and not grown woman. Piss everywhere. Then there are toilets with period blood smeared. Disgusting. Can't see how mens toilets can be much worse.

Well probably because they have men in them. Would you be happy to send a 13 year old girl into the toilets alone if there were 3 grown men, a bit pissed up in there? I don’t want to share loos with men, I don’t want the extra risk of assault thank you.

Not really thought of that but me myself as a grown woman have no problem sharing the space with a grown man. I went to the museum in Oxford the other day actually and the toilets were unisex. Very clean too. Had no issue.

CampervanKween · 11/04/2023 09:49

I don't mind single enclosed ones off the main room. But I hate those ones where they're in a separate mixed sex room and cubicles off that. There was just me and a wierd drunk guy in one recently at a bar and I felt really uncomfortable and didn't wait to wash my hands. He could have pushed me back into one of the cubicles and assaulted me and no-one would have been aware.

Great, do you care about those of us who are concerned about sharing these spaces with men? Or do you think we’re all silly?

Of course I care about others. I personally have no issue with it and that is just me stating my own personal opinion. It doesn't mean I'm correct the same as your opinion doesn't mean you.

EasterBreak · 11/04/2023 10:47

You are* that should have said

Naunet · 11/04/2023 09:55

So if I was bursting for a wee and the toilets infront of me said 'unisex' or 'female' I wouldn't care. That doesn't mean I'm horrible and wouldn't care if you were stood next to me worried outside a unisex toilet. I wouldn't demand there be unisex toilets or anything, I just personally do not mind. Hope that makes more sense.

LauraNicolaides · 11/04/2023 12:27

Yes, I have no problem with unisex toilets, and I always get the sense that those who do might have some other agenda.

(And by far the grimmest toilets I've ever been in have been women-only.)

nothingcomestonothing · 11/04/2023 12:31

My agenda is being as a safe as possible, preserving my privacy and dignity, and concern for the safety of other girls and women including those whose previous experiences or cultural or religious requirements mean they need single sex toilets or cannot use the toilet at all. HTH

WandaWonder · 11/04/2023 12:35

I find wee on the seats and floor, foot prints on toilet seats, unflushed toilets, toilet paper everywhere in women toilets

I don't remember the last clean female public toilet I have been in

That's nice dear but others of us women don't consent, are religious or are assault survivors and don't want males in enclosed spaces with us.

JustForOnce · 11/04/2023 12:43

I thought I would be ok with it. Turns out I am not. I have no trauma and am fine with men.

But I have discovered that I hate being in a small room with two or three unisex cubicles with men waiting with me. The cleanliness is definitely an issue. I have started to feel angry about this.

No regard for the man you walked in on?

He could have locked the cubicle door but hadn’t!

You say in some comments how disgusting women’s toilets are with wee all over the seats and floor, but when you mention unisex toilets with wee on the floor and seats it’s always men who get the blame. Why is that?

Nowvoyager99 · 26/06/2023 16:22

Do you never travel by train?

I can’t say I ever notice whether a cafe has just one loo or separate.

PeteSahut · 26/06/2023 16:27

I hate the idea of unisex toilets btw

That's nice for you, but some people very much do notice and for them it very much does matter.

I wouldn't wander into a pub full of football supporters watching a match on Sky and announce that I really don't care who wins, and it's only a game so what does it matter.

I know this is an old thread, but train toilets are grim. I only use them if I’m desperate.

I really hate disgusting toilets. Although, it’s not always the fault of the men. I’ve used some public toilets before and been horrified at the state of the cubicle after a woman has walked out.

Apparently some women hover, splatter everywhere and leave their own mess for the next woman. That’s just horrendous.
