To judge the woman on the bus

IDoughnutKnow · 29/03/2023 19:11

She was on the bus this afternoon with two children - aged around 3 and 6. The 6yo was jumping around, doing the whole 'look at meeee' thing, standing up, messing around. The younger child had been bribed into submission with a massive doughnut. The mother (and I know she was the mother, as the older child kept addressing her as Mum) spent the entire 30 minute journey on her phone. I could see Facebook, then Instagram, then she was just scrolling around watching videos. Every now and then she would get pissed off and tell the child to sit down and behave and stop bothering the other passengers - when it was evident to anyone with half a brain that she needed to get off her bloody phone and talk to the child.

WABU to judge her hard?

No come on, the mum would have had to spend £10 on scratch cards from the newsies first wouldn’t she, to try and get money to pay for the MacDonalds.

PogoThePunk · 29/03/2023 19:26

Probably a McDonald's for tea too, washed down with coca cola.
She clearly isn't a mumsnetter or the op would have seen that amongst the FB and insta etc.
Out of interest, were you sitting directly behind her to see what pages she was looking at op?

I was diagonally behind her, so sort of over her right shoulder.

Photo of the doughnut or it didn't happen 😄

Anycolouryoulike · 29/03/2023 19:36

Were they all wearing their PJs too?

Was it a jam, or a custard doughnut?

I’d have judged a custard doughnut…

Going against the grain, I think parents should do their best to keep their kids under control in public places out of consideration for other people. Obviously sometimes that's easier than others, but ignoring a child who is behaving stupidly on a moving vehicle for 30 minutes so you can check Facebook etc is just wrong. Sets a terrible example for the child, apart from anything else.

Yup. I would add that I didn't judge the child at all. She was just being a lively and ignored six-year-old (well, ignored until she was snapped at, but then ignored again).

YANBU but you will hear the usual comments of how you just saw a snapshot etc etc She sounds fairly useless. Imagine what home life is like. Not good.

So would I...on their good taste.
Custard doughnuts are the best.

Ktime · 29/03/2023 19:38

Given there is a crisis of sedentary children, a kid jumping up and down is a good sight to see, as long as he was safe.

Ignoring kids is not allowed. But if you read them a book or ask them to count red cars then you’re performance parenting. 😅

No, thats not performance parenting....thats just parenting.

It makes other lazier parents feel bad, so thats why they try to do it down.

Again - I wasn't judging the child. I was judging the mum ignoring her until she randomly got pissed off with her, then ignoring her again. The child was being a perfectly normal 6yo who needed her mum to talk to her or at least interact a bit with her.

The worse part of this thread is the stick up their arse posters agreeing with the OP.

I want a big doughnut now Blush

Me too.

I thought doughnuts were all a standard size. I'm off to Google giant doughnut shops now!

OMG I am doing keto and all I can think about is a custard donut. I wouldn't break my diet for a jam one, but custard ... 😋

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 19:40

If she'd have spent the half hour talking to her about mundane crap you'd have complained about that too.

Fluffodils · 29/03/2023 19:39

I could. Unfortunately it was a bit packed. But I was very tempted to tap the mum on the shoulder and tell her to get off her bloody phone (though she also looked scary, so that thought stayed safely in my mind).

I only really like those donuts you get by the seaside or at funfairs, you know, gooey molten lumps of fatty dough rolled in sugar 🤤

I absolutely wouldn't. I would have thought she was doing a good job of entertaining a very lively child. In short, doing what she should have been doing.
