Listening to Ladies and Gentlemen this morning while doing some admin on the laptop. I just love his voice, its heaven to listen to and i wish he was still alive, but happy with himself and his life.

Who's singing voice just does it for you?

Agree about George Michael and very much regret that I never saw him live.

Was listening to Karen Carpenter sing Masquerade recently and Steve Wright announced she had the perfect voice. I absolutely agree that her voice had such a beautiful tone. Another one taken far too soon.

Him singing 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is just fabulous.

Other voices for me - Karen Carpenter, Dusty Springfield, Judith Durham, Paul Simon (with and without Art Garfunkel), James Taylor.

Yes. His Older album is just pure heaven. My favourite is Eddie Vedder though, especially Just Breathe and his music from the film Into The Wild.

Oblomov23 · 08/04/2023 17:56

I too think he had a great voice, very musically blessed.

Blessedbea · 08/04/2023 17:57

He was before my time but I still love his voice

Errolwasahero · 08/04/2023 17:57

Oh yes, absolutely love Karen Carpenter! Voice of my childhood.

What an absolute darling he was. Such a powerful, emotional voice, so much control, it seemed effortless.

+1 to the Mozzer heartbreak. When songs like ‘Bengali in platforms’ and ‘National Front Disco’ started to bleed through it felt like cognitive dissonance. How could he seem to be expressing these views, when his whole persona was surely at odds with such foul brutal thinking? But with time there were more and more.

That video of him in a basement singing ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ as if racist nationalism made him a rebel.

If you haven’t seen the Simpsons episode about ‘The Snuffs’ and ‘Quilloughby’ please do - it really encapsulates both the early heady excitement of getting into the Smiths, and then the disappointment of what Morrissey became.

So true. We went to see him a few times but his politics would stop me now.

BigBagOfElbows · 08/04/2023 18:02

Can I add KD Lang to the list? Another effortless singer and although I'm not a fan of all her stuff, her version if Crying (not the duet with Roy Orbison) and Hallelujah are perfection.

Lilifer · 08/04/2023 18:04

Sorry don't want to derail this but I keep seeing references to Morriseys awful politics, what has he said? Can someone link me to more info on this, I've been a Morrisey fan (up till now anyway) so curious to know what he had said/done??

Laurdo · 08/04/2023 18:07

His voice is sublime and he was a beautiful kind person too.

Also massive fan of both John Mayer and Chris Cornell's voices.

Totally agree with George Michael
Other who I admire but don't necessarily enjoy

Karen carpenter
Frank Sinatra (his timing was perfect)
Nat King Cole
Barbra Streisand
Adele
Luther Vandross. Another taken far too young

'I can't make you love me' is my favourite too. Fabulous voice.

Cowboys and angels is my fave.

Beautiful inside and out with the voice of an angel. 😢

Phos · 08/04/2023 18:18

George Michael had a beautiful voice.

I also need to add Roy Orbison as a technically brilliant vocalist with a wonderful and unique tone.

mrswhiplington · 08/04/2023 18:20

'Songs from the Last Century' is a great album. I love 'Miss Sarajevo'. He sings the old songs so beautifully.

BinkyBeaufort · 08/04/2023 18:23

Oh dear, I've just fallen down a very deep rabbit hole watching and listening to the great man, so thank you op for starting this thread.
A Different Corner always gives me goosebumps and tears.
The voice of an angel indeed. I still miss him, and am so sad he's gone. I can't think of another singer with so much left to give.
IMHO Ella Fitzgerald had the greatest female voice ever and George the best male. Sigh...

Yy I think it was Elvis who said Roy Orbison was the best singer he had ever heard.
also agree that George had a beautiful voice one of my biggest regrets is not seeing him in concert, a beautiful person.

MrsJamin · 08/04/2023 18:46

His album Songs from the last century is just beautiful, he had an incredible voice. RIP George

Not a fan BUT, he sang a song titled, 'I can't make you love me'. His voice, his range in that song I thought was phenomenal and deeply haunting. It's my all time favourite.

Lots of his songs have truly heartbreaking lyrics so clever and wonderful to listen to

belikejeff · 08/04/2023 13:22

George had a good voice yes. It was the content that let it down. Not my cup of tea at all.

By all accounts a lovely bloke though, I liked him a lot... except his boring songs!

Boring ? Are you for real.

Can not believe anybody could say that. Have you actually take the time to really listen to his lyrics ?

I can't listen to A Different Corner without shedding a tear as it's so beautiful and I miss George . Gone far too soon.

Me too. I was watching the one from Parkinson on YouTube the other night and was 😢

Morrissey singing Come Back to Camden is peak shivers down the spine for me.

Me too! It's mesmerizing.

I wasn’t a massive fan of his music- just not really my preferred style- but his voice really was fantastic. I think I only really realised that after he died. I also believe he was a very good and generous person.

Me too. I watched the Freedom Uncut documentary recently and only then realized how incredible his voice was. Peerless.
