School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

No, we'd have just carried on with the shitshow of uncontrolled immigration that caused half the Nation to demand Brexit in the first place 🙄 The Tories may have some serious questions to answer but that little issue is Blair's and Brown's alone.

I've got a son (not the one with the fractured foot as per my post fortunately 🤣 ) on a ski trip right now OP so solidarity, he must be devastated, but our lot flew as we're in the North. The country is absolutely going to Hell in a handcart currently.

Since Brexit this government has been really successful in managing immigration. Oh, hang on... 🙄

Hi Suella 👋🏻 Bit of a shocker on the telly this morning, wasn't it

That is the will of the people.

They voted for Brexit to take back control of our borders.
This is a good example of how our borders have been taken back control of, and frankly I think the French should check everyone crossing our borders really slowly more of the time.

Surley that should say check them even slower 😂

They only have 2 modes: slow and dead slow 😂

My ndn's boy went with the school, it took all his Christmas money, birthday money, top ups from grandmother's, working in holiday time. He had a wonderful time, sadly covid prevented his brother from the same trip. He's spent the winter skiing and is back working this summer for another winter's skiing and working abroad. So not everyone is rich.

I would expect the school to have arranged travel insurance for them, but don't know if it covered these circumstances. I'm surprised there aren't 2 drivers so one could sleep as there was when we went to Meribel.

As I'm a dual national I can get an Irish passport but it wouldn't prevent the delay on a coach trip. Who are those 37% of the electorate who voted to leave the EU without any terms in place?

Inastatus · 02/04/2023 14:22

Your poor son, what a huge disappointment. I hope you get your money back.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 02/04/2023 14:23

PinkSyCo · 02/04/2023 14:02

And what about the kids who could never dream of going on a family holiday costing £1500, let alone having that much spent on them alone?

What about them?

That’s a whole different thread, not this one.

Whataboutery never helps.

For what it’s worth, if you were to start a thread about child poverty I’d be on it and very much in favour of measures to combat it. It’s a scourge on our society. But don’t make it a race to the bottom. We can have empathy for OP’s son and others AND also care about other things. No reason I’m earth to view it as an either/or.

Surely no one still believes that Brexit was ever going to reduce immigration?

When one coach of schoolchildren have been waiting 16 hours (true) what do you suggest they do?

Factor in 24 hours sat on a coach?!

They should factor in the possibilities of delays before booking or go at a different time.

By the time they have set off it's already too late,

Maybe TheSnootiestFox stopped following the news the second Brexit happened? Not sure what else could account for ignorance of the level of immigration that’s still going on now….

Since the public wanted and was given the vote, surly part of it all is due to the public's wishes?

Did they? 63.1% did not vote Conservative in the 2015 election.

LeggyLinda · 02/04/2023 14:25

As much as I’d love to blame the Tories for everything, this is the fault of brexit voters.
Yes, the conservatives have handled brexit poorly, but there isn’t a plus point or good way of leaving EU.

Motherofacertainage · 02/04/2023 14:26

Who wants to join me in a small wager that this is one story that WON'T get picked up by the Daily Fail? Unless they try to spin it to somehow be the fault of snowflake teachers who didn't have the resilience to wait on a coach for a week with no sleep and 50 kids

So the fact it's school holidays is irrelevant? If they can't go in school hols, they can't go at all.

There will be reasons they went when they did, and expecting kids to stay on a coach for 16 hours plus, is ridiculous.

Starmer has no personality or stamina. I'm a long term Labour supporter but I have no faith in him sadly.

People who have worked with Starmer testify to the fact that he has plenty of stamina. As for personality, we've had far, far too much of personality politics. Give me boring every day.

It already is in the daily mail and they are suggesting from the article I read it seems the delays are with France

I work in this area. Not seeing how it’s the government’s fault that the French didn’t staff their part of the border sufficiently or efficiently or that port control under estimated coach numbers or bad weather caused delays.
Yes Brexit changed the underlying nature of the control at the border but there were always checks on every passport. The main factor here was French inefficiency. UK border control are often under staffed too and queues build up on the other side. Never as bad as this though.

Exactly. The situation at Dover is a disgrace. Whether we agree or not, Brexit was voted for, and we have to deal with the situation we are in. There’s no point in stamping our feet saying that a vote which happened 7 years ago wasn’t fair. We have to look forward.

Dover Port authorities and French border control know what passport checks have to be made. They know how many passengers they are expecting. To have 1 or 2 border control staff processing that number of coach passengers is ludicrous. Whoever made the decision to have such low staffing numbers has questions to answer.

Why is the situation so much worse at the ferry terminals? The Eurotunnel and Eurostar terminals seem to be managing, as do the vast majority of EU airports. I’ve travelled a lot since the passport checks have been increased and have never come across such inefficiency as the border control at Dover. We cannot just blame Brexit for this. Yes, there are more checks, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out that 1 or 2 members of staff at border control was never going to be enough.

I speak as someone whose child has been caught up in the Dover debacle.

No but it was a public reaction to what had happened previously. Surely everyone understands that?

Tomorrow the headlines will be "The Frogs ruined our Easter"
Or similar

This is what Brexit is ...no free movement. All passports need to be stamped . It is solely down to the Tories insisting on a referendum all those years ago, to save their off shore taxes being investigated by the EU and Brussels. Selfish self serving wankers

Starmer is still pro Brexit now, it's unbelievable!
