DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Lots of cultures eat rice for breakfast.

Rice crispies just have more added sugar but they also like many cereals are fortified with vitamins so they’re not the worst thing in the world.

I’ve not eaten them for years so I can’t remember how filling they are.

If your DCs enjoy them and it fills them up then I’d carry on.
You could even compromise and have them as just a weekend breakfast.

OoooohMatron · 28/03/2023 20:49

It's healthy Cereal. What do you want them to have a full fry up

Bah hahahaa my skinny healthy active 6yo would eat you alive from starvation if you inflicted your healthy diet ideas on him. A healthy diet is healthy nutritious food (not sugary empty calorie cereals) and plenty of it.

bellac11 · 28/03/2023 21:09

Is it just me, I feel cold and empty every time I see reference to 'a piece of fruit'

There are very few things that less satisfying to me than a 'piece of fruit'

Almost worse, which is strange because its something added to that, is 'yoghurt and a piece of fruit', cold, empty, wet and I dont really see that as great nutrition either, I dont know why its always presented as if it is.

Im not a massive fan of rice krispies, I dont eat cereal as it makes me ravenous but a diet is a whole diet, not just one meal, on one day, its about what you eat overall, over weeks and months.

Also not everyone likes all these suggestions, particularly children and not everyone wants to eat breakfast, I dont usually eat until around 11ish personally. Just cant face food first thing.

Bucketheadbucketbum · 28/03/2023 21:10

It's ultraproceszed and full of sugar

I'd avoid

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 28/03/2023 21:34

Been my breakfast for years. I would say it's fine for kids to eat just that for breakfast.

CrazyHedgehogLover · 28/03/2023 21:48

Seems fine to me? My children often have cereal before school/toast or sometimes a toasted bagel/crumpets.. I don’t see the problem and this should be more then filling for them at least until there due snack time/lunch.

Fairislefandango · 28/03/2023 22:52

Rice Krispies are mostly air. I'm not the carb police, honestly (I love carbs!) but if I eat just a sugary or refined carby breakfast I'm ravenous 2 hours later - hungrier than I am if I have no breakfast at all, weirdly. I don't have time to make a cooked breakfast in the morning, but some wholemeal toast and peanut butter, or muesli will see me through until lunch. It's not that there's no sugar in those, itthat there's more substantial stuuf and a bit of protein in it, I think.

winningeasy · 29/03/2023 07:25

I think it sounds fine

Maybe get some different more fibrous cereal options like bran flakes, oatibix and granola

Full fat milk

Add in a yoghurt

Have 2-3 different fruit options so they get variety

A hand full of nuts would be a nice addition

winningeasy · 29/03/2023 07:27

Then at weekends do eggs / avo / mushrooms /sausage etc

RedRobyn2021 · 29/03/2023 07:39

I'm with you OP, I much prefer giving my DD porridge/weatabix/bran flakes/shreddies because I've noticed she does stay full for longer.

Ostryga · 29/03/2023 07:42

Off the back of this Dd has had cream cheese on toast, some sliced avo and some berries for breakfast this morning and I have to say I do feel quite smug (lighthearted!!) so have to say that is better than Rice Krispies 😂

Mumza5 · 29/03/2023 09:17

Don’t overthink it! Relax and enjoy them when they are young, they grow up all too quickly!

MyOldFriendTime · 29/03/2023 16:20

How can rice crispies be nothing but air whilst simultaneously being full of sugar? It’s an enigma all right 🤯

Sugary puffs of air is the technical term I believe.

Not really an enigma. They weigh virtually nothing, and are not very filling, but have a relatively high sugar content per 100g.

They stole the concept from meringues

Bekstar · 29/03/2023 19:29

I'd say rice Krispies is a releitevly.normal and healthy breakfast for most kids.

TheJade · 29/03/2023 19:31

Cereals are absolutely rubbish nutritionally for children before school. I totally agree. I’ve seen the results of this pole and I realise I am very much in the minority which shocks me.

having said that though, my husband has a very poor knowledge about nutrition and how to fuel the body properly so maybe everyone else does too!!!

TheJade · 29/03/2023 19:32

Also, just to add, these process cereals would fall under the category of ‘highly processed foods’ if you research into this type of food, you will see that there is a big shit storm coming. This is something that I have been researching and writing about recently and it’s terrifying

Alice786 · 29/03/2023 19:38

I think depends on the child, some children don't eat alot at breakfast or are fussy so anything is better than nothing. In OPs case it sounds like her children usually eat well but her dp was trying to get away with easier breakfast option and the children were asking for more which means it wasn't enough for them as they are used to eating more. He should consider the children's needs next time. If the children were satisfied with the breakfast then it shouldn't be as issue.

CountryMouse22 · 29/03/2023 19:42

They're fortified with iron, B vitamins and vitamin D3.

HarryBlaster · 29/03/2023 19:52

My daughter needs three bowls to feel full on this so I stopped buying it. She has a bowl of porridge now.

TempyBrennan · 29/03/2023 19:54

I didn’t even think there were people out there who frowned upon rice krispies for breakfast. We rarely have anything but cereal…

Solonge · 29/03/2023 19:58

Yep…its fine. Look at the dietary info on the pack. Calories, vitamins and minerals and of course eaten with a good portion of milk, plus fruit, good brekkie.
