Does butter go on a cheese platter?

PIL are from the Sth East. They put on a lovely meal. The cheese platter came out- crackers, various cheeses, charcuterie, grapes, chutneys and quince paste- plus a bowl of butter. They both liberally, lathered butter on their crackers- ensuring it went right to the edge- then added chutney and cheese etc.

I've never noticed butter on a cheese platter before, nor would I ever consider it was needed. Each to their own, but AIBU?

YABU- of course you need butter
YANBU- there is no need for it in addition to the other toppings

Butter is always welcome.

Definitely butter on crackers, you try eating a dry cracker on its own or with just a piece of cheddar.
