To think 32.5 hours is full time?

tillyandmolly · 31/03/2023 20:34

I'm at work 35 hours a week (5 x 7 hour shifts) with a 30 minute break, so technically it's 32.5. AIBU to think this is full time work?

Was out with some of my mum friends the other night and was straight up told how "it must be quite nice to have part time work even though the DC are in secondary school". My DC are in secondary school yes and I'm working full time because of that? (Not implying people have to of course, but it's full time surely?)

Is thar rubbish? Does that mean they have to make up the rest of the time unpaid?

Yes the rest is unpaid. My three days of teaching this week took 35 hours.

Barbecuebeans · 31/03/2023 21:17

It's as close to full time as to make your friends' remarks really catty. Anyway, most people I know who work less than full time seem to be really focused and get pretty much the same amount of work done.

Frances24 · 31/03/2023 21:18

I work for a large global finance company and full time (certainly in UK part of the business) is 35 hours. No one is contracted for more.

I do often end up working a little over that though.

tillyandmolly · 31/03/2023 21:18

Okay, seems it really isn't probably full time after all, but as have some have said, calling myself a part time worker feels so so wrong Grin and laughing at "no where near full time" hahaha.

I wish. I’ve done 65 hours this week.

Lcb123 · 31/03/2023 21:19

I’d say 36+ is full time. But also it doesn’t really matter

Polis · 31/03/2023 21:20

My hours are nominally 37.5 per week, excluding breaks. The reality is that I am expected to work whatever hours needed to get the job done. It could be 70 hours one week and 10 the next.

Gh12345 · 31/03/2023 21:21

I think 35-40+ a week is full time. But I really wouldn’t class you as part time either. Don’t take any notice.

EsmeSusanOgg · 31/03/2023 21:21

Over 30 hours is considered full time in terms of DWP and HMRC benefits. So yes. It is full time.

ChrisPPancake · 31/03/2023 21:21

I work 32 hours over 4 days (there 34 hours including half hour break each day). I'm part time.

TheSnowyOwl · 31/03/2023 21:21

If your employer offers more contractual hours then it’s not full time. I generally think of 35 hours a week being the lowest end of full time and 40 being the higher, with many jobs have countless expected overtime on top of it. The government saying 30 hrs+ really doesn’t count as that’s just to try to be detrimental in terms of benefits.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 31/03/2023 21:23

It's not full time but i think your friends where being bitchy how they said it

Phoebo · 31/03/2023 21:23

40 hours working, that doesn't include lunch breakdown is full time. If you're lucky your work place might do 37.5 hours

BanditsGravyStain · 31/03/2023 21:24

There isn’t a “set” number of hours which is classed as full time but usually anything over 35 is considered full time according to the .gov

To think 32.5 hours is full time?
shivawn · 31/03/2023 21:24

No, it's part time. I work 30 hours a week (excluding breaks) and it's worlds away from when I used to work full time (39 hours).

Mypatioisminging · 31/03/2023 21:25

In my work place this wouldn’t be full time either, it would be the equivalent of four days full time. For me you’d be a part timer. I don’t know any place where full time is 32.5 hours a week. It’s Really not about how often you leave the house. It’s about how many hours you work.

JudgeRudy · 31/03/2023 21:25

I'd say 37.5hrs or more was the cut off for fulltime. I've never know anyone count lunch breaks when telling you how many hours they work! Even if I had an hour commute each way I'd still say I worked 40hrs. I wouldn't add on 10 hours travel or another 5hrs lunch.

DepartmentOfMysteries · 31/03/2023 21:25

I think that is definitely part time! Full time is a minimum of 37.5 hours I think. I work approx the same hours as you, and it is classed as 70% of full time.

twolilacs · 31/03/2023 21:26

For many years (decades actually) I worked full time, and it was always 'office hours' of 9 to 5, or 9 to 5.30 with an hour for lunch. So either 35 working hours or 37.5. I thought that was normal.

Anything less than 35 hours would be part-time as far as that goes.

No me neither, the op seems to think her breaks are working time.

CountZacular · 31/03/2023 21:26

I work 30 hours and to me that’s part time, but I’ve also filled out surveys that list ‘full time’ work as 30+ hours (actually I think mumsnet might list it like that on their surveys).

37 hours is full time to me as that’s full time in our authority. It’s not a race to the bottom though and I think 32.5 is close enough.

thegrain · 31/03/2023 21:28

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2023 21:16

I teach secondary. I am paid 32.5hrs a week. I work far more. I am definitely full time, despite what my contract might say.

Being ripped off aren't they teachers. Anyone else would get paid overtime!!!

tillyandmolly · 31/03/2023 21:28

@Mypatioisminging why do you think that? I literally said in my title 32.5... if I thought it was, I'd have just said the whole time 35? Grin

OP posts:
gogohmm · 31/03/2023 21:29

Full time is 35 hours not including breaks or more

Nivgor · 31/03/2023 21:29

Yeah it's full time.

Back before minimum wage when employers decided to stop paying for any breaks whatsoever (because if they can't fuck you one way they'll fuck you another) full time was anything between 36-40 hours a week with five of those hours being lunch/half hour lunch and a tea break so a full time contract could legit be 31 active working time a week.

Your friends are being ridiculous. If you're at your place of employment for 35 hours a week you're clearly full time regardless of how tight your employer is. And you're hardly lucky that you don't get paid for all the hours you have to put aside towards work even if 2.5 of those hours are hanging around ready to start working again.
