Asylum seekers costing taxpayers £6mil a day

HoraceCharlie · 25/03/2023 20:20

Firstly- I appreciate this may be an unpopular posting.

I will say I DO agree with people seeking asylum if they genuinely need it- war etc.

But am I in the wrong they should be expected to DO something when they are here?

Provide them with adequate shelter, 3 meals a day, warmth and electricity and vouchers for clothing based on need. Include nappies and formula for babies.

Give free childcare to the children and they have to work on voluntary basis for a set period before they can apply to officially stay

Yanbu. They arrived from France, so they are economic migrants. They should be processed quickly and given work. Public services - sweeping, cleaning, road maintenance. Or skilled work if they can prove qualifications.

The unemployed are expected to work, so why not migrants?

I refer you to my post further back informing people like you who appear incapable of understanding facts that asylum seekers are not required to seek asylum in the first safe country they come to. So the fact that they come from France means absolutely nothing.

We really haven't progressed from the middle ages have we?
Then we shouted "Witch Witch" at someone who stood out and did not contribute except by being a wise woman with herbs and potions. Today we shout "illegal immigrant, scrounger of our taxes"
Its the most heinous reaction of people who feel under threat for some strange reason.

I've seen a pattern under the Tory Government.

There's this circle of people they blame for ills of the UK.

First. Asylum seekers/refugees - It's all asylum seekers fault, they are taking all the money

Second Unemployed - once the hoo-haa about asylum seekers dies down and they haven't actually done anything. Then comes let's all blame the unemployed.
You have all the ministers come out and say things like "the unemployed are lazy, there's loads of jobs, they should work voluntarily for thier benefits" (mmm where have we heard that one)

Third People claiming disability benefits - this one really grinds my piss.

The normal routine of ministers is to to give the impression everyone claiming disability benefits aren't really disabled and they are claiming fraudulently.
At this point we see threads on MN from some troll claiming they *know someone who gets disability benefits, but they're not really disabled because they can walk. Or a variation of that.

Once theyre done with people claiming disability benefits, then we are back to asylum seekers/refugees.
And around, and around and around.....

Also they are not allowed to work legally- I think some of us have mentioned that a few times…

If we had a fairer system for people to seek asylum without having to get here first they would never have had to go to France. So then you could be sure that they really are asylum seekers and not just in it for the cash. Would that make you happy?
Or is what you're really saying that because we're an island surrounded by 'safe' countries we should never have to offer asylum to anyone?

ilovesooty · 25/03/2023 22:07

I think there really are people who believe that because we're an island we should have to take asylum seekers at all.

ilovesooty · 25/03/2023 22:08

shouldn't have to

And just like magic, you appear to prove my post.

Dont tell me, dont tell me.....I bet you know someone who claims disability benefits, but they're not really disabled and they're claiming fraudulently.....right?

PinkRiceKrispies · 25/03/2023 22:14

People have mentioned on here that the asylum seekers can't speak or write English yet on the numerous other threads we have had about this, others have said that they are all our next teachers, doctors etc.
I don't think you are unreasonable to be concerned OP. I am as well. But unfortunately you get called names for saying that which in my opinion is very wrong but there we go.

HoraceCharlie · 25/03/2023 22:16

What I meant was there needs to be some sort of scheme so they can work- employers set aside an amount and “pay” them- but it goes direct for accommodation and other necessities.
Im not talking people being surgeons or teachers- basically manual labour work. And no I’m suggesting slavery- but to avoid language barriers, differences in education etc it’s true to say these sort of jobs do not need skilled workers.

And I’m not saying every asylum seeker is on the scrounge- but a lot of seem to sit around drinking and smoking roll ups all day wearing designer tracksuits I doubt they brought from home.

People have said that they will fill the gaps in the childcare sector too. But you do actually need a relevant qualification to work in a nursery. There are unqualified positions but what the sector needs is qualified and experienced staff. They will need to have strong English and written skills too which not all will have.

HoraceCharlie · 25/03/2023 22:17

Not to mention- I know a number of “asylum seekers” (and I mean this in these terms no others) who are involved in crime- selling replicas, drugs etc. I get a lot of them do it because they are desperate and want to support their families and I try not to judge- but the government needs to pull its finger out.

You can be a qualified teacher or doctor and not speak English.

Yiu can be a qualified accountant and not speak English.
You can be a qualified lawyer and not speak English.

So, yes, they can be our future teachers and doctors. They take English lessons, so that they can find work in the UK.

Free childcare?!

The Government cant properly fund the early years as it is!!!!

Ponoka7 · 25/03/2023 22:35

What 'manual labour work' doesn't need a knowledge of safe working practice, or require you to speak/read English? Nearly every type of employment has basic certificates to pass. Can you imagine the outcry if asylum seekers were given childcare and work opportunities? But from a wider pov, if those jobs need doing, create real jobs for our current population. The logistics would be a nightmare. Transport from the accommodation to the place if work etc. It would cost less to keep the present system.

You say they're sitting around doing nothing but have you not read where PPs have repeated told you that the system forces them to do nothing?

The thing is that any amount of tinkering with the current scheme, be that forcing people to work or whatever else you can think of, won't fix the fundamental problem that there's no legal route to claim asylum and that it takes years to process claims. That's what the government needs to focus on but it's spent so many years telling people that the root of all their problems is immigration it can't do something constructive now because they'd lose votes.

DojaPhat · 25/03/2023 22:51

The tories are still in with a chance at the next election if they can capitalise on hate-mongering asylum seekers and claiming to know what a woman is. Wheel some slogans on 'war on the woke' and jobs a good'un.

ilovesooty · 25/03/2023 22:55

I'm interested to see that I'm not the only one who thinks the Tories have no interest in tackling the situation because they will lose votes if they do.

thanksamillion · 25/03/2023 22:57

I think it's telling that the slogan is 'stop the boats' rather than fix the mess that the asylum system is in. It shifts the blame to the individuals coming rather than the systematic failures of the system.

'Stop the boats' is a nice easy slogan for the hard of thinking who are unable to see the complexities of the situation and unable to understand that it is wilful lack of effort and investment from the Tories which has brought about this situation. Bringing about a pragmatic and humane asylum system isn't a vote winner for the Tories.

That sounds like slave labour. They have no say over where they work and don't receive the money they've earned.

What happens when they are sent to your place of work and you are then made redundant because they are cheaper and have no choice but to work?

The government needs to process the claims quicker and ideally allow them to make the initial claim outside of the UK. They can do preliminary checks, biometrics etc, and then fly them here or put them on the eurotunnel. They then have biometric data for those who have had their claim denied, so if they turn up again, they can be removed back to the country they originally applied from. That would also deter people from crossing unsafely.

murasaki · 25/03/2023 23:07

I genuinely can't see why if you've lodged an asylum claim, why you shouldn't be able to work, it makes no sense, particularly if in a field where there re shortages.

I would rather work in a shit “slave labour” role knowing me/my family have a roof over our heads, 3 meals a day and heat and access to water which lets be honest- is all people need to survive- then run the risk of going out and knowing there’s more of a chance I won’t be coming home that night.

Ive worked shitty jobs, shared bedrooms with virtual strangers, had £2 a day for food (which granted went further then than it does now) so I could save up to be in the career I’m in today.

I get it’s boring sitting round all day, I get it’s stressful but so many come here saying it’s unsafe to be at home, and surely it’s better to be safe and “bored” or working a shitty job then not knowing if you, your partner or children are coming home alive that night.
