Busted

Just heard What I Go To School For on R2 and am a bit surprised that it's still allowed to be played on the radio? Surely if it was a female artist singing about a secondary school pupil bonking her male teacher, it'd be banished from the airwaves?

If Busted were MN regulars, the last verse would have included the words "and everybody on the bus clapped" Grin

🤣

Obviously it didn't actually happen in real life, the song is just a story, but let's be clear, it's a story about statutory rape.

My god in heaven…

I was a teacher. I’m pretty sure the kids I taught were too young to have ever listened to Busted (or the song by the Police, ABBA or Elton John). Despite that, I still had my arse grabbed by Y11 boys, had notes left, overheard comments and bad comments made about me to other members of staff. I really don’t think a song about a boy fancying his teacher which culminates in him (gasp) riding in her car is playing much of a role in teenagers sexualisation of teachers (and, trust me, the teenage girls are just as inappropriate with male teachers).

Always bothered me That in 1000 years it was only the great great great granddaughter

He actually spoke about this, I heard recently from Richard Osman, that when Matt was writing the lyrics he decided to take into account the increased life expectancy and the increased age of parenthood…or, at least, that’s the cover he’s pedalling. He’s a very successful songwriter now actually

I actually agree with the OP. The final verse is that they get together and drive off into the sunset together, other posters have said this is just his fantasy but it doesn't actually say that in the song, and it's not like this has never happened before (the teacher who ran off with a student to France!).

Obviously it didn't actually happen in real life, the song is just a story, but let's be clear, it's a story about statutory rape. Someone above has quoted a Nicki Minaj song and yes that's far far more graphic but it's a graphic song about consensual sex between two adults.

Do you know what rape is? Rape is the penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth with a penis. Could you clarify which part of the song indicates that there was penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth with a penis? Stop throwing around terms you don’t understand. And, FFS, all rape is statutory.

WouldAnIdiotDoThat · 23/03/2023 13:39

Very aggressive and rude reply.

In common law jurisdictions, statutory rape is nonforcible sexual activity in which one of the individuals is below the age of consent.

The first thing that comes up on Google. You know what I meant, everyone knows what I meant. Ok the song doesn't specify that they had sexual activity but it's implied, the song ends with them starting a relationship.

Not that any of this really matters because it's just a (admittedly very catchy) song, I just think it's a bit distasteful but it's not going to keep me up at night. No need for such aggressive posts over a pop song that's about twenty years old.

Have a day off Susan. Let bangers be bangers.

I'm kind of surprised that pointing out that student teacher relationships are wrong has made some posters so angry.

I don't think a single person is angry, and especially not about that...

I'd always assumed an implied "....." between the greats but it appears I'm giving credit that's not due.
As for Mcfly I've always thought the second verse of Saturday Night was very dodgy.

I wasn’t angry. I did roll my eyes that you think sitting in a car is the same as being raped. No one was angry about the prospect of student/teacher relationships being wrong.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 23/03/2023 08:51

Meh, it’s nothing new, think of the police and don’t stand so close to me.

Or every breath you take <shudder >

Op Busted were a boy band for skaterkids singing about fancying their teacher nothing else.
