Agree there just are no decent words. Fart sounds childish, trump really is childish... and it was on mn that I encountered the awful ‘blowing off’ as a polite term. Sounds utterly filthy to me...

Blowing off sounds decidedly not about farting.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 25/03/2023 21:52

Thanks to an old, long-forgotten cartoon quote, the accepted form of announcement in our house is to turn and glare at your own rear end whilst saying “Ex-CUSE my bottom” in the manner of the Dowager Duchess of Downton noticing a second footman wearing the wrong cravat at a ball.

baconisgoodforme · 25/03/2023 21:55

We've got away with my kids calling them 'pumps' for 5 years but now my oldest has picked up 'fart' from school. I'm definitely going to try and steer them towards using the 'bum puff' as mentioned on this thread!

FabFitFifties · 25/03/2023 21:56

Pump, f.. t was swearing when I grew up. Can't bear that son says f.. t. I tell him I do delicate lady fluff's. 😂 Love puff/fluff means something very different 🤣

ouchmyteeth · 25/03/2023 22:02

It’s a Foxtrot alpha Romeo tango in my house

LakeTiticaca · 25/03/2023 22:02

As a teenager I had a friend whose mother was like Hyacinth Bucket.
We were sat in their "drawing room" and one of friends brothers let one rip. Mother entered seconds later and asked very brusquely "who's made a smell?"
I really struggled to contain my laughter at that 😂 🤣

SunnieShine · 25/03/2023 22:09

Nobody else say "chuff"?

SunnieShine · 25/03/2023 22:10

Anewuser · 25/03/2023 19:56

Trouser cough

Excellent!

I sometimes use chuff as slang for female genitals.

I may be crude af.

In Scotland to pump means to fuck. So I always find that one quite coarse.

<dabs embroidered handkerchief to brow>

Haha yes! I can’t associate it with anything except that.

“Want pumped?”
“Dave pumped Sharon in the toilet last night”

Definitely better than using it to describe a fart. 😂

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 22:15

chuff is definitely a fanny, as in 'colder than a penguin's chuff'

Bree82 · 25/03/2023 22:19

I wasn’t allowed to say fat growing up. It was like a swear lol.
we had to say pumps but that sounds so weird now and come to think of it I don’t like any word for it 😂 they all sound too weird lol

Goodread1 · 25/03/2023 22:19

Cutting the 🧀 Cheese

Blowing a 🎺 Trumpet

Oh dear...this had me laughing so much I nearly did said 'blowing off'. My Gran used to use this term. Still laughing.

Teaseall · 25/03/2023 22:22

Musical hum anyone?

The fart is a volcanic eruption,
It comes from the mountain of bums,
It rolls down the valley of trousers,
and comes out in musical hums. 😁

It was a boff in our house growing up.

Goodread1 · 25/03/2023 22:23

I don't have a problem with the word Fart in open minded friends circles or within my family,

But I wouldn't use this colloquial terminology

With people some ones who would percieve as offensive and common though

I know some family members would definitely have a problem with that word and would find it extremely common and offensive 🙄 too

I’ve never heard of a boff 😂
I feel like I need a new word to teach LO… I’m not keen on any of the words we had to use for certain things growing up lol

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 22:28

but wouldn't those people who'd be offended by the word fart probably be offended by any mention of wind, @Goodread1? They would probably stare tensely at the ceiling if one squeaked out in their company.

SparkleSpangle · 25/03/2023 22:31

We we a bit posh so the nanny said we made "poo smell" I never liked it. My children fart! they think it's hilarious!!

Teaseall · 25/03/2023 22:32

@Bree82 it was shorthand for blow off 😂

crumpet · 25/03/2023 22:34

A fart is a fart. Anything else comes across as Hyacinth Bucket trying to be genteel

Paperexcelandpens · 25/03/2023 22:38

It's an awful word and not allowed in our house.

MegsLevante · 25/03/2023 22:43

Toottooot · 25/03/2023 20:13

Probably never shites either 🙄

My nephew taught DD the word Shart last week. Delightful and probably very offensive to OP.

In terms of just farts, I always thought fart was the adult word and pump or speaker were the children’s words?

MegsLevante · 25/03/2023 22:43
  • squeaker not speaker

I never so much as allude to them .. let alone engage in that kind of activity ...

But you’ve just dedicated a whole thread to them! 🤣
