DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

I agree with you OP. Occasionally it's OK but I prefer to make something with more fibre/protein. They're pretty pointless imo.

CallintheClownies · 29/03/2023 20:48

Rice crispies don't have any added sugar. They are just rice. Why do people keep saying they are sugary?

Dunno whether to laugh or cry reading this.

How's about you read the label on the packet?

xsquared · 29/03/2023 20:48

The children are 3 and 6.

They don't need cheese omelette, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast everyday, as long as they are getting balanced meals other times.

Who has time to faff around with cooked breakfast, while getting them ready to go to school on a daily basis.

The agave nectar is probably just to hold the seeds together.

Well… as long as it’s agave nectar. And of course only a tiny tiny spot of it every other Friday. In that case it might be acceptable. Obviously followed up with a few scrambled eggs and an avocado! No breakfast is acceptable without them.

There are some really horrible sounding ‘men’ on these threads often and my blood boils reading about them. But then you read the odd thread like this and I can’t help but think some women must also be very hard work to live with. I know this is just one small thing OP and you might well be actually amazing as a partner and a mum, but if someone was undermining my parenting like this it would actually drive me mad. If they were having a chocolate bar or nothing then fair enough- but the example you have given here isn’t something to start having a go at someone about, you are just going to come off as patronizing and irritating.

Mrsgreen100 · 29/03/2023 20:57

not In my house, porridge and toast and fruit

Ap42 · 29/03/2023 20:58

Don't really see the issue here. Something with more fibre in, complex carbs, like weetabix would be better. But it's just a bowl of cereal in the grand scheme of things. It's not something that would bother me.

OMG12 · 29/03/2023 20:59

Had this every morning of my childhood )sometimes we had Frosties or coco pops as a treat. Absolutely fine!

Thinking2022 · 29/03/2023 21:03

cheerios are meant be healthy and rice crispies are not that dissimilar. I was happy for our children to eat weatabix/ oatbix/ rice crispies and sometimes even cocopops. Some variety and fruit and if you have time for eggs great

HelloBunny · 29/03/2023 21:11

It’s just man laziness. My DH just used the bathroom hand towel once again to dry off our toddler. Doesn’t matter how many times... He can’t be arsed. Same applies with your DH & the kids’ breakfast.

Oblomov23 · 29/03/2023 21:11

It's totally fine. Mine had porridge, toast, pancakes, waffles, shreddies, rice crispies, weetabix.

SueVineer · 29/03/2023 21:13

Yes it’s fine

Appleabananasandpears · 29/03/2023 21:22

Totally agree rice crispies are void of substance, much like rice cakes. They are quite yummy though. Some cereals make me cringe, like those cinnamon squares and cookie crisps, all sugar and a bit of wheat, worst way to start the day.

LuckySantangelo35 · 29/03/2023 21:23

Just cos the kids will eat more doesn’t mean they need to

lots of kids will just eat and eat if food is put in front of them

justlliloleme · 29/03/2023 21:25

My kids don’t eat breakfast, they eat at break at school - whatever works for your kids is fine. I assume they have decent meals the rest of the time? A bowl of Rice Krispies isn’t going to kill them. I can see why your husband feels the way he does, I think you’re being OTT.

GG1986 · 29/03/2023 21:27

My 7 year old has cereal for breakfast. Does that make me a shit mum?! 🤔

👏FacebookFun - they're a load of rubbish wrapped up in marketing, and the kids will be hungry and snacking by 10.30am. No wonder half the country is a bit chubby at best.

My kids usually have a bowl of cereal in the morning. .... and at tea time!

I had a bowl of rice crispies and a spoon of sugar for breakfast most of my childhood and I am still alive. Got good exam results too!

Seems a fine breakfast. Everyone doesn't want eggs and bacon so early in the morning.

Mum23amazingkids · 29/03/2023 21:49

I agree with him , milk cereals and fruit seems very balanced

poundshoptealights · 29/03/2023 21:52

I agree with you OP. Rice Krispies aren't that bad compared to some stuff, but not as good as the other options you mention like porridge, toast, etc. They lack nutrients and don't contain enough protein, even with milk. I also think Rice Krispies + fruit = energy slump as both are high GI and there is no protein to slow the blood sugar drop that will follow.

rosewater20 · 29/03/2023 21:55

NO! Cereal is a dessert and a processed food that I would never give my children for breakfast (or any other time of day).

GymNewbie · 29/03/2023 21:56

My kids often have just cereal or just fruit as its a struggle to get them to eat breakfast.
Its perfectly normal yabu
