To think 32.5 hours is full time?

I'm at work 35 hours a week (5 x 7 hour shifts) with a 30 minute break, so technically it's 32.5. AIBU to think this is full time work?

Was out with some of my mum friends the other night and was straight up told how "it must be quite nice to have part time work even though the DC are in secondary school". My DC are in secondary school yes and I'm working full time because of that? (Not implying people have to of course, but it's full time surely?)

37 is full time

Gwdihooooo · 31/03/2023 21:07

I’m a teacher, I’m contracted 32.5hrs but work way way more than that

Thedogscollar · 31/03/2023 21:07

Full time in my organisation is 37.5 hrs. You have part time hours spread over 5 days. No benefits of part time work but definitely part time hours.

QueenBee1234 · 31/03/2023 21:07

Nope, part time.

DutchCowgirl · 31/03/2023 21:07

In my country the employer defines how many hours are on a full time contract.
34 hours is full time at my company. And i still work parttime😂

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/03/2023 21:07

I work 3x 12 1/2 hour night shifts.

TheGoogleMum · 31/03/2023 21:09

I've heard 32+ described as full time before, although I work that but am technically part time in my role. Shorter work days is a nice perk to have as long as being paid sufficiently!

Zapzep · 31/03/2023 21:09

The way you shift pattern is broken up means that it will feel full time even though it isn’t , does it matter what other people think? Are you happy?

UniversalMamma · 31/03/2023 21:09

It might not be 100% full time hours (I’d class this as 35 hours or above, with the standard at 37.5), however ‘part time’ kind of makes you think of half hours - 20-25 hours a week. The upper limit when I think of part time hours is probably about 30.

I think you’re somewhere in between part and full time OP. I’d say three quarter hours but at 86% it’s more than that. Reduced hours maybe? Get why being labelled part time probably feels a bit annoying when you’re working 5 days a week and your shift is only half an hour less than full time..!

TeaForMeandThee · 31/03/2023 21:09

You are part time, that's a 4 day week. Full time is 37.5, if not 40 hours plus in my book.

BecauseTheOnlyWayIsUp · 31/03/2023 21:10

@Fluckinghell FFS what?!?

Reinventinganna · 31/03/2023 21:10

What does your contract say?
That’s the only thing that will tell you if you are full time or part time. Not your friends, not a load of wailing Wilmas on here that think anything under 83 hours is skiving.

BTW it really doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy your job, get a good work life balance and can afford to live.

FlorentinePaper · 31/03/2023 21:10

A 35 hour teaching week is a lot more full time than a lot of jobs.

Theluggage15 · 31/03/2023 21:10

I think 35 hours and above is generally considered full time in U.K. but if someone told me they worked 32.5 hours, I’d still consider that pretty much full time and wouldn’t make the comments your friends did

Morningcoffeeview · 31/03/2023 21:10

It depends on your organisation and how they pay. Mine classes a day as 7 hours but they don’t pay for a lunch break. So that’s why they do it like that. My FT would therefore be 35 but in reality it’s 40 as I’m expected to work 8 hours a day with a one hour break.

Tohaveandtohold · 31/03/2023 21:12

In my company, full time is 35 hours so basically 9-5 with one hour lunch or 9 to 4:30 with 30 minutes lunch in some departments. Anything more than 35 hours is overtime.
32.5 is basically almost full time as it’s more than 0.9, most people who do part time at my place of work though do 30 hours or less.

babynoname22 · 31/03/2023 21:12

Teachers in 'full time' contracts are paid for 32.5 hours a week

SquigglePigs · 31/03/2023 21:14

I think I saw somewhere that 35 hrs or more was classed as full time.

My company full time is 40 hours so you'd be on just over 0.8 because lunch breaks aren't paid.

I have colleagues who work 32 hrs, so only 0.5hr less than you but it's 4 full 8 hr days and a day off so more clearly part time

Having said that I can see that 5x7 hr shifts will feel like full time because it uses most of all the standard working days of the week.

Is thar rubbish? Does that mean they have to make up the rest of the time unpaid?

coffeecookie · 31/03/2023 21:15

I'm 35 hours and that's classed as full-time where I work but they cut everyone from 37 to save money.

32.5 is almost full-time as 7 hours a day in the workplace is hardly giving you loads of free time.

NEmama · 31/03/2023 21:16

There is no specific number of hours that makes someone full or part-time, but a full-time worker will usually work 35 hours or more a week.

Purtyburty · 31/03/2023 21:16

I am a teacher and my pay slip says I get paid for 32.5 hours. I teach full time. Work around 60 hours a week.

I teach secondary. I am paid 32.5hrs a week. I work far more. I am definitely full time, despite what my contract might say.

DancingWithBroccoli · 31/03/2023 21:16

It's not full time. It's roughly what I work. It feels full time, but full time is generally considered either 40hrs/week or 37.5hrs/week. You r nearly full time though!

babynoname22 · 31/03/2023 21:17

@thegrain correct. It's not rubbish. I would post my pay slip but not keen on doing that. But yes the rest is unpaid.
