Dogs in shops

I have been to an out of town designer outlet place today where it would appear they are dog friendly and dogs are allowed in the clothes and shoe shops. Surely a trip to the shops is not a place to take your dog? We were in a small clothes shop which is already a bit on the tight side, the three dogs in there did not make it any easier to get around. AIBU to think clothes shops should be dog free zones?

Also some dogs struggle being left at home alone. And really if you get a dog/s and never take it anywhere with you, what's the point of having him/her/them?

If a dog struggles with being left home alone then that's the owners problem, and not one they should be passing on to society in general by taking their dog with them to inappropriate places. And yes, I agree with your second point - I don't know why these people have dogs - they are inappropriate owners if their lifestyle means they can't spend time with them in places that welcome dogs.

vivainsomnia · 10/04/2023 20:06

Guide dogs belong everywhere. Pet dogs belong wherever they are allowed. As are pigs and horses
All those posts about unhygienic dogs make me laugh. I guess guide dogs never shed, never lick themselves, somehow clean their ass better, and amazingly, have the power to prevent allergic people from having asthma attacks, so they are, unlike their dirty, fleas ridden, drooling, asthma triggering friends called pets!

vivainsomnia · 10/04/2023 20:08

And for this assumption that dog owners exprct every places to welcome dogs, what a lot of nonsense.

If a place is dog friendly, I might take my dog, if it isn't, it's absolutely fair enough. I have options. I certainly don't expect all to be dog friendly and I don't think less of one if they are not.

Problem with people who don't like dogs is that they don't represent society.

I think 1 family out 3 own a dog. Many more don't have dogs but love them, many more just don't mind them. Those who dislike them are a minority.

It is only people like you who label these places in appropriate.

What makes a dog ok or not in a restaurant or shop is not their status as a dog but how they behave. I feel as outraged as you if I see an owner with a poorly behaved dog in such places. Barking, disturbing others, and oh god, weeing or worse, but it is frankly not my experience and I do find dogs in these places very well behaved, certainly more than kids. Only once can I recall a dog barking in a pub and the owner was rightly told off.

Cheshire oaks is now like this. I feel bad for the poor dogs!

ginsparkles · 10/04/2023 20:25

The I feel sorry for the dogs thing is interesting. My dog can't be worn out from exercise, I could walk her for hours and she'll still keep going. What wears her out is making her mind work. So for us some walks are rural, off lead running, some are in a secure paddock running with other dogs, others are the local park, and some are yes a day in town. She finds each of these as stimulating as the other, new sensations, new places, new smells, new sights. A trip into town is a great way to work on road work, lead work, heal work and getting used to busy places. I don't feel sorry for her at all, she loves it.

Many dog owners and many people who don't own dogs but love them and many who just don't mind them, STILL don't want to trip over them in the supermarket, listen to them bark in cafes or skid in a puddle of their piss in a clothes shop.

No kid I have ever known enjoys rolling in fox shit. Doesn't lick their own anus. Doesn't ram their nose in a dog's ass. Doesn't sniff the damp lamppost.

id rather fox shit and dog arse than a whining screaming child.

Picassa · 10/04/2023 20:44

I dont get the whole thing of bringing your dog everywhere. I swear people only do it so they don’t have time restrictions placed on them when they are out!

I would prefer neither. Is it compulsory to choose one.

LolaSmiles · 10/04/2023 20:47

I know other people with similar reactions to dogs and dander.

The idea that they should have to get clothes shops because some poor old person might prefer to take their dog clothes shopping and in the changing rooms seems like a bizarre set of priorities.

It used to be the case that pets were considered pets, and humans got on with human activities. Now it seems a certain type of dog owner expects to be able to take their dog all over the place.

whatsyourpoison12 · 10/04/2023 20:52

if this is down to hygiene, then it should be okay to refuse a person entry to an establishment if they stink, have unruly hair, and are generally a mess. ill say this again - the dogs I know who are taken into shops etc have impeccable hygiene, manners, and general courtesy. I cannot say the same for humans, especially in some of these designer outlets.

it is commonly accepted for a person to smell like BO, be loud and obnoxious, and run about. dogs behave better and present better than these humans

Judgyjudgy · 10/04/2023 20:54

ginforall · 10/04/2023 14:40

It made me wonder why shops allow it, I was curious if it was just me that found it odd, but apparently not.

I think in alot of places it's not "allowed", just that people do it and people are too afraid to say anything. And it only takes one person to see them to then bring their dog then it becomes a thing. People should actually feel ashamed to take their dogs shopping, it's animal cruelty.

Totally, it's just selfish owners

My dog is exhausted after a walk round town! He has to concentrate on walking nicely instead of tear arsing round the woods or whatever.
I've never been made to feel anything but welcome.
Sometimes the biggest problem is I want him to sit under the table but loads of people want to fuss him.

Dogs have impeccable manners and general courtesy? You do know these are human traits, and not applicable to dogs, yes!? As for hygiene. You're out of your mind. They literally eat poo. They lick their butts. And their genitals. Thwn they lick you.

I sense you perhaps don't like dogs. Sorry to break it to you, but we all have to put up with things we don't like. Do you stamp your feet and wail "it's not fair" every time you come across a dog somewhere you don't think it should be? You should maybe consider some counselling if you think dogs are so disgusting it ruins your day to see one.

Some things we have to tolerate. Other things we can work on changing. If I can help influence public opinion on dogs, great. Often people haven't given dog ownership much thought. They've glossed over the fact that dogs eat shit. If I can put people off getting a dog, brilliant.

I'm sure you're so influential you can dissuade the general public from dog ownership 😂
By the way, my dog doesn't eat shit, but even if he did he would still be worth 10 of you.

It just makes me want to take in more dogs and make our pack bigger. 😅

Agreed! I don't know where all these dog-hating nutters live, because when I am out with my dog we are often mobbed by people wanting to fuss him. I don't think I've had a negative experience. If I can see a child looks nervous when we are approaching, I make sure to keep him close. I do understand not everyone loves him. Someone mentioned dogs can't have manners, but mine knows to step out of the way to let people pass, and also to wait for people to approach him rather than pester for attention.

KarmaStar · 10/04/2023 21:56

Another dog bashing thread.
What about kids wiping dirty hands on clothes?humans trying clothes on then leaving them in a pile on the floor?shop lifters?violent customers?
leave dogs alone.🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐾🐾 🐾🐾 🐾🐾 🐾🐾 🐾🐾 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕

I think many people are indifferent or if they dislike dogs they don't make a fuss about it. They might share their views online though.

Some people wanting to fuss over my dogs wouldn't be enough for me to conclude everyone loves dogs and I should take my dogs everywhere.
