To ask for a car for tall DHs back

DHsPoorBack · 06/04/2023 23:36

Bit of a weird one.

DH is very tall and has to do a lot of driving for work. He needs a car big enough for him to sit in, so things Fiesta sized are way out, and we've slowly worked our way through various estates and 4x4s, all of which have given him terrible back ache.

He's essentially after a sofa on wheels, uber comfy. Debating a landcruiser, but they are pretty hard to come by and quite dear for what they are. So, can I ask, if you have an extra large DH, what is the comfiest thing they've driven?

On the tried and "no" list so far:
Audi Q7
Nissan Pathfinder
VW Amarok
Volvo XC90
Mitsubishi L200
BMW estates
VW Touraeg
Range Rover (all models, bar Velar)

He finds the seats too hard on everything, and lacking in any real support, and anything over a 2hr drive can render him quite seized up and immobile for the next few days. Not too fussed on whether it's a 2023 or a 2003 plate, comfort is the key.

Thank you in advance!

Citroen Berlingo? A bit van-ish, but v comfy according to my large DH

SpringBlossomJoy · 06/04/2023 23:38

Mini Countryman. They are great and definitely not mini!
You really want a German car as they generally accommodate tall people well.

IShouldGoToSleep · 06/04/2023 23:39

Or if you want something small on the outside, but large on the inside, Honda Jazz?

MrsMorton · 06/04/2023 23:40

How tall? I have friends 6ft4 up to 7ft1. Let me know & I'll ask.

CrikeyPeg · 06/04/2023 23:49

Try a Jeep. We had an older Grand Cherokee, it was literally a sofa on wheels so cornering etc was a bit squidgy/not that flash at higher speeds but was very comfortable to travel in. My 6'4 husband could get out of the Jeep after four hours driving and his back/body was fine.

Pixiedust1234 · 06/04/2023 23:50

My husband is 6ft 4 and fits in my fiesta comfortably.

What you are describing seems to be more about lumbar support. He needs a cushion for the small of his back (I cant get comfortable in any car unless my lumbar is supported, to the point of seizing up and crying in pain)

msbevvy · 06/04/2023 23:58

My DH is tall and has had 3 fails back operations. When looking for a car our number one priority was a comfortable seat for him. We ended up getting a Citroen C4 Spacetourer.

DBro is 6'4" and drives a Berlingo.

Mochinated · 07/04/2023 00:00

Jaguar have longer leg room

ModeWeasel · 07/04/2023 00:02

Has he already joined the Tall Club? They are good for lots of info like this.

Talipesmum · 07/04/2023 00:03

Agree about the lumbar support. My long backed DH used one for ages.

DP 6’5” DS 6’4”
I’m 5’4” DD is 5’2”
we share a variety of VW mainly passats with occasional golf and an Audi a4
i have a bad back and can do 6 hrs plus in mine without issues
Due to accidents etc I’ve had to try hire cars and have struggled with everything from quashqais to m

JaceLancs · 07/04/2023 00:05

Mokkas

FiledAwayInABox · 07/04/2023 00:06

That's so funny that others are suggesting Berlinger too 😂😂
I came to say belingo. I've had all sorts of normal cars including mercs, bmws, Audis etc but that belingo I had was so comfortable. Cloth seats and excellent visibility.
Not the best looking car

FiledAwayInABox · 07/04/2023 00:09

Is he long legged or long backed. Obviously he is both...
One of my DS is 6'3 and drives a skoda Fabia - he sits quite upright.

whatthebejesus · 07/04/2023 00:12

We have a 2020 plate ford focus estate vignale. It's lovely and loads of room plus adjustable lumbar support

Like others above, if the issue is his back (rather than pain in his leg which would indicate not enough leg room) then he needs to be looking for adjustable lumbar support. He can just look to upgrade the seat in the current car rather than buy a new one. All chairs come out and can be changed

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 07/04/2023 00:16

Honda CRV. And tell him to stop fannying about. He's not gigantically tall by any means, he's just making a fuss. Should fit fine into most cars.

vdbfamily · 07/04/2023 00:17

My DH is 6'7 and we have a Renault Grand Scenic. The roof is high and front window gives great visibility. Not sure the comfort for bad back. As others say, maybe an overlay with lumbar support

user1485155939 · 07/04/2023 00:27

Kia sportage, my husband is really tall and he's absolutely fine and the car is so comfortable!

GinaGina22 · 07/04/2023 00:31

Skoda superb

Lunde · 07/04/2023 00:38

DH is 6' 8, has spinal problems and drives a Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Galaxy and Nissan Qashqai without problems but is unable to drive a Mercedes GLS, most Volvos and got stuck in a Nissan Leaf

Amipreg1 · 07/04/2023 00:41

Skoda superb. Loads of room!

CoffeeAndCreativity · 07/04/2023 00:41

My DH is tall, I drive a Skoda Karoq which he can manage fine for short journeys but his vehicle is a VW Transporter which he absolutely loves, the driving position is much different from a car. He does a lot of driving and wouldn't consider anything else.

Loved my SpaceTourer - heated front seats with back massager were great too, especially in long journeys.

DHsPoorBack · 07/04/2023 11:23

I've not explained this well...

It's not so much recommendations for cars he should fit in. It's comfy seats we need.

I've had a plethora of smaller cars as well, just haven't mentioned those.

He finds the seats in everything really hard on his back, so looking for any ideas for large cars (we have three DC as well, not just for DH purposes) that have really comfy soft seats...
