Unisex public toilets

I don’t really understand why these are becoming popular.

I don’t have any issues with members of the LGBTQ community using whichever toilet they feel comfortable in but I generally don’t want to use a toilet that a bunch of men have pissed all over the loo seat, toilet, floor etc.

I went out for the day at the weekend and have walked out of multiple toilets that were so foul I wouldn’t use them. Some has loo seats showered with urine, others had such soggy floors that I thought the bottoms of my trousers would be one soaked in urine if I used them. I also pushed open the (unlocked) cubicle in one toilet to find a man sat on the loo… revolting and, I’d imagine, quite frightening if I’d been a young girl trying to use the toilet.

My children love eating in Five Guys bad ask to go each school holiday as a treat. I’ve told them I’m never going again because of the unisex toilets.

Never had a problem with any unisex toilets! Ever

Me neither.

All the unisex toilets I’ve been in have been clean. So the ick is a facility issue not a unisex issue. Don’t make this into something it’s not.

Lucinda7 · 10/04/2023 22:44

I used a unisex toilet abroad on holiday. There was a stern middle aged lady attendant so I felt safe. Sorry for the stereotype but that's how it was. Most of our toilets are unattended. I agree that seems unsafe for children.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/04/2023 22:46

I hate them. But to be honest I hate them more in places I'd regularly go as opposed to a random unisex toilet say in a hotel or restaurant. One of my work locations has recently put in a unisex toilet area and I can't use it. Whatever about strangers I just feel so uncomfortable going to the toilet in a cubicle next to a man I work with or have just had a business meeting with!

Safety is always a priority but privacy & dignity come a close second for me. I think there should be third spaces for whoever doesn't mind sharing but I absolutely want a female only space to relieve myself etc in.

Babdoc · 10/04/2023 22:50

Unisex toilets
a) have more sexual assaults than single sex toilets and
b) are at risk of men planting micro cameras that live stream to the internet. Toilet porn is a thriving category, particularly popular among Korean men.
It is hard to spot the cameras, which can even be concealed inside the toilet rim. They only cost about £20 online.
So if you fancy being watched urinating or changing your tampon, by online porn fetishists, go ahead and use unisex loos.
But I avoid them completely.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 10/04/2023 22:54

Most men don't piss all over the seat and floor. As long as they are top to bottom doors then not a problem. If you find them dirty then you report the issue to a member of staff. I find one cubicle for women and one for men much more annoying, as the gents is usually empty whereas women usually have to queue.

TAmum3 · 10/04/2023 22:55

What do you do on an aeroplane/ train when you’re travelling for hours and they’re all unisex? I personally rather single sex toilets but when there’s no other option, it is what it is…

Phoebo · 10/04/2023 22:56

I hate them so much, they usually have piss everywhere and stink. I'm not surprised they're popular, I'd say it makes it easier for the companies that have them. Definitely notice them more and more in eating establishments. I think with the outrage with trans sharing women's toilets, they'll just become unisex to make it a moot point

mrsfollowill · 10/04/2023 22:56

I hate them- there is a venue local to me where there is a group of 'artisan' food outlets and a few bars. There are 8 unisex toilets- all floor to ceiling doors - each has a sanitary bin and the handwashing area is in the middle- open plan.
I stand in the queue- long snaking line of men and women. All cubicles occupied. Drunk man behind me banging on about how desperate he is for a slash oh and maybe I should smile more?! - a door opens as a another drunk man staggers out announcing 'I'd leave it a bit before going in there!' (I'm not at the front of the line thank god)
I finally get to the front- guy walks out and I walk in - piss everywhere- all over the floor/sanitary bin/toilet. He must have gone in there and sprayed the whole cubicle.
I walked straight out and tried again- luckily got in as the poor cleaner had been in. I still go there- but nip into one of the many other pubs around and use their ladies. Sure in a ladies loo you get the odd horrible mess - but then you can normally use another stall.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/04/2023 22:57

Yes Nando’s, lovely toilets with doors and sinks inside, yet piss and toilet paper over the floor. Completely and utterly minging!

Phoebo · 10/04/2023 22:58

I don't understand how they are unsafe, the ones I've seen are all in their own cubicles with a sink. Or sometimes the sink is outside. That's a stretch to say they're unsafe if anything they are more safe than having a bunch of cubicles in its own room

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2023 22:58

I’ve never understood the fuss. As long as there’s a cubicle with a lockable door I’m fine with them.

HighInfidelity · 10/04/2023 22:58

The only unisex toilets I’ve encountered when I’ve been at places like restaurants have been a fully enclosed space with toilet and sink behind your own locked door, so no shared space, and these have always been very clean. I’ve been using unisex toilets that are cubicles with a shared sink area in gay bars and clubs for a long time and find them to be just as clean (or not) as any other nightclub toilets.

I think this is also another reason they are starting to make them this way

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/04/2023 22:59

It's not comparable to being on a plane or train. There's just one cubicle then and you have to wait your turn but once in you're alone. The cleanliness issue is still there but safety, privacy & dignity are not at stake.

MrsMikeDrop · 10/04/2023 23:00

YABU, the issue is the mess not the unisex aspect. I don't like them because of the mess

What toilets are you using where they're not separate and when you're in there you're not alone?? Hmm

Veryverycalmnow · 10/04/2023 23:01

Absolutely hate pissy floor and toilet seat.

SunnieShine · 10/04/2023 23:02

WifeMotherWorker · 10/04/2023 21:34

I agree with you. All the women I know want safe single spaces like toilets.

I certainly do. Hate mixed-sex toilets.

nothingcomestonothing · 10/04/2023 23:03

I don't think you can have both of these. If everyone can use 'whichever toilet they feel comfortable in' (ignoring that that might make others less comfortable, or safe, or even able to use any toilet at all), then some of those people will be men who might piss all over.

AbsoluteYawns · 10/04/2023 23:03

Lovetotravel123 · 10/04/2023 20:38

Totally agree with you. I just want to sit down on a clean, dry, loo seat.

This, this, one million times this!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/04/2023 23:04

They aren’t popular OP, just widespread. We aren’t allowed to say why, but it’s not because women were clamouring to share toilets with men.

in spite of all the advocates rushing to comment, I notice the voting is overwhelmingly in agreement with you.

As I said upthread, we have unisex toilets at work. Even though the cubicles are separate they are not soundproof! And I just hate the thought of being in a cubicle next to a male colleague or business associate. The communal area has mirrors and a counter but again I'd hate the idea of checking my makeup/hair etc while a male colleague is there too. I want single sex spaces. We needed them for a reason, what's changed that we now suddenly don't??

I don't have a problem with 'anyone' toilets provided they have a handbasin and bin in each locable cubicle. I prefer enclosed cubicles, so doors to the floors etc.
I have worked on construction sites and occasionally used male toilets. This was awkward when I had my period as there wasn't a sanpro bin.
No-one likes dirty toilets.

Doesn't bother me but then I worked somewhere with one shared toilet amongst ten people for years.

As long as each cubicle is fully enclosed and lockable, with a sanitary bin, sink and dryer then I couldn't care less whether a man or woman has been in there before me 🤷‍♀️
