Not a flea, possibly a bed bug but it's hard to tell from the photo

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2023 14:28

I would definitely flee if I came across a bed bug.

toastfiend · 30/03/2023 14:30

Hard to tell from the photo, but it does look and sound a bit like it could be a bed bug. It isn't a flea.

Check the sheets and seams of mattresses, any gaps in wooden bed frames etc. Little blood streaks and black spots on bedding and in corners and places for them to hide are good indicators of bed bugs.

If you do have an infestation I'd strongly advise heat treatment if you're able to afford it. Don't be tempted to move your DS out of his bedroom in the meantime (or at least have someone else sleeping in there if you do) - all it'll do is encourage the bed bugs to scatter in search of a new person to bite, thereby spreading them further around your house.

davegrohll · 30/03/2023 14:31

I'd say bed bug

davegrohll · 30/03/2023 14:31

Put your finger near it if it's a flea it will soon disappear !

serialthreadkiller · 30/03/2023 14:39

Could it be a carpet beetle?

serialthreadkiller · 30/03/2023 14:42

The adults look like tiny immature uncoloured ladybirds and the larvae are furry looking (sometimes called woolly bears)

Could it be a carpet beetle?

In fairness I have never seen a bed bug or flea but I thought they were suppsoed to be very small? This does look more like a carpet beetle.

OneTC · 30/03/2023 14:54

Fleas are quite tiny but bed bugs are bigger than you think.

OR FLEE?

Yes, I think you should definitely flee Wink

Seriously though, hard to tell, could you take a close up?

headingtosun · 30/03/2023 15:11

I would also suggest carpet beetles.

OdeToBarney · 30/03/2023 15:27

I'm on the app so can't zoom on the photo but from what I can see it looks like a carpet beetle. I had some behind my bed, but didn't know until I found one crawling on the bed frame. 🤢

Hazelnuttella · 30/03/2023 15:29

Carpet beetles don’t move very fast do they? And they’re kind of stripy. Hard to tell from the picture.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2023 15:38

It's definitely not a flea. Dont think it's a bed bug. Looks more like some sort of beetle.

EyesOnThePies · 30/03/2023 15:47

Not a flea.

A flea would jump. Very fast and far so you might not see where it goes.

Bed bugs have a dark reddish brown colour and come from tiny to a couple of Mm.

But there are lots of types of small black beetles.

Has your Ds got any bites?

every single word of this. I hope it is a carpet beetle. Has your son been bitten? Some people (looking at you son) don't react to the bites so the early warning system doesn't work.

Ktime · 30/03/2023 16:23

OP, I found carpet beetle larvae in the guest room last year, between the bed and skirting board. They were feasting on the chest hairs that had gathered there!

Here is the pic of the carpet beetle I found. Do your bugs look like this?

BED BUG OR FLEE?
Millymollymaisy · 30/03/2023 17:03

No bites on anyone. I have looked around the mattress in both bedrooms and cannot see any tell tale signs.

I have hoovered the entire house, stripped and boil washed all bedding/ blankets and sheets .

I am going to boil wash my sons soft toys but the machine I have takes a good couple hours between each wash when on a 60..

I’ve sprayed the upstairs with a flew spray from the vets ( a highly recommend one ) but have run out quickly so will need to go grab more.

I wash all our sheets on a weekly Basis, deep clean my house weekly and tidy every day. No pets … don’t get this at all!

Flea

areyousittingontheremote · 30/03/2023 17:36

It's not a flea.

I would say bed bug that's just fed as it's fat and they are very thin when they've not fed.

Any visible bites? They are usually done in threes.

Don't use a bomb, it dispersed them.

You need to bleach and boiling water what you can, crevices, and get fumigation in.

Millymollymaisy · 30/03/2023 21:09

I thought bed bugs were reddish / brown colour ? This is jet black? No bites on anyone we are family of 4…

Looks too big for a flea, fleas are shiny too. If you can catch it, it's very unlikely to be a flea as they are very quick they don't scurry or run the jump.

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/03/2023 22:07

Doesn't look like either tbh, baby woodlouse?
