Dalai llama ask a child to suck his tongue

Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now

Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life.

I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser.

Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet.

However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all.

He has apologised on twitter now.

What do you all think?

Fucking sick of this shit. Every time a man abuses a kid or batters his wife or cheats on her or any other shit thing there's a little chorus of women saying "oh no, maybe he's got a brain tumour/is depressed/didn't mean it/was just joking/needs a doctor/is having a midlife crisis

No, he's just an abusive prick. Stop defending them.

Couldn't have said this any better!

I once met a Buddhist monk who asked a boy to hold out his hands so he could give him something. The monk then spat chewed up biscuits and tea into the boys hand. The boy thought it was hilarious and I saw it as something that kids might do as in a gross gag like ‘pull my finger’ or similar.

I know it’s not the same, but I think maybe there is an innocence there or cultural difference which makes this act as not intentionally sexual on any part by the Dalai Lama. At least I hope.

Completely and utterly misjudged by the Dalai Lama, but not abuse.

Disgusting how you casually minimise abuse. It is an act of abuse. You’re a deluded acolyte

It’s grim but he’s never been like that. Inappropriate sexual aggressiveness is a common symptom of dementia though. He what 87? 88?
Think they need to assess his mental capacity right away.
https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/daily-living/challenging-sexual-behaviour-dementia

Dementia does not cause people who have never had a sexual interest in children to develop a sexual interest in children.

@L3ThirtySeven

He wasn't essential kidnapped, as a child,

With his family permission he went away to live in Monks monastery, he revealed himself as a child to be re incarnation or channelling the deceased former Dalmi Lama
It's a tradition in that culture that every so often they go into a villages ect to see who possess the spirit of deceased Dalma in a precocious manner,
Like when they say a child has been here before,
Or
This child is an old soul ect type of thing

His family’s permission wasn’t necessary. They had no choice.

I find it sad that otherwise smart and able adults venerate such obviously fake charlatans

There is a lot of value attached to it among my middle class friends. It signals that they are kind, cultured people with empathy. In some cases, it is the only time in their lives that they have felt drawn to a belief group of any description so they are deeply invested in it. There are so many powerful leaders and celebrities affiliated with the DL and who contribute huge sums of money. I really hope that this isn't the start of something awful where the abuse of children becomes normalized, acceptable or even glorified.

LuluBlakey1 · 10/04/2023 15:42

It is very strange. He knows he is being filmed, it is all very public. I m not sure what it was intended as but it is most definitely not appropriate. I don't think it was necessarily intended as abusive but it is very strange.

Powerful person abuses his position.
Nothing new there.

BurrosTail · 10/04/2023 15:43

I’ve seen an adult kiss a child on lips in three different cultures and no one batted an eyelid. I think that should be reduced because it can make children feel uncomfortable because of bad breath, feeling shy or just generally uncomfortable, but to say it’s sexual is a very Anglo-American interpretation. The ‘suck the tongue’ is clearly a joke, especially in the Tibetan context of sticking the tongue out being normal, which he did, but he did not make the child actually suck his tongue.

It’s not my job to trawl through a website looking for things that you want to invent to say he has dementia.

Do your own dirty work.

Nor is it my job to educate you on dementia. 🤷‍♀️
Ive not invented anything.

Testina · 10/04/2023 13:13

“If even he is an abuser.

There's no one left. :(. This world is dark.”

This is hyperbolic nonsense.
People setting up individuals as some kind of pinnacle of moral perfection and in so doing handing them a fuckton of power only makes it easier for some people to abuse others.

You are suggesting that this one person’s actions means there is “no-one left”?

Ridiculous.

There’s me for a start. I am not an abuser.

Sounds like you have some hero worship going on and maybe should look for the plentiful light in the world of the “ordinary” people around you.

This.

as for the DL, this is gross. I can’t believe people are making excuses for him.

yes being effusive rgard Daili Lama is a middle class affectation, conspicuously virtue signalling how liberal one is , financially comfortable but untainted by dirty capitalism or money and oh so respectful of other cultures and their ways. It’s a fucking mc cliche

KnitGoodWomanKnit · 10/04/2023 15:46

Many people expect others to be one-dimensional. He talks about charity so he's perfect and doesn't have sick thoughts about other things and isn't capable of anything else.

Perfection, there's no such thing. The day we stop venerating people is the day we'll stop being shocked that someone good (in one or more areas) is capable of doing something bad.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 15:46

Flowerly · 10/04/2023 14:28

What that video shows is the abuse of a minor, very clearly. Whether you believe that the man has dementia or not, what that video shows is an abusive act.

How interesting that, before they can condemn it, certain posters want more evidence, more footage, posit theories that China have mocked this up, post links to dementia websites - all rather than come out and condemn this for the abuse that it is. How/why it happened is almost irrelevant but these people are clearly struggling to see what is in front of their eyes.

And we wonder that raped women struggle to be believed, that the victims of grooming gangs are gaslit and disbelieved, that Savile's victims were slated for compromising the name of a good man who did so much for charity. This was captured on film and it's the same appalling script time after time. Grim as fuck.

Everyone’s condemned his action before suggesting possibilities as to why he did it, myself included. If how/why it happened is so irrelevant than why the nastiness to anyone who suggests a possibility other than the one you prefer?

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 15:48

SpidersAreShitheads · 10/04/2023 14:51

I think it feels really shocking to us as there’s so much which isn’t a cultural norm here.

Kissing on the lips is normal in some cultures, including kissing children. Sticking out your tongue is also a cultural norm in countries like Tibet.

I think it’s a really ill-judged, silly joke that seems much worse to us because of cultural differences.

The Dalai Lana was up on a platform and well aware he’s being filmed. If he’s a sexual predator he’s done a fucking fantastic job of keeping any hint of it hidden for 87 years - but now suddenly he can’t contain an urge to ask a child to suck his tongue?! It doesn’t make sense.

The child is reluctant - his mum asked the Dalai Lama if the child could go on stage to greet him. I think it’s like when you were told to kiss an aged relative you didn’t really know as a child.

To be clear, I’m not some kind of paedo apologist. But you can tell from the reaction in the room that it’s just a joke. The Dalai Lama isn’t about to start abusing children on camera (unless the dementia theory is correct but I don’t believe so). He’s always been known for having a somewhat outrageous sense of humour for a spiritual leader and I think this was just a spectacularly bad example of it.

He’s not immune to a healthy dose of misogyny though - some of his previous comments have been disappointing.

Well balanced and reasonable suggestion.

what does even the mean. he’s literally just a man. Elevated & venerated by the gullible who falsely ascribe special or different qualities to him

this is what happen when you venerate an individual

I wonder if he was joking

I can’t see the video though

It was meant to be a joke.
Not funny and quite frankly it is disgusting. Even asking the boy to kiss him on the lips. Its just awful.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 15:51

Darkernights · 10/04/2023 15:41

Dementia does not cause people who have never had a sexual interest in children to develop a sexual interest in children.

The inappropriate sexual behaviour caused by dementia isn’t an indication of conscious or unconscious sexual interest. The best way to think of it is the brain is damaged and so behaviour happens that is totally out of character and not at all what the person would do or is like or is even interested in doing. There’s no intent behind it.

Phos · 10/04/2023 15:51

Mooshamoo · 10/04/2023 14:56

Yeah but you can see clearly that the child does not want to kiss the Dalai llama on the lips.

The Dalai llama grabs the child's chin and pulls him to him to make the child kiss him on the lips.

Whatever, dementia, missguidness, whatever. You can clearly see the child is uncomfortable and does not want to do it.

He should not remain in his position as Dalai llama.

I don't think you can resign from, or be forced to resign, being the Dalai Lama.

Xarrie · 10/04/2023 15:52

Absolutely vile. That poor boy.

UnsureSchool32 · 10/04/2023 15:52

I’ve never understood the western veneration of the DL. My family are Eastern not Buddhists but still we don’t think anything of him. Other than he’s a religious leader. whereas those who are not even Bhuddists in the West put him on a pedestal.

UnsureSchool32 · 10/04/2023 15:53

It’s the same as we see the Pope. It’s bizarre.

It’s a middle class affectation to denote how liberal & spiritual one is,by eschewing western values (not the pony,or the private school) for deeper spirituality
