DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

You can’t be serious…

I didn’t even think there were people out there who frowned upon rice krispies for breakfast. We rarely have anything but cereal…

😱 you know that's tantamount to child abuse don't you?

You are going to be stoned to death with homemade, wholegrain, seeded, naturally-sweetened, breakfast muffins, by the Superior Mummies on here. Brace yourself, those things are heavy.

there's far more than frowning on this thread. some of the replies are...a tad overwrought.

It wouldn’t be adequate for a strapping teenager but as your children are still small I would think it’s fine.

Many strapping teenagers sat nothing at breakfast- mine is never hungry til about 10/11am (then never stops)

Mcmew · 29/03/2023 20:18

It's total crap, it's not really food is it? I strongly agree with you OP. I grew up on refined 'cereals' but I avoid giving to DS. Organic oats and cornflakes here. But I am far far far from a good cook, or SAHM type. 😅 I just agree on this!

Topseyt123 · 29/03/2023 20:19

Perfectly fine. Stop fussing.

I grew up on that sort of thing for breakfast. Usually just a bowl of cereal. It's what I usually still have now and I am 56.

Rice Krispies themselves are not particularly sugary, only if you add sugar to them, as my Dad loved to do.

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 29/03/2023 20:21

It's fine! One of my sons had this, still does, and he's now a junior doctor

Blueey · 29/03/2023 20:21

For a lot of people this is a normal breakfast for their kids. And of course no one will starve or become malnourished with it. But I agree with you, it's not really any type of nutrition - processed puffed simple carbs.

I tend to want them to have a decent bit fat and protein in their breakfast - scrambled eggs and bacon, cheese omelette, porridge with berries, or something like toast, slices of cheese and some fruit. My youngest now loves cheerios so he has them with plenty of whole milk and a chopped up banana, sometimes followed by a couple of scrambled eggs or something because it just seems so empty nutritionally otherwise. For what it's worth they're skinny, active kids.

All that being said I had two pieces of asda smartprice white bread toast with cheap margarine and jam every morning for breakfast across my childhood and was fine so I'm probably over thinking.

Lilywc · 29/03/2023 20:22

Why buy them then?

CauliflowerBalti · 29/03/2023 20:23

My son would carry on eating until he popped. What they physically can eat isn’t necessarily what they need. I agree that kids should go to school ready to learn on a full tummy but cereal and fruit is plenty.

YABU. I can understand why you might prefer a slightly healthier cereal - less sugary, for example - but it's a normal, reasonable breakfast. And as an equal parent, your DH does not have to follow your rules about what constitutes an acceptable breakfast and what doesn't.

Rice crispies don't have any added sugar. They are just rice. Why do people keep saying they are sugary?

Not really seeing how Cheerios with milk and banana is any better than rice crispies with milk and banana as described by op. Cheerios are full of sugar, so worse, if anything.

RecoveGrowThrive · 29/03/2023 20:27

Cereal is marketed as healthy because of research paid for by Kellogs! It's sugary nonsense! Feed your kids what you can muster in a busy life, but don't kid yourself that cereal is nutrient rich, healthy food. Sometimes my kid has porridge, sometimes a bagal- but porridge has a lower GI...

Surely cornflakes are just as bad as rice crispies? They are both processed carbs...

Unihorn · 29/03/2023 20:29

We're on Chocolate Pillows and Weetos in this house but we have no standards.

shutthewindownow · 29/03/2023 20:33

Eh ? It's a breakfast cereal. Come on seriously 😐

motherofawhirlwind · 29/03/2023 20:38

Well I've just had them for my dinner Grin

Viviennemary · 29/03/2023 20:38

It's fine. All these cereals are fortified with vitamins AFAIK

Why would they need to be naturally sweetened 🫤 I find the seeds so so sweet on their own, I could only manage a nibble in the first place.

Tapsthemic · 29/03/2023 20:41

I’m with you OP - it’s usually a bowl of porridge, sometimes followed by toast or a little scrambled egg if they’re going through a growth spurt!

PumpkinPie2016 · 29/03/2023 20:43

I think it's fine - probably what a lot of kids have in the morning?!

My son is 9 and has cereal - usually cornflakes or weetabix plus fruit and a piece of toast or cheese with apple. He is a big eater though despite being skinny!

Then he takes an apple for morning snack.

FWIW, when I was a kid, I often couldn't face much breakfast but I was fine. I've never really eaten cereal as I don't like milk. I've reached the grand age of 36 without it doing me any harm.

Cereal is bad, except for cornflakes? Why do they escape being a disgusting cereal? Why are they allowed the label of food while other cereals are ‘not really good?’ For what it’s worth their second ingredient is… sugar! The devil. I’m surprised anyone can look at a cornflake without having a diabetic attack.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/03/2023 20:45

That’s plenty! Ours have weetabix and fruit or sometimes Rice Krispies.

The agave nectar is probably just to hold the seeds together.
