DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Yes. It’s a cereal. It’s fine

Cas112 · 28/03/2023 07:48

It's literal cereal?

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 28/03/2023 07:48

Totally fine.

turnthebiglightoff · 28/03/2023 07:48

It's plenty.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/03/2023 07:48

Not everyone likes big breakfasts

CindersAgain · 28/03/2023 07:48

I think with the milk it’s ok.

Alargeoneplease89 · 28/03/2023 07:49

What do you normally give them? Sounds fine to me

Howtohideasausage · 28/03/2023 07:49

It’s fine.

Unbridezilla · 28/03/2023 07:49

It's what I ate, with a banana everyday for years (school and above). I'd usually take a small snack for first break, like a babybel or ryvita and cream cheese and an apple, but I don't think I was ever particularly hungry

donttellmehesalive · 28/03/2023 07:50

Yep, fine.

Sometimes kids want something more substantial, sometimes they want cereal.

Presumably, they also have a mid morning snack and then lunch.

Maray1967 · 28/03/2023 07:50

No - most of those type of cereals are not very nutritious. If the fruit is a banana, then ok. Otherwise no. Mine were on weetabix and toast.

WildAloofRebel · 28/03/2023 07:50

It’s fine.

In our house it’s weetabix+bran flakes, and an actimel. No hope of protein in the am. I’d rather they fill their tummies with carbs rather than reject and argue about other foods!

Bimblybomeyelash · 28/03/2023 07:50

You may not like it for your children, but surely it is obvious that plenty of people do? It’s breakfast cereal that has been on shelves and in peoples breakfast bowls for decades. When I was a kid I used to have it with sliced banana and sultanas on top. And a spoon of sugar!

CrystalCoco · 28/03/2023 07:50

You need to google what rice crispies are cos they're not 'puffs of air' 😅

Ostryga · 28/03/2023 07:51

Sounds good to me! Dd will have cereal and fruit and be fine until lunch. Sometimes I might scramble an egg if she’s extra hungry. Or she’ll have toast.

Don’t think you need to make a big thing of it, if they’re not hungry then I don’t see an issue.

MWNA · 28/03/2023 07:51

Sounds like a perfectly normal breakfast!

OnaBegonia · 28/03/2023 07:51

What do you do? full cooked breakfast?

It’s fine. Use full fat milk if they are happy with it.

MooseBreath · 28/03/2023 07:51

I had an entire childhood of a bowl of cereal as breakfast. Absolutely fine and not hungry in the slightest. You're being rather precious.

Sparkletastic · 28/03/2023 07:51

I'd try to switch to a more nutritious cereal and offer a yoghurt or fromage frais too but otherwise fine.

waterlego · 28/03/2023 07:51

It wouldn’t be adequate for a strapping teenager but as your children are still small I would think it’s fine.

Mumdiva99 · 28/03/2023 07:52

I would prefer mine to have porridge, wheatbix, egg on toast etc HOWEVER....it's a breakfast. It does them no harm. They have been around years and years so can't hurt for breakfast. (Cocopops are my favourite breakfast cereal ever!!) It's not an argument I would have. (I would just leave them off the shopping list)

icelollycraving · 28/03/2023 07:52

II think it’s fine. Ds hasn’t eaten breakfast for some years, except very occasionally, he can’t face food straight away. I just load his lunch card as he has something at break, he’s older though.
When he was little, cereal or toast and fruit was fairly standard, sometimes eggs.

youshouldnthaveasked · 28/03/2023 07:53

That is more that adequate. Agree with your husband.

what do you want them to eat?
