DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

I'm with you OP. They're not filling at all. If my kids take rice krispies/coco pops etc when we're staying at a hotel they are inevitably hungry after half an hour.

Surely the obligatory post cereal massive hotel fry up fills them up?

Here's a breakfast that's easy and my son loved - I started it when I was dieting- think it might be hairy bikers.

Slice some strawberries and dry fry in a pan with some blueberries or sliced banana and half a spoonful of cinammon - till it all kind of wilts, shove on 2 crumpets with a dollop of fat free fromage fraise or thick Greek yoghurt - on top delicious!!

This snack business is ott as well. Sorry to be an old fart, but kids these days are seemingly continuously with something stuffed in their mouths. And don't get me started in the constant need for water.

But as I said, I am old, and therefore quite adequately fed and watered on a regular three times a day basis.

That's funny because my grandparents were old and my parents are old. They've always served breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea and supper. Many more meals than I do!

Why do people keep banging on about eggs for breakfast as though they are the holy grail? Some people can't eat eggs, some don't like them. They come out of a hen's hole. What has the hen been eating, that's what I want to know.

Probably the same people who post stuff about how human babies don't need milk from baby cows. But everyone should eat poached chickens amniotic fluid on toast.

Absolutely. After all, a family of four would be completely STUFFED on the fifth of a chicken they eat every night with a HUGE salad....

@Scratchybaby I did say that your case was very unusual, because very few children have all those real allergies. Or such a limited diet because of them. It's obviously very hard for you, but it's not really what the thread is about.

Seriously though your kids are getting the milk from the cereal plus fruit. They’ll survive. But maybe take Rice Krispies off the shopping list if you don’t see them as a substantial breakfast. 🤷🏻‍♀️

DD has cereal with milk or yoghurt most mornings. Sometimes she’ll have pancakes or French toast with fruit.

I’d love her to have eggs but she doesn’t want so much first thing. She doesn’t like toast, bagels etc.

I’ve tried her with “healthy” oatmeal cookies (oats and banana, air fried) or banana and egg pancakes, but she wasn’t keen.

Milk has plenty nutrition and the rice fills them up. They enjoy it. You give them different things now and then. Where’s the harm.

I cannot imagine needing to worry about my kids eating breakfast cereal 🙈 Coco Pops, Weetabix or Toast with Nutella are the favourites here 😀 My kids are the least ill in their class (barely ever miss a day at school, maybe one a year), super fit and thriving at school.

We also dont spend every second of our life fussing over our precious little poppets…get a grip! They ate breakfast…crack on with the day!

My kids have never really eaten breakfast even when they were little. If they did want anything a bowl of rice crispies would have been plenty at that age. They’re 16 and 17 now and still don’t eat until lunch time.

Personally, I rise before dawn to milk the goats, and make labneh for the children's breakfast. I serve it with a quarter teaspoon of organic Manuka honey (any more and it's far too sweet). On special occasions I give them half an apple but not more than once a month- I like to keep an eye on their sugar intake.

I had cornflakes with full fat milk with sugar added or toast and jam. My brother had Ready Break with cocoa and sugar on the top. My sister had either cornflakes. weetabix with hot milk and sugar on the top. My dad had baked beans on toast. My mum had a dry weetabix with butter on. None of us have ever been overweight/none of us have heart problems, diabetes ADHD/or other (my dad 84); fit as a fiddle + we didn't get mid-morning snacks at school. Breakfast was at 7.30 and and lunch was 12.30/1pm depending what sitting you were on. None of us starved and are all healthy. For breakfast, let the children eat what they want so long as it is not Pizza, fry-up every day. It's all too stupid. So long as you eat healthy nutritional food a day breakfast is just a first morning filling/energy providing food.

Give over mine had coco pops today yesterday weetabix day before porridge. Everyday it's probably not filling enough but once or twice a week is fine

I'm definitely not on a wind-up. I'm one of the few posters here who is genuinely shocked at how parents are so lacking in knowledge on nutrition.

The reason I asked 'why' is because a poster said she was given RC in hospital and therefore it was 'fine'.

I assume that is a joke. Everyone knows that food in the NHS is the pits, very unhealthy, and there have been campaigns for years to get it changed.

But you dont need to worry about cereal if they eat a balanced diet. Mine also have a couple of chocolate bisquits after school every day (shock horror!). As long as they eat plenty of fruit, veg, protein etc etc, you really dont need to worry about what cereal they eat.

It depends. I mean, they're probably fine, but they're what I would term a "stealing my slack" kind of breakfast.

What I mean by that is that I'm OK for me to feed my DC rice crispies as we're running out the door that morning, as I've just spent 10 minutes putting together a nutritional packed lunch for my DC and I've got chilli and veg planned for dinner that evening. So overall it balances out nutritionally. I'm using up my slack by giving rice crispies but making it up elsewhere.

If we were having oven pizza for dinner (our after swimming 'slack' dinner), I'd prefer my DC to have something more nutritious for breakfast like peanut butter toast, porridge and fruit.

If my DH was doing breakfast (either weekday or weekend), I'd expect a bit more effort than rice crispies tbh, because otherwise I have to make up the nutritional deficit somewhere else since I'm normally the one feeding DC.

It's a bit like when one parent is only in charge of the DC for a weekend morning or afternoon and lets them watch TV or gives them cake, ice cream and sweets the whole time. It's annoying because then the onus is on the other parent to balance it out with healthy eating or interaction.

This is a very sensible and balanced attitude, in my opinion, @Goldbar.

It doesn’t have to be full to the top, it just to be satiated.

It’s semantics really but… I remember my stomach rumbling really loudly at school before break and lunch (people used to make fun of me for it).
One of my DCs claims he is always hungry at school - and I can believe it given the amount he eats when he comes out and then again for dinner. So for me at least (and maybe the OP) I do want my kids to feel properly ‘full’ when they leave for the day.

You should have said they are still hungry in your OP. If they are saying they want more food then your husband is wrong for not giving them more food. I don't worry so much about whet food kids eat at breakfast as long as they get something in their tummy. Break time is at 10

The point being that, all those additional issues has meant that we've had advice directly from a dietician who went through his daily diet meal-by-meal, and said that fortified cereals could be a useful part of a child's diet. Yes, it's not greek yogurt and organic honey, but it's a short, sharp blast of vitamins that in the bigger picture, isn't the worst thing in the world.

What else do these kids eat during the day to make Rice Krispies the most worrying part of their diet??

Are they actually hungry though or just use to having an all you can eat buffet for breakfast?

a lot of children get too used to being constantly over fed so don’t understand when that’s not there. It doesn’t mean they are hungry!
