How often do you clean your phone? Do you take it with you to the bathroom?

Just wondering really. Long before covid was a thing I would clean my phone, just with a baby wipe, on the days I worked with children as the work was very messy with paints and crafts etc plus lots of kids coughing or sneezing or wanting to hold my hand, and then I'd need to check my phone every now and then. So it felt like it needed a clean.

Over the pandemic I got into the habit of wiping it down every time I got home. I do not think I will get covid from my phone btw, this was early on when things were unclear about fomites, but the habit has stuck.

Having to hold the rail on packed public transport I use frequently, that countless other hands have held, and not everyone is good with handwashing - my phone feels grubby.

I also never bring phone into the bathroom as don't like the idea of that at all. I'd like to be able to listen to music in the bath but seeing as we don't even have a bath in our current flat I'm not missing out! And will maybe get a speaker or something to play music from whenever I finally get the bath of my dreams.

What does everyone else do for phone hygiene?

I immerse mine in a bucket of bleach every 5 minutes, then a wet wipe, then I nuke it with high-power x-rays to kill off anything that remains. When not in use I put it in a vacuum so nothing can get to it.

Therapistmothermaid · 07/04/2023 08:22

I'm a compulsive hand washer, and also antibac wipe my screen most days, about once a week I take the case off and give everything a more thorough clean. I do take my phone to the loo though 🙈

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/04/2023 08:35

I will give mine a wipe with my glasses cleaning cloth occasionally, but that's to get rid of grease rather than germs. Germs aren't something I particularly worry about as I'm hardly ever ill (still haven't had COVID I don't think, and I've never had any sort of D&V bug).

AnotherVice · 07/04/2023 08:43

I have to use my phone for work in patients houses. It gets Clinell wiped A LOT!

Cornettoninja · 07/04/2023 09:46

I clean mine periodically when the light catches it and I see how grubby it is. Every now and then I’ll try and implement a proper routine (because it touches my face on a regular basis) and then abandon it because…. Well, it’s just who I am!

traditional land line phones are grim, I only see them in offices really now but the speaker end smells disgusting without a regular wipe after a while and I used to work with a bloke who regularly had to pick his ear wax out of the earpiece.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/04/2023 09:57

I'm from them generation that lived most of our lives without mobile phones.
We all shared one phone in the house, which never got cleaned, even when visitors used it.
We all used public phone boxes too, which never got cleaned.
Also phones on desks at work - never got cleaned.
Yet we're still alive! 😮

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 10:15

I need to clean my glasses first in order to see whether my phone is dirty!

If you don't take your phone into the bathroom what do you do while having a poo? Read the shampoo bottles? How retro.

I just poop and go...

there are studies that suggest people who read/watch in there are more prone to piles...
and anecdotally, amongst my colleagues that appears to be true.

FelicityFlops · 08/04/2023 21:40

When it is dirty.
Do you mean take it to the loo? At home, definitely not, why would I. If I am out and about it will be in my bag, so, obviously, comes with me if I need to use the facilities.

Devoutspoken · 08/04/2023 21:41

Taking phone to toilet is gross

Taking phone to toilet is gross

Why?

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 08/04/2023 21:44

I do take my phone to the loo as that’s often the only chance I get in a day to do a Duolingo lesson.

I Dettol wipe it frequently. (But then I Dettol wipe most things that I come into contact with.)

Suzi888 · 08/04/2023 21:46

Don’t take it to the bathroom or toilet. Wipe once a day with anti bac wipe.

Skyrim40 · 08/04/2023 21:49

I get some hand sanitiser and a washed/cleaned microfibre cloth and wipe it down. I've always hated fingerprints and marks on any electronic equipment I've had. I do it to my Xbox controller and my tablet too.

Skyrim40 · 08/04/2023 21:51

Doesn't mean they weren't filthy and unpleasant to be around

Skyrim40 · 08/04/2023 21:52

The public phones and such like that is

sanityisamyth · 08/04/2023 21:52

Nothing. The amount of times I've dropped it in the mud and other brown sticky substances at the stables and just wiped it on my trousers. Not dead yet!

Sailingaround · 08/04/2023 21:55

Occasionally take my phone into the bathroom.

Clean my phone usually every day, the days I don’t are when I’ve stayed in the entire day as I WFH. Otherwise I give it a clean when I come back in from somewhere , even if I’ve only popped into the gym.

When I lived in London it was mostly pre-covid times and ashamed to say I didn’t clean my phone! Which now looking back i see that is gross due to how dirty the tube is AND I used to work in schools. Since the pandemic started I got into the habit and wondered why I hadn’t done so before.

MyMachineAndMe · 08/04/2023 21:57

I wipe it with my sleeve every now and again and once a flood I will clean it with that a.f. spray, mainly so that I can see the screen behind the finger prints.

JudgeRudy · 08/04/2023 22:02

I don't routinely clean/wipe my phone but I might if I can see a visible smear.
I don't keep my glasses clean either. I'm at the stage where I put them on only for specific things. Most the time they're on my head. They're quite dirty.
I do take it in the bathroom. I listen to stuff in the bath and sometimes hold a conversation. If I'm on a long call (chatting) I'll go for a wee mid way and continue convo. I've never pood and talked but I have pood and texted or sent an email, usually when I'm rushed.

SallySailor · 08/04/2023 22:04

I clean it with a disinfectant screen wipe at least once a day. Did this long before covid. It's the item I touch the most after touching handrails, shopping trolleys, public toilet door handles and all sorts of yuck (and it gets food and makeup all over it too) - so why wouldn't I

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 08/04/2023 22:13

Once a day with surface cleanser on kitchen roll.

Namechanger355 · 08/04/2023 22:22

I’m always attached to my phone and use it on the loo

ive only recently started cleaning it with a dettol wipe because I realised I hadn’t cleaned it in ages and touch everything, then touch my phone, keep my phone on the floor here there and everywhere, then put my phone against my face

and I use gel a lot but never before I touch my phone which renders the whole usage of gel pointless doesn’t it

Namechanger355 · 08/04/2023 22:24

And for the pp who said viruses don’t pass from animals to phones to humans - yep probably not

but they do pass from surfaces to humans… and my phone is the surface i touch the most

Fansandblankets · 08/04/2023 22:27

No I never clean it except if the screen is dirty. I don’t take it to the bathroom. In fact unless I’m out of the house I don’t touch it. It lives in my handbag or on charge.
