School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

What an entitled titled thread.

A ski trip (which most people can't afford) cancelled and its blamed on the Tories.

Could it be this level of being out of touch that caused so many non-Tory voters to vote for Brexit?

For the avoidance of doubt, I voted Remain but I accept that the majority of those who voted wanted to Leave because that's democracy.

what an unkind thing to say - my children had two trips each in their school days and we saved up for about 5 years for each one. These school trips are still the highlights of their childhood memories. Everyone tries to provide the best possible childhood for their children, and trips like this, whatever their price point, are part of that

Theos · 02/04/2023 12:29

In my quite lengthy experience in the sector, for some kids, this is the only chance theyll ever get to go skiing because families can’t afford for them all to go.

I work in this area. Not seeing how it’s the government’s fault that the French didn’t staff their part of the border sufficiently or efficiently or that port control under estimated coach numbers or bad weather caused delays.
Yes Brexit changed the underlying nature of the control at the border but there were always checks on every passport. The main factor here was French inefficiency. UK border control are often under staffed too and queues build up on the other side. Never as bad as this though.

Thanks for the insight, Member589500. I'm the very last to defend this ghastly government when they get it wrong, but among all the angst I find it helpful to try to understand what's actually gone wrong - not least so it can be avoided in future

TeenLifeMum · 02/04/2023 12:29

I’m so gutted for all the children affected. At our school they go in Year 10 so if they miss it would can’t just go another year. These kids have had so much cancelled they really are having to be more resilient than they should need to be.

So how are they going to get these children home if drivers hours is the reason to cancel?

Walkingtheplank · 02/04/2023 12:13

Don't call me a liar because I have the ability to understand the perspective of others.

You are absolutely proving the point I made.

Your "You're wrong, I'm right" message is what people voted against.

But you clearly don't understand the perspective of someone who has gone without for a year to be able to send her son on a much-anticipated trip, partly to make up for the fact that he and his peers have had a shitty few years in school, only for it to be cancelled because of the sheer folly of Brexit and its incompetent implementation. Try some empathy.

OP will you get any money back? If so, plan an amazing lingerie weekend away with your boy to make up for it.

Fuck the Tories. Whoever voted foe this shitshow??!

That's a strange weekend to plan with her 15yr old son pmsl

arethereanyleftatall · 02/04/2023 12:31

Thank you @Abraxan - I hadn't realised people were waved through before, mine has always been checked whether I've been on a coach, in a car, or flying. I must look dodgy!

arethereanyleftatall · 02/04/2023 12:26

Can someone help someone at the back (me). I thought passports were always looked at when one left the country? Pre and post brexit.

As a third party country we have to comply with the 90/180 day rule - so individual passports have to be checked. It takes 3x longer to check pages etc.

Maireas · 02/04/2023 12:31

I do think they could speed up the process at Dover. Somehow.
Many of us used to travel frequently into Europe before the EU. There were never delays like this.

IsThePopeCatholic · 02/04/2023 12:31

Newusernameaug · 02/04/2023 11:58

I agree except it’s not just the tories, I feel their just puppets and even if it was labour the same shit would be happening cos it’s about who the real power is behind the scenes

The ‘real power’ lies with the Tories atm, not some dark forces. Vote them OUT.

Littlek0406 · 02/04/2023 12:32

My daughter is it in the same boat stuck down in Dover, they’ve been there for 19 hours plus it took them 10 hours just to get there Dover!
This all should be an enjoyable skiing trip for them but no! I’m fuming @TheColourofspring

Blueblell · 02/04/2023 12:32

How awful! I feel like they shouldn’t give up after 15 hours but they must have reason to know they won’t get through in time to make the trip work.

I don’t think there is anything entitled about saving all year to send your child on a ski trip.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 02/04/2023 12:32

I can't afford a ski trip and my DC are too young to have had any disruption to their education due to covid, but I can still empathise with how upset OP is. It's got nothing to do with "entitlement". I'd feel badly for anyone in a situation like this, whatever the cause.*

*To be clear, the cause in this case is Brexit, but feel free to disagree for some reason Confused

They were often looked at, briefly (and not always, we have been waved through on many occasions) but this year and last my passport has been examined more thoroughly, and stamped on entry and exit to EU countries, as now we Brits cannot generally stay in the EU more than a certain number of days each year, verified by your passport entry and exit stamps.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 12:33

Jiggery · 02/04/2023 12:16

You seem to forget @TheColourofspring that it was a referendum that caused Brexit. People had a choice.

Also, the reports online say that the port authorities have underestimated the amount of coach traffic by 15% and there have been delays on channel crossings due to the weather.

You seem to forget that we didn't have to have a referendum. Only the Tories were stupid enough to put it in their manifesto because they were scared of losing votes to UKIP.

You also seem to forget we didn't have to leave the Single Market or the Customs Union. Those were totally down to the Tories.

megletthesecond · 02/04/2023 12:33

Our local secondary school took 11hrs to go through on friday night. The teachers had to go out for pizza while waiting. They've made it to Austria but what a miserable start.

An entirely predictable self-inflicted mess. We said brexit would be shit and it is.

Easterfunbun · 02/04/2023 12:33

@Walkingtheplank

Oh behave. Plenty of people scrimp and save for a school ski trip because they as a family know they’ll never be able to afford for that child to go otherwise. Our son went on Feb, lots of sacrifices for that financially but very much worth it.

I feel for those kids now making their way back, there would have been an incredible build up and huge amount of excitement. I would have been devastated as would my son.

Even Suella Braverman on Sky this am didn't blame 'the French'

In fact 'the French' offered to expand border check facilities in 2022 - and the tories declined

You need to check your 'lines to take'

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 02/04/2023 12:34

Before Brexit you were waved through. Now there is border control. This is entirely the fault of the tories and Brexit.

This. Also I'm not sure how they could underestimate the number of coaches seeing as they had to pre-book and the weather wasn't that bad if there were ferries coming into Dover from France.
