Does butter go on a cheese platter?

PIL are from the Sth East. They put on a lovely meal. The cheese platter came out- crackers, various cheeses, charcuterie, grapes, chutneys and quince paste- plus a bowl of butter. They both liberally, lathered butter on their crackers- ensuring it went right to the edge- then added chutney and cheese etc.

I've never noticed butter on a cheese platter before, nor would I ever consider it was needed. Each to their own, but AIBU?

YABU- of course you need butter
YANBU- there is no need for it in addition to the other toppings

Does it matter if you ‘didn’t think it was needed’? They wanted butter on their crackers, why are you making it such an issue?

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 21:26

Wouldn't add butter to a cheese board myself but have seen it done. Maybe the in laws have been influenced by that (quite strange really) trend for butter boards that was all over social media.

Fucks a "cheese platter?"

It's a cheeseboard and yes to the butter

avocadotofu · 25/03/2023 21:26

No.

AppallinglyReheated · 25/03/2023 21:42

Some crackers need butter, others have enough of a fat content that they don't.

It's not just about the taste, its about the 'mouthfeel' - no one wants a dry mouth full of crumbly dry cracker even if theres cheese in there too!

Tratjymp · 25/03/2023 21:43

Maybe, if it's rancid.

ArdeteiMasazxu · 25/03/2023 21:45

no one is making you eat butter. if people like butter they can. I like it, but wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone not having it because I'm not judgy like that. making a thread about someone else's food choices says a lot more about you than about them.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/03/2023 21:46

Presumably they didn.t force you to have butter if you didn't want it?
They clearly prefer to have it - why be concerned?

CC4712 · 25/03/2023 21:49

Thanks everyone. I've clearly been doing my guests a disservice by never adding butter as an option to a cheese board before! I've never seen it in a restaurant, nor it at other friends houses- hence I asked. I'll be adding it in future for those that want it though. 😊

Yes, butter, always !

AuntieObnoxious · 25/03/2023 22:23

I’m in the midlands & I love butter & cheese on a cracker but when in Australia they couldn’t believe that people would eat crackers & cheese with butter.

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 22:39

I think an oatcake might benefit from some butter as they're so dense and chewy but I prefer a crisp and salty cracker with my cheese and I don't think they'd be improved by the addition of butter.

Bouledeneige · 25/03/2023 23:19

I love a cheese board. Stayed with a Duke in their stately home. Yes to butter... So dry.

You're being fake snobby.

HerRoyalNotness · 25/03/2023 23:21

No to the butter. Yes to leaving the cheese out for an hour or two so it softens up and spreads a bit like butter

Capricornone1 · 25/03/2023 23:23

Nope to butter on a cheeseboard how common lol

ClassicLib · 25/03/2023 23:23

More butter is always a good thing.

UrsulaPandress · 25/03/2023 23:26

Butter. Butter. Butter.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 26/03/2023 00:00

Of course a cheese board needs butter with it. It sticks the cheese to the cracker (so optional with a soft cheese, but essential for hard).

Crinkle77 · 26/03/2023 00:03

I always have butter with a hard cheese. Helps the cheese to stick to the cracker and they can be a bit dry without it.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/03/2023 00:08

I tend to think you don't need butter for a soft or semi soft cheese, but it works well with a hard cheese.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 19:42

Maybe if it was just your basic cheddar and crackers. Not to sully posh cheese.

My sister however would want butter, but then she also has butter under peanut butter and under cream and jam on a scone. Psycho. Thin as a rake tho.

I also have butter with PB and butter on a scone Blush

Viviennemary · 26/03/2023 00:45

Of course butter should be available. Some biscuits are too dry without butter.

Shulk · 26/03/2023 00:50

It’s my go-to desert and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it served with butter?

Clearly I’m in the minority, based on the voting, but I’d also think it unnecessary and that it would spoil the cheese a bit (for me, at least).

Tourmalines · 26/03/2023 00:53

NO, I never put butter on a cheese platter . Not that I would turn my nose up at it, but it’s never been a thing.

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/03/2023 02:03

I’ve never seen butter offered on a cheese tray but that doesn’t mean that it is unreasonable to do so. If you like it, eat it!
