Should the holiday park of let us know?

We booked a caravan for 3 nights, it’s only 15 minutes from home but we and the kids love it. We’ve been several times.

Its really small and secure, so the kids take their bikes and off they go. They make friends, cycle round, hang out at the park and games room. We basically see them for food and drinks so it’s a break for hubby and I, we get to read, play cards. Let me reiterate though how small this caravan park is, we don’t neglect the kids. We often walk round the park and see what they are up to (football mostly on the field).

So, we get there yesterday to find, apart from the older couples that own caravans and a family with very young children, we are the only ones there. They had to make the decision to cancel all of their camping/touring caravans due to the ground being so wet. Such a shame seeing how lovely the weather is now.
So, kids are bored out of their mind as there’s no one to play with, and we can’t entertain them that much as there isn’t a lot to do there if your not a kid.
We decided to come home after 1 night. The guy on reception was understanding of the situation and apologised we hadn’t had the experience we normally have.
Manager is away until next week.
AIBU to call next week and ask for a refund as the people they’d cancelled had got?
Im torn, I’m not sure if I should or not so would like other peoples perspective.
Our holiday could go ahead because of the recent rain as we were in a caravan, but the holiday experience was massively impacted?

A disappointment for your kids, but from a site managers pov they would see it is an achievement that they were able to offer you accommodation and go ahead with your booking. Rather than cancel you as they had to do for many other disappointed people .

Is there nothing else to do in the vicinity? Have a BBQ, a campfire, do activities you would normally do on a holiday?

hiredandsqueak · 08/04/2023 17:28

Why would you go just fifteen minutes from home to stay in a caravan? Surely it's more comfortable at home? Of course you can't ask for a refund, you didn't pay for the company of other children for yours did you?

OldTinHat · 08/04/2023 17:28

YABU.

It's not the park's responsibility to populate it with children to keep yours entertained.

Am I the only person who wonders why anyone would want to stay in a caravan 15 minutes from home?

And somehow not be able to entertain your own children despite this.

Maybe they don’t know that you are allowed to leave caravan sites and then come back.

If it's a fully kitted out site it's not really much different to going somewhere two hours away, to be fair.

It’s 15 minutes from home. They can just do all the normal shit they do anyway. Or they could probably pick up a couple of actual friends for the kids whose parents would be happy for them to have a day at the local caravan site.

WakeMeUpInspring · 08/04/2023 17:32

Absolutely nuts 😂😂😂😂😂

Well it is different really. Two hours away from home there'll be things to do and see that you wouldn't normally do and see if you were at home. 15 minutes away is still on your doorstep.

So you were in a static caravan and they cancelled the bookings of tents and mobile caravans? Don't you feel bad for the campsite that they have lost revenue over the Easter weekend due to the weather? Don't you think asking for them to have to refund more money just because there weren't any children for your kids to play with is a tad unfair?!

This with bells on

ChickenDhansak82 · 08/04/2023 17:38

This has got to be a wind up?!?!

You go on holiday but come home after 1 day as there is no one else to entertain your kids?!?!

How about entertain them yourself. Have some quality time with them?!

Pippa12 · 08/04/2023 17:39

Your kidding with this aren’t you 😂

Brendabigbaps · 08/04/2023 17:39

Nope!

couldn’t be bothered to read the rest of the replies, parent your own children.
would you like a check list of who and the ages for every holiday you go on?

SquidwardBound · 08/04/2023 17:42

This is my favourite bit: we can’t entertain them that much as there isn’t a lot to do there if your not a kid.

It just makes no sense. We can’t entertain the kids because there is only kids stuff to do.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 08/04/2023 17:45

The people they had to cancel were cancelled because their holiday couldn't go ahead because of the weather/safety.

Your holiday was able to go ahead, you just chose to leave early. Doesn't matter why you chose to leave early, the fact is it was your choice.

No you're not entitled to a refund because there was no guests on site to befriend your children.

You should have just made it into a family break - played games in the caravan, eaten take out, parents v kids kickabout, cricket/rounders.

AppallinglyReheated · 08/04/2023 17:46

Would you be asking for a refund if the holiday place had been full... but no one had any kids with them?

I doubt it - its not the holiday parks fault, they did not promise to provide other kids so you can't expect a refund on the basis they've not provided something they don't actually promise!

MorganKitten · 08/04/2023 17:51

You are ridiculous

Whataretheodds · 08/04/2023 17:07

My rates are very reasonable

you missed the “your” that should have been “you’re”

LittleMousewithcloggson · 08/04/2023 18:25

Not only can I not believe the question, I also can’t believe that 3% think the op is being reasonable!!!

Blondone · 08/04/2023 18:26

I work for a holiday park where exactly this happened this weekend. Many of the campers in tents and motorhomes wanted to still come. It was horrible trying to help find other places to stay and moving folks around, most folks didn't want a refund just help. The static vans customers were very happy they still had a holiday so nothing essentially changed for them other than the muddy grass. The pool, amusements and entertainment etc where all still the same. If you think this is a bonkers complaint you should come and work with us. You would not believe some reasons people want refunds for. 😊

TeaAndTattoos · 08/04/2023 18:27

Let me see if I’ve got this right you want a refund because the camp didn’t provide kids to keep your kids entertained and you instead had to take care of your own kids and that’s camps fault because…. YABU and you know I can’t believe what I’m reading this has to be a joke you can’t actually be serious.

Vitriolinsanity · 08/04/2023 18:35

Brilliant! Definitely complain. Totally cane them on Trip Advisor. Did you get a picture of the kids on their own with an empty football pitch? Riding around and around on their bikes without a friend to be found? It's fucking tragic, and no mistake.

I bet the Manager saw you coming and just bunged the counter guy an extra £20 to deal with you.

EnchentButteler · 08/04/2023 18:36

You are absolutely being unreasonable! I don't think I've seen such a CF in many a year.

You go 15 minutes from home because then your kids can play with other kids in a low risk environment. There aren't any other kids but that's not the park's fault. Also the park will have lost loads of money from the cancelled campers/tourers yet you want to ask for the guaranteed money they did get back because of something completely beyond their control and when they have absolutely no responsibility to entertain your kids!

How busy the park is is absolutely no reason to cancel and get a refund as they will give no guarantees on that when you book. If the pool was closed or pitch waterlogged or equipment broken I could understand a partial refund but you would definitely be a CF if you asked for your money back because your kids didn't have anyone to play with.

Can you imagine how cheeky that would sound coming out of your mouth? Then don't say it.
