Socialist vs Capitalist Easter Egg Hunts

Confrontayshunme · 09/04/2023 20:01

Growing up, my experience was a free-for-all where you got however many eggs you could find before they were all in baskets and gone. Tiny children got a few and older kids got more generally.

My DH's family hide all the eggs then have an elaborate system of division where everyone gets the same- from 2 year olds to teenagers.

Decide the debate once and for all: Which one is best?

YABU - Socialist "No, you already have a Malteaser Bunny so Give Your Brother That One" Egg Hunts

YANBU - Capitalist "You Get What You Get And Maybe Next Year You Will Be Better at Finding Them" Egg Hunts

My mum used to tell us that we could find eg. 5 each and when we had our 5 we could either start munching or sometimes me and my older DB would help younger DB find the rest of his (8 year age gap)

MotherofBingo · 09/04/2023 21:02

We share, it's the fairest way and saves arguments, I take the view that it's not a competition and shouldn't be treated like one.

IridescentShadow · 09/04/2023 21:03

We have the same number of hollow eggs in different colours filled identically and each Child looks just for their colour. Super fair.

BobBobBobbing · 09/04/2023 21:06

All eggs get put in the same basket for later sharing and subject to a tithe by each parent

Confrontayshunme · 09/04/2023 21:09

@UniversalMamma

If it helps, I am pretty much socialist in every respect except egg hunts! I just think a bit of competition made my childhood hunts memorable, and my DBIL figured out early on that he can literally not join the hunt and still get eggs, which I think is terribly unfair.

I think it's best to have both types. 😉

Girasoli · 09/04/2023 21:11

Marxist egg hunt with everyone helping the youngest and then helping DBro (33!) because DM couldn't remember where she'd hid his egg and she didn't want it melting in the sun.

aSofaNearYou · 09/04/2023 21:11

We put names on the big one's so you leave it if you find someone else's.

We shared the little ones - my DSS would have found them all before my DD found any otherwise.

RheneasAndSkarloey · 09/04/2023 21:12

I have 4 kids and place 4 eggs in each hiding place. Each kid just takes one.

Sleeptightnightlight · 09/04/2023 21:13

Our family does socialist egg hunts because when they were little they loved finding the eggs but I didn't want them having tons of sugar so I bought more eggs than I wanted them eating and said they had to divide up between everyone (including the adults).

Now it has become a 'tradition' and the children look forward the the great divide off as much as the hunt.

PortiasBiscuit · 09/04/2023 21:13

Depends how well I know the children, did an egg hunt for a christening party this morning and left the parents to thrash it out. Had it been my children and other children I know, I would have collected everything and divided up carefully.

UrsulaBelle · 09/04/2023 21:14

We put names on the eggs and you had to find your own. Seemed to work.

Hesma · 09/04/2023 21:14

My girls go round together, everything is left in pairs and they take one each.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 09/04/2023 21:17

Socialists here and there were howls of outrage from DS2 (3) this morning when DS1 (7) found the majority. For anyone who doubted the origin of the phrase “hopping mad”, I raise you my youngest 😂. Mine had a big individual egg each and a chocolate rabbit, but all smaller eggs go into a communal bowl for everyone to help themselves to.

Inthesamesinkingboat · 09/04/2023 21:22

@meaniemaybe you wouldn’t want the help of the adult s in our family… they’d go full capitalist and become management consultants, charging more in fees than the “clients” made in profits

SushiGo · 09/04/2023 21:26

Socialist! Like others we use plastic coloured eggs, and the kids look for one colour each.

It's east to rig it for toddlers and put less chocolate in their colour eggs but they still had the fun of searching and opening them.

This year one of the children wrote a puzzle hunt for the adults and we had to work in a team to get our chocolate too!

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 09/04/2023 21:26

All Easter egg hunts are capitalist because someone has managed to convince you to buy Easter tat.

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 09/04/2023 21:27

(We do socialist ones because my DC would kill each other with their bare hands if it were a free for all)

We've had much hopping mad-ness from my 4yo this weekend. It's all in the spirit of Easter 😂

I'm glad you posted this, after reading your first message!😆

whatalovelydayontheintergoodlord · 09/04/2023 21:38

Communist easter egg hunt - everyone gets just one identical egg. No competition, no individualisation, no choice.

CosieRotton · 09/04/2023 21:38

Socialist all the way! We always knew how many eggs each we were allowed and when we’d found them we could stop, but mostly we just enjoyed helping anyone still hunting.

Whatthechicken · 09/04/2023 21:41

Communist egg hunt? I write clues, place two eggs and the next clue in each place (one egg each). I have a very long garden, I plan a clue at the top, the next at the bottom, they go up and down the garden about 14 times (takes about 40 mins, running as children do). They have to work together and stay together, taking it in turns to read the clues, I deduct eggs if they don’t work together. I, as the supervisor, sit on a bench drinking wine. They end up being tired, compliant and ready for bed early.

Pashy · 09/04/2023 21:43

Hunts are not for weaklings.

MissDollyMix · 09/04/2023 21:46

Ours are run in a capitalist fashion but my kids are obviously socialists because they have decided to pool their haul anyway. Everyone has one named big egg though. The rest is a free-for-all. Except for the dog. She’s not allowed to take part for obvious reasons.
