Socialist vs Capitalist Easter Egg Hunts

Confrontayshunme · 09/04/2023 20:01

Growing up, my experience was a free-for-all where you got however many eggs you could find before they were all in baskets and gone. Tiny children got a few and older kids got more generally.

My DH's family hide all the eggs then have an elaborate system of division where everyone gets the same- from 2 year olds to teenagers.

Decide the debate once and for all: Which one is best?

YABU - Socialist "No, you already have a Malteaser Bunny so Give Your Brother That One" Egg Hunts

YANBU - Capitalist "You Get What You Get And Maybe Next Year You Will Be Better at Finding Them" Egg Hunts

Some varistion of the socialist system!

Hankunamatata · 09/04/2023 20:31

Several egg hunts iv ran. I set out plastic eggs and they bring them back to exchange for real thing

CatNamedBob · 09/04/2023 20:33

Socialist approach to egg hunts here. My parents did the same when I was a child.

AlltheFs · 09/04/2023 20:34

I think ours is a dictatorship as DD is an only and hunts all by herself. She has an obscene amount (but as a responsible parent I will eat the majority while she is sleeping).

Poppins2016 · 09/04/2023 20:35

We name all packaged eggs and then we say that everyone has (for e.g.) one creme egg allocated each.

It's fair and it enables you to be age appropriate regarding size, amount and location. We make it easy for children but tougher (and amusingly difficult) for adults.

meaniemaybe · 09/04/2023 20:36

We assign an adult to shadow the youngest. Then all adults help the kids with their eggs when they’re asleep.

avocadotofu · 09/04/2023 20:37

When I was little we had socialists egg hunts. We all looked for the eggs together and then shared them out. There were four of us and we were all happy.

Keepthetowel · 09/04/2023 20:39

each person has their name on their fairly allocated eggs. If you find someone else’s you keep quiet and continue looking for your own, number of eggs each announced in advance, one large and several small eggs/small packets of sweets

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 09/04/2023 20:40

Socialist - cba with arguments capitalist inevitably lead to. Make own life deliberately difficult - nah...

Capitalist as a child by virtue of going to external farm place where it wasn't just siblings but all the other kids there.

This is such a weird post

This is a great post! We need more gentle weirdness on MN.

wonderstuff · 09/04/2023 20:45

Socialist here, plastic coloured eggs (1 colour each) in a trail with clues courtesy of my step-dad, kids 9-19 enjoyed. I’ve done free for all before and kids have known to redistribute fairly at the end.

thaegumathteth · 09/04/2023 20:45

Had 12,11 and 7 year olds doing a hunt today. They went round together solving the clues and each hiding place had 3 of whatever it was .

An effective capitalist would work with the other most effective people to get the most, then share charitably with the others.

I just picture you looking like the lady from Dragon's Den. 😆

I think in our world, the adults "help" no matter the style of hunt. I remember saving a specific type of marshmallowy egg because I knew it was my Granny's favourite.

Fascist Easter Egg hunt here.

Kids hunt for the eggs. I then take and eat the eggs, leaving them the ones I don't like.

crackofdoom · 09/04/2023 20:51

I'm a socialist in life and a redistributive anarcho- capitalist when it comes to Easter Egg hunts. In that I slip DS2 a few extra from the stash in my pocket, and tax DS1 heavily.

Incidentally, we're on holiday in Italy atm, and today's "Easter egg" hunt in a park in Rome actually involved toffees, because I couldn't find any mini eggs 😬

Elsanore · 09/04/2023 20:51

My poor MIL did an egg hunt for DD and grandad. Of 12 eggs, DD found 7, grandad found 4 and poor MIL is driving herself demented searching the garden for the last one. She can't remember where she hid it (on Friday- still looking).

Did you read on another thread about the fox getting all the chocolate eggs this morning in someone's garden?? Maybe the capitalist egg hunters can sound the bugle and summon the hounds to chase it away.

Confrontayshunme · 09/04/2023 20:52

Mylobsterteapot · 09/04/2023 20:08

I hide different colour resuable plastic eggs filled with sweets/chocolate. Then each child looks for alloacted colours.

Well that is just too reasonable. What about us lazy parents who just want to chuck them in bushes and not do all that work? 😉

I’m all for gentle weirdness and even super weird weirdness but this is more of a ‘giving the kids the same no of eggs each is breeding communists and anti-competitive. Also, privatise healthcare!’ vibe

Dox9 · 09/04/2023 20:53

I don't know which category we are. Treasure trail, some clues have a small egg or a figurine, some are just clues. Bigger egg at the end. Just one child though. We have suggested inviting friends but that's how dc prefers it.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/04/2023 20:54

We went with "there are 8 eggs out here, and 2 of you. Once you've found 4, you're done, go inside and eat them."

Cantseethewindows · 09/04/2023 20:55

ApolloandDaphne · 09/04/2023 20:20

Always capitalist. As the dictator I would even things out by taking from the child with the most. It has proved to be good learning!

I'm a communist dictator: socialist version but with indoctrination - "Remember DS1, you are SHARING with DS2!!! Don't forget, you're sharing!" They are only 2 and 4 though and equally shit at finding them

meaniemaybe · 09/04/2023 20:56

I think it’s possible you’re overthinking.

VioletCharlotte · 09/04/2023 20:57

My parents used to divide the garden in two with a rope and we used to search one side each. Both for exactly the same number of eggs. We continued this tradition with my DC and nephews and nieces.

The other way isn't really fair and would just lead to tears and tantrums!
