Twelve weeks ago my cousin's daughter was a healthy and happy 10 year old, enjoying a sleepover for her birthday and dancing with her friends way past her bedtime. Then all of a sudden, just after Christmas, her parents noticed strange bruising on her body. They didn't think it was anything serious but took her to her GP who ran her bloods. When the results came back everyone was in shock - they showed that her bone marrow had suddenly stopped working and after various tests she was diagnosed with a very rare and incredibly serious blood condition called aplastic anemia.

She is now in hospital having regular transfusions of red blood cells and platelets which are keeping her alive. In order to be cured she needs a stem cell transplant, and fast.

Her brother sadly isn't a match. Nor is anyone currently on the stem cell donor registry. My beautiful relative is now very poorly in hospital and is reliant on a total stranger to do something amazing and donate some of their stem cells to save her life.

I had no idea, but 90% of stem cell donations are taken from a donor's blood in much the same way as giving blood - it's pretty simple, yet it could save someone's life.

If you are reading this, please could you consider joining the donor stem cell registry. You could be the match that my god daughter needs. A group of her friends have set up a campaign called #swabyourgob and you can sign up to join the registry by ordering your free mouth swab kit from www.dkms.org.uk/swabyourgob

Even if you are not a match for her, you could be for the many people each year who need the kindness of a total stranger to save their lives.

Thank you so much for reading x

I'm already registered, a good friend of mine who daughter was in my DC class had a very similar diagnosis in lockdown, same age as well. Hundreds of us registered back then, anything to help 😞 please register if your able. Far too many children battling these types of blood cancers.

I’ve just signed up.

Parky04 · 02/04/2023 18:16

I've been on the register for 15 years. Never had the call.

Corknut · 02/04/2023 18:24

Lots of love to you, signed up x

Just a mad suggestion. If she has a old baby tooth kept, xan stem cells be replicated using it.

Justgorgeous · 02/04/2023 18:29

I am on the register. Sending all strength and positivity. Xx

I'm not a haematologist but basically her bone marrow doesn't work, she needs a transplant to give her functioning bone marrow from someone's that does. So her own cells are no good.

ladyofshertonabbas · 02/04/2023 18:52

Just applied. Hope you find someone.

slowquickstep · 02/04/2023 18:53

Just registered. Hope your God Daughter is well soon

PlumberProblems · 02/04/2023 19:01

I can't sign up due to a health condition, just commenting to bump, good luck 🙂

MaxJLHardy · 02/04/2023 19:11

I hope she finds a match soon. I joined the register at university and got the call last year after 20 years. I can confirm that stem cell donation doesn't hurt and is a tiny inconvenience given its potential impact.

carly2803 · 02/04/2023 19:22

I hope she recovers soon - i have signed up for a swab and i hope i am a match for someone

saveface · 02/04/2023 19:38

Just signed up. Hope a donor is found for you

Number1number2 · 02/04/2023 19:51

I registered back in uni but think I will re-register now as I doubt the details are up to date.

DP also registered at the same time as me and has been called up since. He got a follow up letter to thank him and to tell him the patient had lived. I'm very proud :)

Rosieted · 03/04/2023 06:16

Thank you so much to everyone who is signing up and for all the hope and positive stories. Will update if a match is found. We are so grateful.

I’m so sorry your going through this, I was on Registers for giving blood stem cells & bone marrow up till 2021 when I was put in hospital due to my platelets dropping to 66 from 88in a day I had to have 4 blood transfusions in a night & the outcome severe anaemia & the coil fitted to stop my period but because my platelets are so unstable Im not allowed to donate anymore, I hope a donor is found

user1472151176 · 03/04/2023 18:16

I think this is a brilliant post and I wish you and your family all the luck in the world. Keep spreading awareness. I have checked but unfortunately I cannot donate as I have pernicious anemia. I hope she manages to get the treatment she needs. So lovely seeing so many people signing up and checking if they're eligible ❤️
