Vanish Supporting Autism Advert

I don't normally watch terrestrial TV, but watching the voyage of the dawn treader on C4, and the advert for vanish keeps coming up.

It looks like a deep meaningful maybe a charity or awareness advert, and then it's "vanish" a cleaning product

My ds (autistic) was also wtf about it

They could have easily jumped on the Trans / non-binary bandwagon like lots of other businesses. I do think it’s good that autism is getting some light. There’s a McCain advert also.

Not a fan? Hilarious. And inappropriate. You don’t have much insight yourself it seems.

Not a joke. Your posts have made it clear that you don't like is and think we're undeserving and taking resources away from those you consider more deserving.

It's a pity it went with the stereotypes of autistic savant. Most people with autism aren't maths geniuses or artists.

The sister in the ad was a sad reminder of all the quiet, long-suffering siblings, so that was realistic.

Advertisers are pretty despicable though, for using a disorder to sell soap powder

So all this money raised to help support autism has actually gone on an advertising campaign where there is a massive problem with people especially kids getting autism diagnosis.

How many people could have got that paid for privately rather than spent on a fucking advert?

Or how many schools could have got donations to help with SEN budgets?

Sorry, but it annoys me even more knowing this.

It's the charity sector spunking money up the wall on PR rather than actually helping people.

Channel 4 gave the winner £1 million worth of advertising timeslots- not actual cash or funding but allowed the advert to be shown without the brand having to pay for certain slots; seems fair enough to me. The charity supported the production company who made the advert, I'd say that's also a fair use of resource- Vanish are also donating money from sales of certain products to them which I'm sure will balance out the time they spent on the process.

to be fair we saw her getting some high school maths right. That is hardly portraying a genius!

No danger of this being exploitative of this yp? Wow.

No, no danger of breach of GDPR. Which is what I said.

Rosula · 10/04/2023 22:33

BUT this girl & family have been talked into exploiting her needs by depicting her real life for an advert which will profit a massive brand as they can be seen as Autism allies now.

How do you know they were talked into anything, @NurseCranesRolodex?

So you think we shouldnt portray people with autism on the TV in case ableist people think they just need to change their behaviour, and its just bad parenting?

Abelist people think that anyway, that shouldnt stop ND people from being portrayed in media

I am not saying Autism should not be portrayed, but it depends on what the desired outcome is. If the aim was to raise funding for Autism charities i, i think they have missed the mark. That advert showing the kid in such a wholly negative way, based on that ad i would not want to allocate my finite charitable giving to autism,

So you only donate to children who you think have good behaviour worthy of being supported by charity

I mean I guess that's one way to choose

And the accuse autistic people of lacking empathy.

That is such a perceptive and thought provoking post.

This is so well thought out and written .Both my teen DD's are high functioning but both different .One has learnt a coping mechanism with the support of her amazing friends who have gone to the same secondary she can block out the noise, hates crowds and eye contacts, hates change being late some of the school food but she is doing amazing at school .My older teen DD missed most of secondary schooling because she just could not cope like her sister so goes to a smaller amazing specialist school like Ash hood always up,ear pods in to shut out the world and gets easily sensory overloaded .They can clash for the reasons .youngest DD very blunt to the point of could be classed as rude ,older DD has the biggest meltdowns so both very different .It certainly can be a balance

PopGoesTheProsecco · 11/04/2023 20:15

Personally I loved the advert. It was a hugely emotional watch, Ash is so like my (autistic) 16yo DD1. And as well as being sympathetic to the autistic child it also showed empathy for the family around them.

I just hope my daughter’s pastoral team watch it as, like Ash, she finds comfort in her hoodie and gets told off for wearing it at school.

it took us 4.5 years to get her autism diagnosed. I hope this ad really raises awareness and understanding of autism in girls.

Zwellers · 18/04/2023 23:18

I dislike this ad because the sister is made out to be the bad person. In fact I struggle to see the relevance of the product to the ad as a whole. I also don't believe the drums are in the living room.
