To think M&S use of Enola Gay in their current advertisement is just crass in the current climate?

As above.

Why post in AIBU if you're going to tell anyone saying YABU that they're an ignoramus or 'fucking ridiculous'?

sst1234 · 07/04/2023 01:47

An in today’s installment of things to to be offended by…..

Ok OP, we get it. You know what the WW2 bomber was called.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2023 01:49

So you have just proved this point, OP - "Or is it just an exercise in finding offence because you can?"

Aren't people allowed to disagree with you and still be intelligent?

I think reasoned debate (rather than insulting everyone who doesn't agree with you) is intelligent.

If you genuinely picture burned off clothes when you hear that song, I can see why. Many of us just hear a school disco. That song was played everywhere at the time.

Greenshake · 07/04/2023 01:49

Well this went downhill quickly 😐

Napalm did that, not an atomic bomb.
At least get your facts right.

Nothing offends you....yet here you are, all offended about an old song 😂

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/04/2023 01:54

😂🤣 are always a good sign you are sitting stony-faced at the keyboard being PA. They are never about laughing.

I think sleep is a great idea. Happy Easter.

Northernsouloldies · 07/04/2023 01:54

The famous photo of the girl with her skin burnt was taken during the Vietnam War. Not having a pop at you op.

SinnerBoy · 07/04/2023 02:05

I read an interview with the woman who was the little Vietnamese girl, who was burned. It really gladdened me to learn that she had survived and done very well for herself.

Good for her. Such a horrific image.

Have a dance.

I will. I've actually got it playing now.
I thought you'd gone to bed anyway.

PigletJohn · 07/04/2023 02:09

Sixty thousand died quickly at Hiroshima, many more died slowly.

Wouldn't be my choice for a cheery advert. Or a song.

WishingMyLifeAway · 07/04/2023 02:30

That song is unusual as it's has chirpy and uplifting dancy music but has a sad meaning. It's a very commonly played pop song of its time and the tune from the song has been used multiple times in many contexts. I don't think the meaning has to be carried across to other contexts where a sample is used.

I think YABU and finding things to be offended by.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/04/2023 02:31

It was an anti war track wasn’t it? At a time when nuclear threat was real. Idk if anyone at M&S knows this.

Willyoujustbequiet · 07/04/2023 02:37

I agree OP.

Have to admit I raised an eyebrow when I saw the advert. It made feel uncomfortable. Not offended but its poor taste.

OP, if you create a thread with absolutely no context (or even content) whatsoever and then and only post snippy and aggressive comments, you don’t really have the right the look down on others for their perceived lack of intelligence

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 07/04/2023 02:40

ArmitageShanked · 07/04/2023 01:43

Oh Gousto - the mantra for living these days 🙄

I'm a child of 70s/80s. I wouldn't put on my play list for a party.

Did M&S not know they were supposed to ask you, random internet person, for your opinion first?

Translation: not everyone agreed with me and congratulated me on my incredible insight so I’m flouncing.

Also YABVU. The lyrics/meaning to Enola Gay are not “Hurrah isn’t nuclear war brilliant”. It’s about tragedy and fear in war. Your misplaced concern for supposedly triggered people is beyond ridiculous.
