School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

"this is all on the French" - err, did the French vote for a hard Brexit? Did the French insist they were "taking back control" of their borders? Did the French turn down the offer to double the capacity of French border controls in Dover? Sweeping generalisations sound great in your head but don't stand up to scrutiny. Facts and logic help, however easy and satisfying it is to blame someone else (preferably foreigners, as is the current Tory way)

But it is the French's fault. Why do they think they need to do this checks on perfectly law abiding British holiday makers. Don't they know they are British?

On the subject of the French. Why don't they spend their energy on stopping migrants crossing the Channel to get to the UK instead?

Drfosters · 02/04/2023 13:59

we are genuinely curious as to what the issue was. We went on Eurostar a few weeks ago and the checks took exactly the same amount of time as they did before. Took less than a minute at both the Uk and French side for 4 people. The extra stamp time took about 1 second.

Yabu. Brexit was the result of shit policies started by Tony Blair, so this can't be blamed on the Tories imo.

There's delusional, then there's this.

FFs.

What are you ON about?! Honestly you just sound mad when stuff like this is spouted. It had nothing to do with TB and everything to do with the Tories. My god 😂

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 11:37

@TomatoFrog bollocks. It lies entirely at the tories feet - Brexit it an unmitigated disaster. It was the tories that insisted that every passport had to be stamped.

That would be the French ‘Tories’ then?

I suppose the Tories are also to ‘blame’ for the storms and flooding which have caused delays? Yeah, evil bastards , them and their rain dances.

What a shame. It’s an inevitable consequence of Brexit though.

What makes you think he must be rich?! OP CLEARLY said it's taken a year to save up for this trip.

Bloody ridiculous comment.

Even if they do have money, it's still bloody upsetting for the kids!

And what about the kids who could never dream of going on a family holiday costing £1500, let alone having that much spent on them alone?

I think the country is in for bigger disappointments if it thinks a change of government will make everything right

Clearly it can't be remedied overnight, the Tories have messed things up too comprehensively for that.

We're you one of those Race to the Bottom people who voted Leave as a poke in the eye to people who could afford to go abroad sometimes the metropolitan elite?

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 02/04/2023 14:04

It's disgusting. We were lied to about Brexit and then lied to about what it would mean at our borders.

Feuillemille23 · 02/04/2023 13:55

I am so sorry that has happened to your lad, and yes, the Tories, Farage (who I still reckon was bankrolled by Putin and the truth will come out at some point), that parody puppet Rees Mogg, the ERG, Cameron, Tim Martin and the rest of them, not to mention every brainwashed twat who voted Leave are responsible for this situation and so much more. I just hope you can all get at least some of your money back and that your boy and all the others stranded get the chance to go overseas again and see that there is a world beyond blighted Blighty...

I work near the TV channel headquarters that Farage either works for or frequents - the other month I saw him crossing the street. A truly horrible person who has helped do immense amounts of damage to this country - just crossing the street in his expensive suit and with an arrogant expression on his face 😡.

OP I am really sorry that your son has missed his ski trip 😔. I hope the school manage to organise it again next year?

jgw1 · 02/04/2023 14:05

Rhondaa · 02/04/2023 13:40

God, it happens every year at Easter and we'll see it again in the Summer hols.

I've no idea why A. anyone would use Dover at peak times and B. Why more staff aren't put on to manage the surge. Do the French not understand numbers go up in the school hols. I'll answer my own question - yes, yes they do. Do they give a rat's ass? Nope.

Talking of things that are utterly inexplicable.
@Janiie why is it that in some workplaces alcohol was deemed essential for work? Do you think it was perhaps to numb the realisation of what a mess Brexit is?

Luckydip1 · 02/04/2023 14:05

So you want to blame the logistics of loading passenger/freight ferries on Brexit?

You may want to re-think that.

You absolutely can bloody well blame this on the government. Whatever you believe the cause to be, it's their actual job to sort this stuff out.

This brought a lump to my throat. Poor kids, but also imagine being the staff who had to make the decision.

Particularly for large coaches/vehicles, etc. a simpler system used to happen prior to Brexit and border control changes.

We drove through France on a regular basis for 10 years a prior to Brexit. Passport Control always went onto coaches checking passports.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 14:07

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/04/2023 12:50

There were much more efficient arrangements for checking before Brexit, including specific arrangements for coach parties

I know, @Rosula, and that's why I asked if it was true about the French now insisting that people leave their coaches for the checks

I'm assuming nothing, but if correct that would be an odd thing to do and create questions around the motivation

If that is happening, and if the French are doing it to annoy us because of Brexit, it still goes back to Brexit, doesn't it? You can't piss off your allies and then act surprised that they respond in kind.

Luckydip1 · 02/04/2023 14:07

@PinkSyCo

"And what about the kids who could never dream of going on a family holiday costing £1500, let alone having that much spent on them alone?"

So are you saying that no one should go on trips etc. or complain about the problems because there are others who can't afford to? How ridiculous!

Sortyourlifeout · 02/04/2023 14:09

PinkSyCo · 02/04/2023 14:02

And what about the kids who could never dream of going on a family holiday costing £1500, let alone having that much spent on them alone?

That's the most ridiculous arguement and miles away from the point of this thread.

When I was at school, we had a choir trip to Malta. It was expensive. Most parents had to scrimp and save. There were burseries for those who really couldn't afford it, so that nobody missed out.

You're BU.
