School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

That is bloody awful, op. Those poor kids and teachers. You’re right to be fucking furious. Isn’t Brexit fab?😡

YukoandHiro · 02/04/2023 12:35

Ha ha ha haaa @TomatoFrog! Who - or what - exactly do you think is responsible for the situation in Dover?

Br... Br.... Bre...? Nope. Just can't imagine what it could be.

mellicauli · 02/04/2023 12:35

ATerrorofLeftovers · 02/04/2023 12:18

So a lad from a family that can save for a ski trip over the period of a year deserves to be disappointed, just because his family aren’t on the absolute bread line?

Nice.

Exactly! I really don't think it is entitled to expect to get the holiday you paid for. I don't think it is entitled to expect that publicly funded services like border control to plan for the normal peaks & troughs of the year. I don't think it is entitled to expect our government to work hard to foster good relations with neighbouring countries to help with smooth running of borders.

These are fundamentals which are everything to do with Tory's incompetent running of public service. This was made worse by Brexit, and then worse again still by the Government's insensitive handling of relations with our European neighbours, & then further compounded by the Ukrainian war & inflation.

So shit upon shit upon shit. Most of it emanating from one direction.

Effingmagicfairy · 02/04/2023 12:36

Poor kids - how disappointing!

Ignore the sneery posters.

Ah yes, the glorious 'sunlit uplands' of Brexit.
If only we could have seen all this coming!

Marchintospring · 02/04/2023 12:36

Meh. There have always been delays at Dover way before Brexit. Weather, strikes, road closures. Busy school holidays have always been problematic. It’s unfortunate but it happens. Sad but no travel is 100%. hence why insurance is recommended from booking.

ChaToilLeam · 02/04/2023 12:38

Feel so sorry for all those disappointed school kids. And for their families, many of whom will have saved hard to give their kids the chance of such a trip.

Brexit voters - this is on YOU. Look at what you have done. What a shitshow, it never stops, no wonder everyone in Europe feels sorry for us.

Rockbird · 02/04/2023 12:38

My daughter's year are on a ski trip this week (they went on Fri). She isn't going because there's no way in hell we could afford it no matter how many years we were given to save up. I still have huge sympathy with a coach load of exhausted, disappointed teenagers, teachers and driver, because I'm not a total arsehole unlike some on this thread.

Those poor kids OP. I hope you can get your money back and manage to salvage the Easter hols with him.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/04/2023 12:38

I'm not sure how they could underestimate the number of coaches seeing as they had to pre-book and the weather wasn't that bad if there were ferries coming into Dover from France

I thought the same, @WhatTheHeckyPeck. Also it's said that the French are getting everyone off the coaches on this side to check passports, which would obviously add to the delays - does anyone who's been there know if this is true?

Thesharkradar · 02/04/2023 12:38

They could have campaigned effectively and torn apart all those pro Brexit lies.
If they were stuck with it, they could have implemented it much, much better, including putting in place sensible border check arrangements

But that would be difficult and complex☹️👎
and it would take them away from their other lucrative jobs☹️👎
it's way easier to pull the wool over our eyes and milk it for their own benefit🤩👍

Besides they can hardly see the queues from the windows of their private jets 👋🥳

WestwardHo1 · 02/04/2023 12:38

Maireas · 02/04/2023 12:31

I do think they could speed up the process at Dover. Somehow.
Many of us used to travel frequently into Europe before the EU. There were never delays like this.

There is much much more foreign travel than there was before we were in the EU.

I don't understand how the number of coaches coming is unpredictable.

But, but, we were told back in 2016 that we would see the benefits immediately and that we shouldn't worry. So how come we are having these queues at the borders, how come so many industries are decimated, how come we're not seeing that much-promised £350 million a year going into the NHS, how come so many basic services are massively understaffed, how come we're losing £40 billion a year in tax revenue?

Come on, it's been almost seven years, surely we should have seen at least some of those "best things" by now?

ChaToilLeam · 02/04/2023 12:38

And you can’t just blame the Tories (though they have much to answer for), Labour were shit on this too.

Theluggage15 · 02/04/2023 12:39

Oh no, poor things, they must be so upset, these school trips are fantastic experiences. And some parents may have their plans spoiled if they had stuff planned for their child being away. So sorry this has happened OP and others in same situation.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 02/04/2023 12:39

@Marchintospring maybe so but we've deliberately made it worse. It doesn't have to be this bad.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 12:40

Walkingtheplank · 02/04/2023 12:20

Well I did.
I appreciate that that upsets your need for a binary argument.

So do you think offering a referendum was a sensible policy on the part of the Tories? Do you think it was well managed? Do you believe they campaigned effectively?

RedEyeBaby · 02/04/2023 12:40

I wonder why the ferry company doesn't put on more staff

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 02/04/2023 12:40

If the only reason given was driver hours I’d be quite annoyed to be honest that they couldn’t have replaced the driver and carried on. They obviously found a driver to bring them home.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/04/2023 12:41

onirgellep · 02/04/2023 12:33

Even Suella Braverman on Sky this am didn't blame 'the French'

In fact 'the French' offered to expand border check facilities in 2022 - and the tories declined

You need to check your 'lines to take'

Really? Seems like madness not to take up that offer!

You've had your arse handed to you so far on this thread and that's your reply. Well done for your reflection and critical thinking.

Littlek0406 · 02/04/2023 12:42

@Walkingtheplank
My daughter has been saving all her pocket money, birthday & Christmas money for 2 years for this trip.

How dare you!

Leftbutcameback · 02/04/2023 12:42

ilovesooty · 02/04/2023 12:13

So how about blaming Cameron for implementing the referendum to appease UKIP?

And not only that but doing an appalling job of the remain campaign and being so complacent about it. When Leave used every trick in the book (clean and dirty) to win

Rosula · 02/04/2023 12:42

jakscrakers · 02/04/2023 12:27

Brexit of course its not, its because the french are on strike if there is only one passport officer at there end of course there are going to be humongous queues

Strange that those queues didn't happen in similar situations before Brexit.

NOTANUM · 02/04/2023 12:43

Half the country voted for Brexit despite the Tory government at the time campaigning to stay. The Labour leader at the time sat on the fence and had no coherent answer, same as Starmer, and the very constituencies that voted to leave have lost the most. It’s a very complicated social situation but personally I think the Daily Mail and Telegraph have a lot to answer for as they whipped up hated and the “bendy banana” nonsense.

My ILs voted to leave even though their in-laws are European. They don’t know any other “foreigners”.

I’m sorry for your son and his friends.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 02/04/2023 12:43

@TomatoFrog You'll see in time, don’t worry.

Can you give us a clue in the meantime?
