DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Millions of kids start the day with a bowl of Rice Bubbles ( that’s what they’re called in Australia, England and Newzealand.
bit of banana, small juice. The milk provides calcium & protein, the banana, fibre minerals & potassium & the Rice Bubbles provide carbohydrates & minerals.
there’s nothing wrong with it.

Casperroonie · 28/03/2023 15:49

It's not a nutritious breakfast. It can still contain a fair but of added sugar. A nutritious breakfast would be more a bowl of no added sugar muesli, no added sugar yoghurt, fruit and wholemeal toast with butter and maybe honey. Butter is fat but fat isn't a problem in a balanced diet and really it's sugar that's unhealthy. Honey is a healthier choice in small quantities. I agree with you.

Itsmyturnnow1 · 28/03/2023 15:51

I agree it isn’t massively filling. My 4.5 ds has 2 weetabix with milk and blueberries and sometimes half a banana. When at home he has toast too! When at nursery he then has cereal there too!

Uh yep whole generations grew up on a bowl of cereal for breakfast!

MyOldFriendTime · 28/03/2023 16:18

Well what I’m taking from this thread is that I really fancy a pop tart now but alas, as they are not veggie, I cannot. But the good news is Aldi now do their own version which are vegan - get in 😋 🐷

What?! A bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit too much? Not if you have active kids who burn up a lot of energy. All mine are under 10 and either healthy/under weight per the BMI thing, I can see their ribs etc. None of them would be sustained by a bowl of Rice Krispies for breakfast.

Is this a joke? Rice crispies and fruit ?? Did I miss the bit where they ate the whole box and all the bananas??

Yep fine

ancientgran · 28/03/2023 17:24

I've had a "I've never watched Star Wars" moment. I've never tasted Nutella or a pop tart. Am I missing something?

Zooeyzo · 28/03/2023 17:43

I wish my 7 year old dd would eat a bowl of rice crispies. She seems to survive on air.

Not if you’re an adult 😉Food of the gods to
my kids (and me at their ages) - absolutely revolting to me now. Meridian does an amazing very nutty chocolate spread though.

I'll add granola and porridge to my approved list

Oooh, I wouldn't be so sure about granola. Quite highly processed, usually high fat sugar and salt. tsk, tsk.

Why do you think they put sugar in cereal if you actually can't taste it at all?

It's a preservative (so is salt) plus cooked sugar adds crunch. Hence granola.

The thing is (whisper it loud!) no food is perfect. Dried fruit is high in fibre, some vitamins and sugar, and very bad for teeth. You can eat high fibre cereals but then you need more sugar and salt to make them palatable. And no diet is perfect. Human beings evolved to survive and thrive on many different diets mostly with quite a lot of crap in them. That's why there are so many of us.

Trying to teach my step kids milk volume lol.

Ah, the lost art of stretching the cereal so you get the last spoon of both together...

It's better than nothing but personally I'd need to pair it with something like whole milk

So what do your children eat cereal with? Skimmed milk? Highly processed nut/grain liquids?

(This thread is so much fun!)

Sugar is not just for preservation reasons, it is to make plain cereals more palatable, hence ones aimed at children having more sugar in them. I'm sure I'm not the only one that can taste the sugar in cereal. Wheat biscuits are high fibre but have one of the lowest amounts of sugar and salt and porridge is high fibre so high fibre doesn't have to equal high sugar and salt.

And the thing is (whisper it loud) you can be interested in nutrition without it meaning you feed your DC a 'perfect diet', without making them eat super healthily all the time and without making it an issue. I can say rice Krispies aren't the best without being some kind of food police to my DC. I can say rice Krispies taste sweet because they do to me and I shouldn't be shamed because of this. My DC eat a varied diet, they know some things should be eaten less than others but I don't ban anything.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 28/03/2023 18:34

Erm yeah it's fine. My kids are 5 & 2 and they have rice crispies or some sort of cereal for breakfast every day

Sceptre86 · 28/03/2023 18:36

It won't be popular on mumsnet but it's a staple in our house The kids have a choice of cereals, toast or croissants followed by yoghurt. They tend to have pancakes or eggs at the weekend, alongside yoghurt and sometimes fruit. Assuming it's only school they are going to and will have milk and a mid morning snack ( ours do but I appreciate not all schools will) then I don't see the issue.

bakewellbride · 28/03/2023 18:45

You need to compromise with dh and just let him feed the kids this breakfast sometimes. As my dh likes to say 'they're not going to blow up" !!

J578 · 28/03/2023 18:55

Absolutely fine. Life is way too short to be arguing about that.

StaunchMomma · 28/03/2023 18:55

It's not puffs of air though, is it! If they were then they wouldn't be so bloody calorific!

I would think most kids go to school on a bowl of cereal or a couple of slices of toast. Most adults probably, too!

Remember, some cereals, including rice crispies, are fortified with added vits and mins. Throw a banana on top and it's looking pretty healthy, OP.

Kerry251978 · 28/03/2023 19:20

This isn’t real surely?!

BCBird · 28/03/2023 19:23

I'd say ni. Greek yogurt avd fruit woukd be better or boiled egg and a slice of brown toast or slice of toast,no sugar peanut butter and chopped banana

To be fair it would depend on the size of the bowl of cereal. At that age my DC would have a small bowl of cereal/porridge with fruit or one slice of toast so the size of the cereal could be smaller than you think. Plus different children do have different appetites, my DC have always been on the smaller side.

xsquared · 28/03/2023 19:45

Aren't cereals usually fortified with vitamins and minerals?
A bowl of ceral with milk would give you added calcium and protein, and the fruit would give extra vitamins, plus carbs depending in which type.

You say you give them what they ask for, granola, toast etc. Are they any better or worse than what your dh gives them?

PedroPascal · 28/03/2023 19:57

Wait until you hear about Rice Krispy Cakes OP. That's right, delicious puffs of air covered in chocolate and even sometimes topped with mini eggs to look like a birds nest. I heard you can die just from licking one. Avoid school bake sales just in case.

SpringIntoChaos · 28/03/2023 20:05

I had rice crispies for my lunch today...just that...it's fine! 🤷‍♀️
