School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

God, it happens every year at Easter and we'll see it again in the Summer hols.

I've no idea why A. anyone would use Dover at peak times and B. Why more staff aren't put on to manage the surge. Do the French not understand numbers go up in the school hols. I'll answer my own question - yes, yes they do. Do they give a rat's ass? Nope.

If people didn't use Do er "at peak times" there wouldn't be "peak times"

Oh - except there would. The peak time would become the time everyone decides to travel instead.

Everywhere has peak and off peak. Prices and staffing are arranged accordingly.

This government refused to create extra facilities to cope with peak times. Then made it illegal to travel with children out of school holidays.

Poor little rich boy? Because one person in a family was going on a holiday costing £1500 it took over a year to save for?

Are you ok?

What a vile thing to say. What is the matter with you?

The OP said she had been saving all year for this trip for him.

But we were supposed to be ‘taking back control’. As soon as you blame the French for impeding our ability to leave the U.K., you demonstrate how empty that claim was.

That is a very true comment. Another claim built on a base of sand. Had we truly taken back control, fixing the issues at Dover would have been factored in.

It really is a Brexit, hard border issue.

That is the will of the people.

They voted for Brexit to take back control of our borders.
This is a good example of how our borders have been taken back control of, and frankly I think the French should check everyone crossing our borders really slowly more of the time.

I can understand the frustration as I hate delays and queues, but there are have been issues with this pre-Brexit.

Here's just a few reports:

Yes, the amount of traffic going to Dover at peak times such as Easter is known for causing severe traffic congestion across Kent.

It's so bad that it even has a name - Operation Stack. This was first implemented to manage the traffic flow in February 1988....turns the M20 into a lorry park, really.

Dover is more like* *a bottleneck and well known for it!

Guess how time I have for Tory apologists?

That's right! Absolutely fucking none! Not one single fucking iota of time or patience for anyone propping up or mindlessly trying to excuse this fucking incompetent, vicious, atrocious fucking government.

It IS the fucking government's fault. It IS the fault of Tories. It IS the fault of fucking fucking Brexit. Anything else is utter bullshit.

I am NO mood.

What makes you think he must be rich?! OP CLEARLY said it's taken a year to save up for this trip.

Bloody ridiculous comment.

Even if they do have money, it's still bloody upsetting for the kids!

Whilst I somewhat agree that Brexit has paid a part in this utter shambles, in the 80’s for my school trips to France, I travelled on a paper ‘ temporary’ passport, and we had none of this chaos. I acknowledge the number of travellers has increased since the then , but so has technology, so there must be a system that can be utilised to speed up this process.

Eh? We were all members of the EU in the 1980s! That’s why such things were possible.

Casilero · 02/04/2023 13:49

Pictures sooty, pictures. It'll give the kids something to look at when they're not going skiing won't it?

On the flip side would the French give Britian 20mil

backinthebox · 02/04/2023 13:54

As someone who has had various things completely fucked over by Brexit, I loathe it with a passion. However, I do not think you can lay this one solely at the door of a single political party. Every person who voted for Brexit should hang their head in shame over the sorry situation we are in now. And queueing up behind them should be all those who were against Brexit but who did not vote because they didn’t think it would matter. The Conservative Party gave bigots, racists and idiots an opportunity to put their feelings forward, and as a country we stepped up and voted for it.

17.5 million British people voted in favour of Brexit.

13 million British people could not be arsed to vote in the referendum.

It’s a bigger issue than one party - chances are that unless you are living in some weird bubble you know plenty of people who did not vote to remain in the E.U. They cannot claim that they did not know the facts or that they were mislead - the facts were sketchy but there, and the glaring gaps in planned policy going forward were warning signs that Brexit was going to be a complete car crash that would disadvantage the U.K. for decades. Groups such as Led By Donkeys tried to out across as much information as they could. Much as it pains me to say it, the entire electorate has a hand in where we are now. Clueless twits like Dominic Raab who did not understand the importance of Dover are not just Tory politicians - this level of ignorance extends all the way through our society. And we are all worse off because of it.

Feuillemille23 · 02/04/2023 13:55

I am so sorry that has happened to your lad, and yes, the Tories, Farage (who I still reckon was bankrolled by Putin and the truth will come out at some point), that parody puppet Rees Mogg, the ERG, Cameron, Tim Martin and the rest of them, not to mention every brainwashed twat who voted Leave are responsible for this situation and so much more. I just hope you can all get at least some of your money back and that your boy and all the others stranded get the chance to go overseas again and see that there is a world beyond blighted Blighty...

I live near doer and I'm pretty sure it has nothing whatsoever to do with the tories!! The wind here is ducking awful and has been like this for at least a week.. the boats simply are not safe to sail. 🤷🏼‍♀️ what the heck has that got to do with politics

The ferries are still sailing, and more are being put on. P&O Twitter say ferries are running normally.

They tweeted this an hour ago
15:50 - On Time
17:20 - On Time
18:50 - On Time
21:05 - On Time

So.... what do you mean?

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 02/04/2023 13:55

@Hawkins003 it's not a donation, it's a price for a product on sale. They've not suggesting a whip round or asking Lenny Henry for some Comic Relief cash.

NOTANUM · 02/04/2023 12:43

Half the country voted for Brexit despite the Tory government at the time campaigning to stay. The Labour leader at the time sat on the fence and had no coherent answer, same as Starmer, and the very constituencies that voted to leave have lost the most. It’s a very complicated social situation but personally I think the Daily Mail and Telegraph have a lot to answer for as they whipped up hated and the “bendy banana” nonsense.

My ILs voted to leave even though their in-laws are European. They don’t know any other “foreigners”.

I’m sorry for your son and his friends.

But we didn't have to have the vote at all. It only took place because Cameron was desperate not to lose votes to UKIP.

It's pretty standard, when you have. referendum to bring about a major change to the status quo, to require a larger than 50% vote, and/or to have a second vote. The Tories were too stupid and/or complacent to do that, or to campaign effectively. It should have been child's play for any competent government to demonstrate the downside of Brexit and debunk the lies the Leavers were telling.

Absolutely the Mail and Telegraph have a lot to answer for, but none of this would have happened but for Cameron's and Johnson's stupidity and venality.

Try again! It was never like it has been the past few years. It's constant.

And the weather in Kent is fine. The source of this is well documented.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/04/2023 13:57

Off topic, I know. I don’t understand why the schools are using coaches if the cost is 1.5k. My dd just flew out with school, 5 days skiing, for almost £200 less than that.

I do hope you recoup your costs op.

ssd · 02/04/2023 13:57

Thats awful

rockingbird · 02/04/2023 13:57

They are now, Thursday and Friday it was reported that no ferries were leaving the port of Dover hence the back log we now have. Today the tides and wind are back up so it's going to have yet another knock on effect. Yes the passport checking is a Lyn added problem but it's been like that for some time.

User135644 · 02/04/2023 13:58

I'm sure they'll have someone else to blame, they always do.

Rosula · 02/04/2023 13:58

Itsbytheby · 02/04/2023 12:45

It's Brexit, not the Tories. Blame the people who voted for Brexit.

So who set up the referendum then?

But the UK were members of the EU then, so we were waved through a lot of the time. As EU members, Britain and France had signed up to reciprocal agreements relating to customs, tax and security issues at a governmental level, which removed the need for more detailed checks on the ground.

Well our Government turned down the opportunity for doubling existing passport facilities

A 2020 report by the Financial Times has also been doing the rounds this weekend. In it, it states the UK government turned down a £33-million (39-million-euro, $40-million) bid for upgrades at the port, including new passport control booths.

www.thelocal.fr/20220722/are-the-french-really-to-blame-for-dover-travel-chaos

I fail to see how doubling existing passport facilities would help.

It doesn't help the ferries get loaded any faster.

That just 'kicks the can down the road' - so instead of getting holdups as tailbacks you get holdups on the dock.

I'll swear that very few people on this thread have even been over/under a toll bridge/tunnel. You could have 20 booths but at the end of the day the traffic still has to funnel through a small area and the vessels need to be loaded safely to maintain "trim".

Extra ferries have been put on to cope with the demand but they still get loaded at the same speed.
