Dogs in shops

ginforall · 10/04/2023 14:23

I have been to an out of town designer outlet place today where it would appear they are dog friendly and dogs are allowed in the clothes and shoe shops. Surely a trip to the shops is not a place to take your dog? We were in a small clothes shop which is already a bit on the tight side, the three dogs in there did not make it any easier to get around. AIBU to think clothes shops should be dog free zones?

@WeHaveJoy so you do this in Dog friendly establishments?

A bloke is very unlikely to come barging into the cubicle, pulling the curtain back with his tail and exposing you to all and sundry

Or schooch under the dividing panel between cubicles and jump up you because he wants your attention.

Or maybe you know a different sort of man to me?

Yep. The type that claim to be women and are DESPERATE to get your attention. It's not their tail they wag though.

Love dogs but don't want their dirty paws, tongues, genitals and anuses in a chemist releasing germs anywhere near my medication being made up.

Tough, guide dogs are allowed in pharmacies and indeed everywhere.

It is working. Whenever I complain, the staff kick the person and their dog out.

Places that allow dogs, kick people out just for having a dog because you complain? I think someone is telling lies. 😅

IfYouLikePenisColadas · 10/04/2023 18:31

Absolutely agree. Can’t bear it. Wish shops would stop with this madness. Typical dog nutter entitlement though.

@WeHaveJoy

It's unsanitary and gross. I complain every time. I suggest you do too.

Out of interest, why do you think it's more unsanitary to have dogs somewhere public than the general public? SO many people don't observe even basic hand hygiene, and are just generally gross. I think hygiene in an eatery is far more dependent on the level of cleanliness (do the staff properly wipe down tables and seats, for example) than whether Rover came to tea.

I can understand the ick of the thought of dogs pushing past clothes in a clothing shop leaving whatever they have rolled in and loose hair, (I'm not pro-dogs in these spaces) but in all honestly I don't think dogs are any more gross than toddlers and many people!

People being gross is an issue, yes. But the state of humans does not make a dog any more sanitary. Dogs are filthy whether a human washes their hands or not.

Obviously, that's a must.
Vanity dogs are not.

No. Places I know (e.g. TKMaxx) that don't allow dogs, yet people bring them in regardless.
And supermarkets. I've complained in the CoOp, Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco so far. Every time, the staff agree and go and deal with it.

TheWordOfBagheera · 10/04/2023 18:36

I took my toddler to a big fabric shop. We turned to go down one aisle and were faced with a tiny unaccompanied dog baring its teeth and growling at us. Its esrs were flattened and it genuinely looked ready to attack and would not tolerate us entering that part of the shop (not that I even wanted to risk trying to squeeze past it).

I did complain that there was a dog behaving in a very aggressive manner. Shop owner said they knew. I said it shouldn't be in here as it isn't safe. Their response was that it's owner was a regular and so they weren't going to anything about it. I didn't really know what to do wirh that so left. Peraonally i don't mind a doggy pub or cafe so long they sit nicely with their owner and don't run around. Shops, not so much.

AlwaysGinPlease · 10/04/2023 18:40

@WeHaveJoy not true, TK Maxx stores all allow Dogs. They must be on lead. This is store wide.

If the shop allows pet dogs then they allow pet dogs. If you have an issue with it take it up with the management.

Where are you all living that dogs are everywhere? Clothes shop, shopping baskets, coffee shops.

I would like to move there 😊

Noseylittlemoo · 10/04/2023 18:50

The dogs being allowed in John Lewis is a newish thing as I work in a shop opposite a JL and unbelievably some customers would ask staff in our shop to look after their dog while they went in JL because they weren't allowed in! I find it annoying . I'm not a big fan of dogs but now more and more come into the shop I work at . Tbf a lot of dogs are well behaved but we've had dogs weeing and pooing in the shop, growling at other customers , barking and one even bit a member of staff!
We sell clothes and some ppl take their dog in the fitting rooms which I don't think is nice for the next person .

If they don’t allow dogs then obviously. But you told people to complain every time. That wouldn’t work where dogs are allowed. Our TK Max does allow dogs that are carried. The staff were all over our dogs last time we were in there.

You clearly have issues. Get help.

Redebs · 10/04/2023 18:54

Dogs don't belong in any shops. Or cafes or restaurants or schools or offices.

Pigs don't either.
Nor horses.

Guide dogs belong everywhere.

Pet dogs belong wherever they are allowed. As are pigs and horses.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 10/04/2023 19:01

We went to a cafe in a popular tourist spot last year. There was a sign saying that due to previous bad behaviour by dogs and their owners, dogs were no longer allowed in.

I asked the owner about it and he said it had started with one or two dogs at a time, lying under the tables and not causing a problem. Then it had gradually escalated to having dogs on seats, dogs being fed from the tables, dogs annoying other customers and the occasional wee or poo. He had had enough.

Inthesamesinkingboat · 10/04/2023 19:01

Shops allow it because they need to compete with the likes of Amazon and online shopping. There are more people who want to take their dogs shopping/cafe/restaurant etc than those who are outraged by dogs in such places and boycott them if they see dogs in there. It just makes commercials sense

SorePaw · 10/04/2023 19:08

And they seem to think their food has been stored and transported in sterile conditions. 😬

No Way Wow GIF

@SmileyHappyDoggos if only they knew 🤣😂

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/04/2023 19:14

Until recently, it was against public health regulations to have dogs in food shops; what has changed? It’s not the general unsanitariness of dogs, because that’s impossible.

No there weren't.

There are no laws in the UK that prevent dogs being present in places serving or selling food, nor have there been, although other than guide dogs they would not be allowed in kitchens.

vivainsomnia · 10/04/2023 19:29

There is a difference between domesticated and pretending it is part of your family
And that difference is up to individual to make. There is no definition if what domesticated is in relation to the role of the pet in the household.

It therefore comes down to individual families and....society.

You are fully entitled to not agree with the place dogs have in society. However, what you don't get to do is tell people to treat dogs are they wish as individuals and as society welcomes them. You do not get to dictate the above however much you think you do.

GreenWheat · 10/04/2023 19:46

BabychamGlass · 10/04/2023 15:15

Well no, there is another choice, although I understand you don't agree with it- to use dog friendly shops, of which there are more and increasingly more.

But dog owners seem to be taking it upon themselves to declare shops "dog friendly" by taking their dogs in there. John Lewis is not, as far as I am aware, a dog friendly shop, but people seem to think it's fine to take them in.

John Lewis have been officially allowing dogs in their shops since 2019...
