School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

And what about the kids who could never dream of going on a family holiday costing £1500, let alone having that much spent on them alone?

I don't think those children are being helped by border control chaos?

Labour wanted Brexit done!

Hilarious how now it's no longer a Conservative "win" - Brexiteers need to share the blame around.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 14:10

Florenz · 02/04/2023 12:56

The Tories didn't vote for Brexit, David Cameron allowed the referendum assuming that Remain would win. The people voted for Brexit.

So Cameron was stupid, wasn't he, both for allowing the referendum, and for failing to campaign adequately. Johnson was worse, for promoting all those lies about it that misled people into voting for it. Last time I looked, both were and are Tories.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 02/04/2023 14:10

@PinkSyCo my kids will never have that spent on them but I'm still able to empathise with OP. It's not hard to do.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/04/2023 14:10

Can we be friends @Menopants ?

TheSnootiestFox · 02/04/2023 14:11

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/04/2023 12:01

How do you work that one out? The Labour Party would never have held the referendum in the first place, so we wouldn't have been stuck with the shitshow that is Brexit.

No, we'd have just carried on with the shitshow of uncontrolled immigration that caused half the Nation to demand Brexit in the first place 🙄 The Tories may have some serious questions to answer but that little issue is Blair's and Brown's alone.

I've got a son (not the one with the fractured foot as per my post fortunately 🤣 ) on a ski trip right now OP so solidarity, he must be devastated, but our lot flew as we're in the North. The country is absolutely going to Hell in a handcart currently.

A voice of reason at last 🙂

What are you getting at here? In the school's fault?
Or no one should travel at busy times any more?
School's have to schedule trips like this in holiday times, would your idea be then that these trips shouldn't happen?

Luckydip1 · 02/04/2023 14:11

As both Labour and Tories wanted Brexit, you have to blame the people who voted at the referendum, it's because of them that this country is poorer and will continue to struggle economically until the dumb decision is reversed.

myoldmansatrendydustman · 02/04/2023 14:11

mellicauli · 02/04/2023 13:10

What fact is incorrect?

That it's the government's fault - that's incorrect.

Roussette · 02/04/2023 14:11

Rosula · 02/04/2023 14:07

If that is happening, and if the French are doing it to annoy us because of Brexit, it still goes back to Brexit, doesn't it? You can't piss off your allies and then act surprised that they respond in kind.

It isn't the French fault!

Passports now have to be stamped when you leave and when you return. They will not be walking up and down the coach glancing at passports like they used to.

You will queue at a desk to get your passport stamped.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 14:11

User639762456 · 02/04/2023 12:58

I'm sure some Labour supporters also voted for Brexit

And? Who gave them the opportunity to do so? Who has been responsible for implementing it?

And none of us voted for leaving the Single Market and Customs Union, because we weren't asked.

KnottyKnitting · 02/04/2023 14:12

Yes the government's fault for putting forward the referendum and the ignorant, xenophobic twats who voted to leave. If you voted for BREXIT you have no one to blame but yourselves. This is not to do with the French or the weather- it is what the majority voted for. How's that going for you all eh?

Celeriacsoup · 02/04/2023 14:12

There are loads of dc from state schools who only get to go abroad by virtue of a school trip.

And can you explain to me PinkSyCo how exactly “taking back control” of our borders has helped Britain in any way at all? Because it hasn’t really helped with the refugee crisis has it? So how else has it helped?

Luckydip1 · 02/04/2023 14:12

Don't forget, the Tory PM urged everyone to vote against leaving Europe for the referendum.

Sounds like it!

New laws coming in that we can't travel over Bank holidays, Easter or Christmas because it will be too busy and the country can't cope lol

I never said that at all and please don't put words in my mouth.

Easter, like Christmas, is one of the busiest times for travel and this should be factored in when booking a trip anywhere.

DuncinToffee · 02/04/2023 14:06

Conservatives got Brexit done!!!!

Only because just over half the population had given them the mandate to do it. If you recall, Cameron resigned over it, but they still had to do it because that's how the referendum went. You know, democracy and all that.....

Leftbutcameback · 02/04/2023 14:15

My friend’s son was caught up in the delays too. Eventually made it through but they were stuck there overnight. School skiing trips (and other groups like scouts) are a great opportunity for kids to try something new and exciting that they wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. My family didn’t ski and would never have contemplated it, so the school trip was my opportunity. It’s the same for my friend’s son, who like many others missed out on the usual school trips due to Covid. I feel so sorry for all those who had their trips cancelled.

When I was at school my gran gave me my inheritance early (not a huge amount) specifically so I could afford school trips. Got to see lots of new places and was incredibly grateful for that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/04/2023 14:15

France offered UK the option to spend £20m a year to pay for extra Passport booths at all locations in France. UK didn't take up the offer

I agree that on the face of it that may have been a mistake; however before handing over more it may be worth considering what the £232 million spent over 10 years on the provision at Calais actually went on (and that doesn't even cover all of what was spent): https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9681/#:~:text=How%20much%20has%20the%20UK,three%20years%20(Joint%20Ministerial%20Declaration)

I absolutely realise the UK's in no position to talk about the inappropriate spending of others, but I'd still like to know because there's no point in giving yet more if it's not going to be effective

When one coach of schoolchildren have been waiting 16 hours (true) what do you suggest they do?

Factor in 24 hours sat on a coach?!

Celeriacsoup · 02/04/2023 14:02

Please tell me your post is ironic jgw1

😳🤔

Surely you have seen the news about the French allowing all manner of migrants to get into boats and cross the Channel? Its a disgrace.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 02/04/2023 14:17

Rosula · 02/04/2023 13:56

But we didn't have to have the vote at all. It only took place because Cameron was desperate not to lose votes to UKIP.

It's pretty standard, when you have. referendum to bring about a major change to the status quo, to require a larger than 50% vote, and/or to have a second vote. The Tories were too stupid and/or complacent to do that, or to campaign effectively. It should have been child's play for any competent government to demonstrate the downside of Brexit and debunk the lies the Leavers were telling.

Absolutely the Mail and Telegraph have a lot to answer for, but none of this would have happened but for Cameron's and Johnson's stupidity and venality.

Exactly.

As John Redwood has said this morning. Brits should holiday in the UK, helping to pick turnips like in the good old days.

I live near doer and I'm pretty sure it has nothing whatsoever to do with the tories!! The wind here is ducking awful and has been like this for at least a week.. the boats simply are not safe to sail. 🤷🏼‍♀️ what the heck has that got to do with politics

The wind was never this bad before Brexit.

Because of Brexit, gales will now be the norm. I blame The Tories.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 14:19

Catuscatish · 02/04/2023 13:16

Blame the people who voted for Brexit. There now seems to be this pervasive idea that people simply had no idea what they were voting for. They were lied to, they couldn't have known .

Except it's rubbish. There were many many voices beforehand warning of the dire consequences including issues caused by restricted freedom of movement . They were dismissed as project fear. No doubt you'll find old threads on here if you look.

The people that voted for this shitshow are the people to blame for the mess we are in. They each bear their own degree of personal responsibility. They each used their own tiny bit of power to give us what we have now.

Blame the Conservatives if you will, but they only implemented the will of the people.

That's democracy.

So the Conservatives had no responsibility whatsoever for setting up the referendum in the first place, then? Or for failing to campaign effectively and to debunk all the Leavers' lies? And they're not responsible for opting for the Hard Border option, or for failing to take up the French's offer of doubled passport checking facilities?
