to ask why people don’t reverse in?

to parking spaces…
i know the safest is to reverse in and
drive out, so why do 95% of all cars drive in?
every time I go shopping I see cars desperately trying to get out of their parking bay with cars and walkers going past, whilst if they had reversed in they would get out so easily.

it makes zero sense.

I need to get the pram out of the boot and the shopping in.
It would be stupid to back in.

user1471517900 · 25/03/2023 22:17

In supermarkets it makes sense to drive straight in, so you can load the boot with shopping without having to squeeze the trolley past the car.

pncr · 25/03/2023 22:17

I drive in so that I can get to the boot to load up my groceries easily.

I'm disabled and getting down the side in a normal space with a trolley to manoeuvre would defeat me.

TKRedLemonade · 25/03/2023 22:17

I prefer reversing out so I drive in.

Optimist1 · 25/03/2023 22:17

Easier access to the boot if you've driven in!

Sparklesocks · 25/03/2023 22:17

Some people don’t feel as comfortable/confident reversing compared to driving forwards

VintageThoughts · 25/03/2023 22:18

I reverse in everywhere except the supermarket as I need to get to the boot.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/03/2023 22:18

All of the above.

snitzelvoncrumb · 25/03/2023 22:18

Because I need to get to the boot. How else would I get the pram and shopping in the car?

Startuplife · 25/03/2023 22:19

I’m absolutely terrible at parking and it stresses me out having other people watch me trying to reverse in which always takes a couple of attempts if I’m being watched. I’ll do it if there’s no cars behind me though.

Seeline · 25/03/2023 22:19

I always reverse when parking and onto my drive - unless it's the supermarket so I can get my shopping in the boot.

Chasingsquirrels · 25/03/2023 22:19

I reverse into most places I park, but not the supermarket where I need to access the boot.

prescribingmum · 25/03/2023 22:19

In supermarkets, I assume it’s for easy access to the boot. I hate parking forward first and go out of my way to find a space that doesn’t back onto other cars (if that makes sense!) so I can reverse in and access the boot

Why more people don’t reverse into their driveways, I will never understand. So much safer

NeedMoMoney · 25/03/2023 22:19

I reverse onto my drive to it's easier to get my shopping out, and when I'm out shopping I drive into a spot so it's easier to load in my shopping without a car blocking my boot.

MelchiorsMistress · 25/03/2023 22:20

Access to the boot. Reversing into a space to go shopping makes no sense.

prescribingmum · 25/03/2023 22:20

Sparklesocks · 25/03/2023 22:17

Some people don’t feel as comfortable/confident reversing compared to driving forwards

But they need to reverse out which is even more hazardous.

ohfook · 25/03/2023 22:20

I'm not very good at it so I don't bother.

TeenLifeMum · 25/03/2023 22:20

Depends what’s behind you if you reverse in but if it’s other cars, how do you get the trolley by your boot to get the food shop in, or how do I get the dog out of his crate when I’m taking him for a walk?

i happily reverse when appropriate but there are times when it’s not.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/03/2023 22:21

As others say - only go forwards when I need to access the boot. But I'll park in a far corner of the supermarket car park to be able to access boot without having to reverse out if possible. I loath reversing out.

JarByTheDoor · 25/03/2023 22:21

Because major difficulty for future-me doesn't weigh as heavily on my mind as minor difficulty for present-me? I mean, that's her problem Grin

pncr · 25/03/2023 22:22

How do you get to the boot with the trolley if you reverse in?

Florenz · 25/03/2023 22:22

If you're reversing out you're reversing away from the parked cars instead of squeezing in between them while driving backwards.

Sparklesocks · 25/03/2023 22:23

prescribingmum · 25/03/2023 22:20

But they need to reverse out which is even more hazardous.

I can’t speak for why people choose to do it that way, I was just answering OP’s question. But I suppose in some ways it’s easier for some to reverse out into a wider area where you have more room to adjust than into a smaller parking space.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2023 22:23

Our supermarket carpark is two rows so there's always a car behind or in front .
My old car seemed to have an inbuilt Wanker Magnet .
Came back to find a huge 4x4 that had not only poached the space Id left behind me but the front bumper was resting on my fecking tailgate Angry

Treeabovethefire · 25/03/2023 22:23

I agree with you op. The amount of kids that get hit by cars reversing out of driveways across pavements in the morning is unreal. But god forbid drivers have to go through the awkwardness of unloading prams and shopping and feeling safer reversing out, even though they’re risking lives. I may be wrong (and I’m sure I’ll get immediately corrected if I am), but I thought it was the law to reverse into driveways and drive forwards out.
