Just heard What I Go To School For on R2 and am a bit surprised that it's still allowed to be played on the radio? Surely if it was a female artist singing about a secondary school pupil bonking her male teacher, it'd be banished from the airwaves?

OP posts:
transformandriseup · 23/03/2023 09:44

Even when the boy does get together at the end of the song it still plays out like a fantasy and something boys would daydream about during school.

I couldn't really get worked up about this one.

ComeTheFuckOnBridgett · 23/03/2023 09:49

I wouldn't get bothered over it. There are plenty of songs that have 'bad' meanings in them and are played.

AngeloMysterioso · 23/03/2023 09:51

Jesus, aren’t we allowed to have anything remotely controversial anymore? Half the books I loved as a child have been sanitised beyond all recognition and now you want to take a bloody Busted song off the radio?! When shite like that fucking WAP song came out just a year or two back?

Leave it be, for Christ’s sake…

Also Sleeping With The Light On is an absolute belter.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/03/2023 09:52

I think the same about the song Year 3000. Weird lyrics 🤣

bizzywiththefizzy · 23/03/2023 09:55

I really wouldn't worry about it . I bought this for my young sons Christmas and he thought it was funny ha ha .

Didn't he go on to become President of France?

😀

Aside from this specific song, I don't get the general thought process that, because there are worse examples of something, that makes the still possibly controversial original thing automatically OK.

We don't say that punching random strangers in the street is 'nothing to get worked up about', just because some people get murdered.

A lighthearted pop song is a bit different to punching a stranger in the face.

LakeTiticaca · 23/03/2023 10:25

Christ on a bike it's a song!
Songs have been crammed with dodgy lyrics for a very long time. Some more subtle than others. I'm old enough to remember Je T'aime, the filthy French song banned by the BBC ( Always guaranteed a big hit if Auntie banned it!!)
Donna Summer's Love to love you baby was basically Donna pleasuring herself over a Giorgio Moroder sound track 😉
Lots of stuff over the years that would have Mary Whitehouses bloomers in a twist.
Did we love it? Course we did!! 😅

GoodChat · 23/03/2023 10:27

I think they should bring back this classic

MarriedMama23 · 23/03/2023 10:29

Much tamer than these days! Super Freaky Girl by Nicki Minaj is way worse!

  • I can lick it, I can ride it while you slippin' and slidin' I can do all them little tricks and keep the dick up inside it You can smack it, you can grip it, you can go down and kiss it And every time he leave me 'lone, he always tell me he miss it*
LakeTiticaca · 23/03/2023 10:31

@MarriedMama23 Mary Whitehouse would be spinning in her grave!!😉

WouldAnIdiotDoThat · 23/03/2023 10:39

I actually agree with the OP. The final verse is that they get together and drive off into the sunset together, other posters have said this is just his fantasy but it doesn't actually say that in the song, and it's not like this has never happened before (the teacher who ran off with a student to France!).

Obviously it didn't actually happen in real life, the song is just a story, but let's be clear, it's a story about statutory rape. Someone above has quoted a Nicki Minaj song and yes that's far far more graphic but it's a graphic song about consensual sex between two adults.

Always bothered me That in 1000 years it was only the great great great granddaughter

Regularsizedrudy · 23/03/2023 10:44

What about that Abba song about getting off with the teacher?

chazabella · 23/03/2023 10:45

Yabu, and a lot of people take it out of context like pp have said its about school boys liking theor teacher. I hope you don't listen to air hostess. Iv just had their music playing in my house with my kids about and yes I will be going on their tour

I was just thinking about that one!! Although she only kissed him......didn't she? 😁😁
Then there was Abbas "Does your mother know", although he was trying to let her down gently 😉

Women have 3 boobs and humans live underwater...but 'not much has changed'.

🤔 That seems like a pretty fucking massive change to me mate.

FarmGirl78 · 23/03/2023 11:21

Of all the songs to get knickers in a twist about you pick this one?? Stop clutching your pearls and unclench.

Flamingogirl08 · 23/03/2023 11:30

The end verse is clearly a fantasy. No it doesn't explicitly say it because it's a song. It's like art or poetry you interprete it. In my opinion it is a very harmless song. Honestly if we go down the route of banning old Busted songs there is just no hope for us! 🤣

I always thought the last bit was about a fantasy too, like pp says, it's about interpretation, or do people think because of a 15(?) Year old Busted song, teachers are going to start getting off with teen boys because they play a song about it?
There's a lot more wrong there than a Busted song if that happens!

I'm hoping I'll get tickets to the tour - loved Busted!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/03/2023 11:57

A lighthearted pop song is a bit different to punching a stranger in the face.

Of course, but my point was that, in any scenario - be it a song, assault, crime or whatever - it's not a reasonable excuse to dismiss a concern, purely because more serious concerns also exist along the same vein.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/03/2023 11:58

If Busted were MN regulars, the last verse would have included the words "and everybody on the bus clapped" Grin
