School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

Instead of wasting time on goady, emotive, factually incorrect posts OP why not use your energy to take this up with the trip organisers?

The new passport arrangements didn't come in overnight, so that should have been factored in with the logistics of the trip.

This situation has been ongoing for 3 days so there was ample time to sort out another route eg Hull/Zeebrugge.

What fact is incorrect?

Zanatdy · 02/04/2023 13:11

Oh that’s awful. A friends son went last night but they are still making their way - now in France. I really feel for the poor kids, that’s so unfair

notimagain · 02/04/2023 13:11

myoldmansatrendydustman · 02/04/2023 13:07

Exactly, this is all on the French who are probably too busy rioting in Paris to come to work🙄

Nope, no rioting scheduled this week and PAF (Border) working normally on a national level AFAIK.

Maybe somebody didn't get the traffic (specifically passenger) numbers right but where that happened who knows?

"this is all on the French" - err, did the French vote for a hard Brexit? Did the French insist they were "taking back control" of their borders? Did the French turn down the offer to double the capacity of French border controls in Dover? Sweeping generalisations sound great in your head but don't stand up to scrutiny. Facts and logic help, however easy and satisfying it is to blame someone else (preferably foreigners, as is the current Tory way)

Hbh17 · 02/04/2023 13:12

So the fact that the French are making a mess of things too isn't considered? If we're blaming Governments, there are two in the frame here!

cabbageking · 02/04/2023 13:13

There have always been strikes or action by France that have affected holiday makers. There was a French one-day air traffic control strike last week when flights were stopped due to changes to the French retirement age.

Recall lots of times the French have taken action, stopped travel, restricted animals and even set lorries with animals on fire.

Marchintospring · 02/04/2023 12:36

Meh. There have always been delays at Dover way before Brexit. Weather, strikes, road closures. Busy school holidays have always been problematic. It’s unfortunate but it happens. Sad but no travel is 100%. hence why insurance is recommended from booking.

I don’t mean to derail, but ‘meh’ has become very popular on Mumsnet recently hasn’t it? Do people think it makes them sound cool or original?

JocelynBurnell · 02/04/2023 13:14

Florenz · 02/04/2023 13:02

I do think the school was reckless in scheduling a school trip to sail from Dover on the first weekend of the Easter holidays. It was chaos last year, it's always going to be chaos, it was bad enough even before Brexit.

Fair point.

It's absolutely reckless of anyone to plan anything in Britain while the Tories are in charge.

But at the same time the article in the daily mail does suggest it's the French side that's caused the delay

Of course it is and absolutely nothing to do with all the extra checks needed at border control because "we've taken back control". But think of the joy all those stranded feel at being able to look at their nice blue passports eh.

Runningslow · 02/04/2023 13:14

Op , how about blaming the EU for not listening to DC when he wanted to talk to them about UK concerns? Or the SNP for abstaining when they could have got a softer Brexit through the commons?

It’s a mess of our own making. Why should they spend more of their taxpayers’ money to help us sort it out?

Well our Government turned down the opportunity for doubling existing passport facilities

A 2020 report by the Financial Times has also been doing the rounds this weekend. In it, it states the UK government turned down a £33-million (39-million-euro, $40-million) bid for upgrades at the port, including new passport control booths.

Do you think the outcome would still have been 52/48 % if Boris Johnson hadn’t spotted an opportunity for promotion, decided to vote Leave, and basically used the Brexit campaign to further his own political ambitions?

And Gove.

And all of those self-serving craptoids in the ERG?

And Jeremy Corbyn did no better.

They all betrayed the UK.

Yep. This.

Well it is because of the Tories that Brexit happened, isn't it?

Blame the people who voted for Brexit. There now seems to be this pervasive idea that people simply had no idea what they were voting for. They were lied to, they couldn't have known .

Except it's rubbish. There were many many voices beforehand warning of the dire consequences including issues caused by restricted freedom of movement . They were dismissed as project fear. No doubt you'll find old threads on here if you look.

The people that voted for this shitshow are the people to blame for the mess we are in. They each bear their own degree of personal responsibility. They each used their own tiny bit of power to give us what we have now.

Blame the Conservatives if you will, but they only implemented the will of the people.

That's democracy.

Oh don't! I have just received my new passport. I hate it. I want the maroon one back

Gosh, really? An article in the Daily Mail suggests it’s the fault of the French? It must be true, they couldn’t possibly have any bias or agenda!

daytriptovulcan · 02/04/2023 13:17

Brexit is such an enduring shit show. The Tories should never be forgiven for this dispicable scam.

Roussette · 02/04/2023 13:19

Yep. And shock horror, I know of about 4 people who are now saying they voted Remain. Like hell you did! You told me at the time you voted to leave so don't pull that one!

Celeriacsoup · 02/04/2023 13:19

Why are they under any obligation to make it easier for us though? That’s the whole point. We voted to make it harder for French citizens, and all other EU citizens travelling through France, to come to UK. Why should they now be obliged to make it easier for us when we literally opted to leave the arrangement that facilitated all of this?

Maybe they should make it easier to boost French tourism? Well maybe, but France has plenty of visitors from the rest of the EU to fill our places.

Does no one understand that by voting to leave the EU, we kicked the French and Germans in the metaphorical goolies, and by now demanding they make our passage through their countries more efficient, we are being somewhat hypocritical?
