If you could go back to 1983, what's the first thing you'd do?

I'd buy a brand new Volvo 340 straight from the Volvo dealership

I haven't read the entire thread but I'd put an enormous accumulator bet on the 1984 Grand National.

Go to Gothenburg on the ferry.

Me too … happy days

Joystir59 · 28/03/2023 01:39

Make sure I get to see MJ in concert at his prime.

naffusername · 28/03/2023 02:18

Easier said than done. I lived in a BAOR married quarter about 15 minutes from the DDR.

It was a scary time and travel into the East zone was not easy

FromEden · 28/03/2023 03:06

I was only 1 but assuming we can go back as our current age, I would go to see as many 80s bands as I could and just soak up the atmosphere. I could find my mum and tell her not to marry that abusive alcoholic but then I wouldn't have my sister so I would probably leave it!

Rottweilermummy · 28/03/2023 06:20

Book tickets for Wham and Adam and the Ants 😍 still gutted I never got to see them lol

LlynTegid · 28/03/2023 07:05

Write to every Oxford and Cambridge college asking them not to admit Alexander Johnson.

Jack80 · 28/03/2023 07:08

Give my grandad and gran a big hug

Can't you do that now?

If I went back to the age I was then, I'd call my mother's bluff when she said she'd throw me out of the house if I went to art college instead of doing A levels/getting a job. I'd also remember to buy that 3 storey Georgian in Hoxton Square for £54k in 1989 (admittedly a wreck in a war zone at the time, but bloody hell...), to go home for the weekend in 1993 so I could stop my little brother going out and getting murdered (or else warn his mates not to let him out of their sight that night), and, sadly, to keep DH as a good friend rather than marry him. He's lovely, but it's not right. Oh, and not to have a perm or go on the Hip and Thigh diet. I was already thin and it started me on yo-yo dieting that has carried on all my life.

If I went back at my present age, I'd still try and do most of that and then buy property/shares/place a few bets...

Frostinmyface · 28/03/2023 08:19

Call for my mates to go up the park, burn our legs on the huge metal slide, dice with death on the roundabout and then walk to the shop for 10p’s worth of penny sweets.

GlomOfNit · 28/03/2023 08:38

If I was the age I currently am, I'd go back to 1983 and try to get hold of a ticket (or five) to Bowie's Serious Moonlight tour.

If I had to be the age I actually was in 1983 (10) I probably wouldn't, because I hadn't yet seen Labyrinth and thereafter become obsessed with the man. Grin

@Showdogworkingdog - your Morten Harket idea is genius. We could bunk off school (let's face it, we're not revising anyway - and two Es is a pretty standard offer, right?!)

Passivhaus · 28/03/2023 09:06

Love this thread but I was only two at the time so my options would be somewhat limited 😂

If I was an adult, definitely fag and a pint in the pub. I'd also love to drive a car without power steering 😂 80s cars are the best aesthetically imo too

Showdogworkingdog · 28/03/2023 20:11

yes! Supposedly he was living on pot noodles back then so bet he’d have been up for a wimpy at least. Although I was 13 in 83 so that would’ve made Morten a bit of a weirdo. And he’s left a trail of kids with different mums so probably for the best eh?

Flipper1234 · 28/03/2023 20:15

Reader, I would have kissed him…

It’s a Scottish football reference … in 1983 Aberdeen beat Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners Cup Final in Gothenburg. The ferry St. Clair was chartered directly to Gothenburg from the city and was the ultimate supporters bus. I had my National exams so couldn’t go 😕

SinnerBoy · 29/03/2023 00:46

I think I'd buy all the top 10 singles and store them and whatever quirky toys were available. Be worth a fortune now!

JambalayaOrGumbo · 29/03/2023 02:59

Get married to the same person again 💕

irreverent · 29/03/2023 03:01

Make sure I wasn't born in 1984

SinnerBoy · 29/03/2023 03:01

That's so lovely, Jambalaya!😃

TheMilkWhisperer · 29/03/2023 05:30

Any of

  • Learn to drive
  • Take a year out - I was far too young and immature to go to college when I did
  • Remember to buy that flat in 1986 when I graduated. My father offered me the money for a deposit but I didn’t think it right for me to take it. The flat was a 2 bed in central Bristol- 63K.
sashh · 29/03/2023 06:34

Refuse to go the the VI form my parents chose.

It made me ill physically and mentally. I was too scared of my mother to not go and I hated it, it was a complete waste of 2 years of my life.

Northernsouloldies · 29/03/2023 07:29

Go to morecambe Central pier Northern soul all niter, dance till 8am and bring back a shit load records bought at 83 prices worth a mint today. 😁
