To ask for a car for tall DHs back

DHsPoorBack · 06/04/2023 23:36

Bit of a weird one.

DH is very tall and has to do a lot of driving for work. He needs a car big enough for him to sit in, so things Fiesta sized are way out, and we've slowly worked our way through various estates and 4x4s, all of which have given him terrible back ache.

He's essentially after a sofa on wheels, uber comfy. Debating a landcruiser, but they are pretty hard to come by and quite dear for what they are. So, can I ask, if you have an extra large DH, what is the comfiest thing they've driven?

On the tried and "no" list so far:
Audi Q7
Nissan Pathfinder
VW Amarok
Volvo XC90
Mitsubishi L200
BMW estates
VW Touraeg
Range Rover (all models, bar Velar)

He finds the seats too hard on everything, and lacking in any real support, and anything over a 2hr drive can render him quite seized up and immobile for the next few days. Not too fussed on whether it's a 2023 or a 2003 plate, comfort is the key.

Thank you in advance!

Jaguar have longer leg room

Yes but the seats in ours have terrible lumber support so not great for DH on long journeys

EndofDaze · 07/04/2023 19:52

Heated seats are a real game changer. Provide relief for aching muscles. Will often have heated seats on and ac set to 16c. Also had cooled seats in one particular car but that always meant I had to check I hadn’t wee’d myself!!! No discernible benefit to the back problem. 🤣

timtam23 · 07/04/2023 19:53

I have a 6' DH and a Ford C Max which we both find comfortable to drive, the seats are very adjustable and don't hurt my back. If that's a bit small for fitting 3 children in (I have 2) there is the S Max and the Galaxy both of which are bigger

Brunelofbrio · 07/04/2023 19:58

DH really likes his Citroen c4 Picasso

Riverlee · 07/04/2023 20:00

My 6 ft 5 loves our VW t-roc. Plenty of room, good driving position and very comfortable.i

Monsterjam · 07/04/2023 20:09

My fiat 500l is a sofa on wheels

Apairofsparklingeyes · 07/04/2023 20:34

The heated seats definitely help, especially on a cold day.

BoredOfCbeebies · 07/04/2023 20:43

Skoda Octavia - and my husband is 6 ft 5 with chronic back issues. Very comfortable and spacious

SparklyShoesandTutus · 07/04/2023 20:52

Check out ford vignale range, really comfortable compared to other ranges. Kuga os a great size

DannyZukosSmile · 07/04/2023 21:22

Wow, such a massive amount of VERRRRY TALL husbands on here. 😂 6 ft 4, and 6 ft 5, and 6 ft 6... and even taller.......

In real life, hardly any men are that tall. The parallel universe of mumsnet strikes again. Bet all of these VERY tall husbands are on £160K a year too, and have a 'long commute,' and the wives of the VERY TALL husbands (posting on this thread,) are teeny tiny size 6's. Grin

I bet their children are tall too, and sporty, and academic, and are being lined up to go to Cambridge and Oxford. Probably live off massive salads and quinoa. 😂

Methinks there's a little bit of exaggeration of height, going on on this thread. Grin

My brother is 6 ft and 1 inch tall, and almost everyone he stands next to is shorter than him. Women AND men. Of all ages. From their late teens to their 90s.

A few men are almost the same height as him, but most of them are 3 to 6 inches shorter. No way are so many of these posters husbands 6 ft 5, and 6 ft 6 inches tall (and even taller!) like they are claiming on this thread. Grin

As I said, the parallel world of mumsnet strikes again!

BashfulClam · 07/04/2023 21:27

Friends husband is 6’8” he has a Skoda and it works for him.

Ok well I know someone 6’8”, tallest man I’ve ever met and my brother is 6’4” but I’ll tell them they are taking crap because you said so 🙄

DannyZukosSmile · 07/04/2023 21:34

😂😂😂 Oh that's too funny

NOW we have a claim of 6 ft 8 inches tall. Anyone wanna try and better this?!

My husband is 6’4 DS2 is 6’5 and DS1 is 6’3.

It’s a thread asking for recommendations specifically for tall men, so obviously people with tall husbands/partners/sons are going to answer.

Quisquam · 07/04/2023 21:46

In real life, hardly any men are that tall.

DH is 6’4” and DS is 6’5”. DDs are both taller than me. Imo, all the DC have inherited tallness from DH! Two of DH’s ex partners were just as tall, and so is his current partner.

Both DH and DS have no problems with Skodas - Yetis, Octavias or a Karoq. We had two Citroen Picassos, before the Skodas, and DH found them fine for driving - his big problem is on some cars, the roof comes down in front of his eyes; and he can’t look through the windscreen, without bending his neck!

BashfulClam · 07/04/2023 21:50

@DannyZukosSmile yrs 6’8”. My friend has been with him for 20 years so I think she knows what height he is. He had to wear a kilt for a wedding as he was in the wedding party, it was like a short skirt. Just because you seem to live with a myriad of short arses don’t think your experience is the only one.

Agree! Men that tall really stand out as it is unusual. Well unless standing next to a bunch of NBA players!

The average height of men in the UK is 5'9" and most are likely to be closer to that then they are to 6'5".

My first husband was 5'6" and he didn't seem all that much shorter when standing with a group of other men.

My 2nd husband was 6'1 or 6'2" the skinny bean pole type and he towered over most other men.

Likely they added a couple of inches in their youth and stuck with that. My mother used to insist she was 5'5" and maybe she was in her youth but she certainly wasn't in later years as I'm 5'4" and she seemed about 2 inches shorter than me.

Something for mumsnet to do this weekend is have their husband stand against the wall and measure their height.

Report back with their real heightGrin

You need to get out more, sister. A whole world beyond middle earth.

Wow, such a massiveamount ofVERRRRYTALL husbands on here. 6 ft 4, and 6 ft 5, and 6 ft 6... and even taller.......

Correct. DH is 6ft 5 (6ft 4 and 3/4 to be precise.) It's really not that unheard of to be 6ft 3 and up.

In real life, hardly any men are that tall. The parallel universe of mumsnet strikes again.

I mean, my dad, both my uncles, and at least 5 of my male friends are above 6ft 3. I'm sorry you apparently live in Middle Earth.

Bet all of these VERY tall husbands are on £160K a year too

Yes. A touch more. Again, sorry if this seems so beyond imagination that it's comical to you. If it makes you feel better, I'm spectacularly unemployed.

and have a 'long commute,'

Nope. But drives a lot for a hobby.

and the wives of the VERY TALL husbands (posting on this thread,) are teeny tiny size 6's.

Size 8 actually, was a 6, but had DTwins. And I'm quite tall myself, so definitely not teeny tiny in that respect.

I bet their children are tall too,

Well, yes, that's what happens generally with two tall parents.

and sporty,

Fuck no. All kinds of no.

and academic, and are being lined up to go to Cambridge and Oxford.

Not in the slightest. Although DF went to Cambridge.

Probably live off massive salads and quinoa.

Roast lamb dinner for 8 of us today. Just had some Doritos in bed.

Methinks there's a little bit of exaggeration of height, going on on this thread.

Methinks not everyone is on £32k, 5ft 9, a size 14, and has 2.4 children.

My brother is 6 ft and 1 inch tall, and almost everyone he stands next to is shorter than him. Women AND men. Of all ages. From their late teens to their 90s.

Good work. (Slinks off muttering about those filthy Bagginses)

This!

My husband Nissan cube has very very comfy seats. It is practically a sofa on wheels, they are velour and nice and squishy. You'd probably need a Cubic though (7 seater version). A relative in the Police force has been in their Ford Galaxies a lot and says they are very comfy.

IShouldGoToSleep · 07/04/2023 22:50

I'm still a wee bit confused what you are asking for! But just to reiterate, the Citroen Berlingo has v comfy seats, loads of head room, and room for all the family/dogs/bags/etc.. personally think it's a great and super comfy vehicle!

Rollinghill · 07/04/2023 22:52

You can get a "backfriend" insert to go on car seats, might that help?

Pixiedust1234 · 07/04/2023 22:53

The average height of men in the UK is 5'9" and most are likely to be closer to that then they are to 6'5".

Since I'm 5ft 8 any man who is average height would be small next to me once I put on shoes. Even "flats" aren't actually flat. DD2 is taller than me but thats maybe because both sets of grandfathers were also over 6ft. Tall women usually (although not always) gravitate to tall men and usually their offspring are taller than average too. I suggest you open your eyes and look skywards, you might just see faces up there waves downwards

Anyway, back to the main reason for OPs thread - has DP tried going out for a short drive today with a cushion or rolled up towel in the small of his back?

ChubbyChinook · 07/04/2023 22:55

Jaguar XF sportbrake (basically a jaguar estate) soooo comfy. The seats are like nothing I've driven before. So sad to have sold it now.
