If you were having a sandwich/sandwiches…

For lunch, how many would you have/how many pieces of bread?
I came home at lunch from work today, I’d had no breakfast as rushing in the morning, so was hungry and had what I’d call two sandwiches, four slices of wholemeal, cereal type bread with tuna salad on. My mum was over and was saying how a sandwich at lunch was to her just two pieces of bread and a filling.
Mum is v slim, naturally but also doesn’t eat/want to eat much. I admittedly do need to lose a bit of weight, but I was hungry and aside from an apple afterwards, I don’t then eat until dinner.
Is this excessive/not that normal?
How many would you have for your lunch?

I would say that was excessive. A sandwich is two slices of bread and filling, sane as what you would get if you bought a sandwich from a shop. I honestly don’t think I have ever seen anyone buy two packets of sandwiches or eat four slices of bread in one sitting. I also would not double up on lunch because I miss breakfast, it is irrelevant.

As a 6ft 14st male I’d have two slices, well filled with a little fruit and standard bag of crisps. This would be sufficient to keep me satisfied until dinner regardless of breakfast.

Sorry, it sounds a bit greedy to me to think you needed/deserved 4 slices (so a double portion) and then eat it in front of your mother. And then feel the need to discuss it on mumsnet because she seemed a bit shocked about the volume you ate.

What a weirdo you sound.

SquigglePigs · 22/03/2023 06:12

I'd have two with a filling but then other things with it to make it "lunch" - a cup of vegetable soup or a hard boiled egg and crisps or half a scotch egg etc. If it was just a sandwich then I'd have three but I don't particular love sandwiches so would rather have less sandwich with more other things. DH would have three or four most likely unless he was having a bowl of soup with it.

Oblomov23 · 22/03/2023 06:33

Two slices. The apple or the youghurt is not relevant. 2 or 4 is the issue here. A very hungry teen would have 4, rarely.

My downfall is bread 😫I need to cut back, it’s just so simple and quick to make a sandwich…I don’t have the crisps & choc with it though…wish I could 😁

I almost never have sandwiches for lunch and see it as a disappointment/failure to plan/victim of circumstances if that's what I end up having (out for work and no time for anything better for example).

I don't particularly enjoy them or find them filling - two slices of bread when I hadn't had breakfast definitely wouldn't be enough.

So I almost always have leftover dinner instead, or something batch cooked and reheated, or something like a cheese omelette, perhaps with one slice of toast, which doesn't really take any longer than a sandwich to make.

It's probably healthier and lower calorie too as it's generally a smallish portion of meat/fish/veg/pulses etc. I find it much easier to eat better/less bread etc if I have 2-3 smallish cooked meals a day, most of which are batch cooked/reheated leftovers or quick things like omelettes or soup.

If I do have sandwiches by choice, it's usually egg sandwiches for breakfast if I'm going out early. I'll take them with me to eat later. On the amount, it's usually 3 slices of bread and 2 boiled eggs made into egg mayo, because that's the right amount for me as I tend to eat more for breakfast and lunch and hardly anything for dinner by most people's standards because that's what works for me.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 22/03/2023 07:03

One sandwich is 2 slices of bread, which is what I would normally eat if I was having a sandwich for lunch, which I don’t very often although I often put stuff on toast which I guess is the same thing and again, 2 slices of bread.

If I was starving I might have two sandwiches if there was nothing else to go with it if it was a gym day when I generally try to eat more calories. On another day I would probably have a snack mid afternoon but wouldn’t add anything else to my lunch

Soooootired77 · 21/03/2023 23:33

I didn’t eat it because I felt I *Deserved it, I was hungry, tired and had barely any time (or enthusiasm) to make something different today.
Admittedly, it did feel weird eating that amount of bread in one sitting 😔need to banish the bread

No you don't.

2 slices of bread, filling. Sometimes crisps on the side.. sometimes some carrot and cucumber sticks. That’s it then until dinner really.

You obviously never met in me on day out...

Of course many people fucking eat more than 2 slices often.

No one here ever heard of club sandwich? Or triple decker? A lots of people actually otherwise no one would be selling it.

SunshineAndMonsteras · 22/03/2023 07:22

And like fuck does everyone have just 1 toastie😂 (2 triangles)

You’re in the tiny majority if you think a normal sandwich is made with one piece of bread.

Have you done a survey?

If you cut a sandwich in half you get two smaller sandwiches. A sandwich is not a standard size.

Why can't you?

It's surprising how quickly the calories in a second sandwich between the bread, butter (if you use it, and filling will add up. Having one sandwich and a packet of crisps would almost certainly be less.

Will be fun when tesco et al gets whoff of people claiming it's two samdwiches so they start selling halves separatly with a bit of extra on pricetag😂

EatYourVegetables · 22/03/2023 07:37

It’s hilarious to me that people are sanctimonious about “oh god no only one sandwich” and then having crisps on the side. Crisps are junk food and a treat, I don’t understand this obsession with eating them every bloody day as a part of normal lunch. OP, it’s way better for you to eat an extra sandwich if you’re hungry than crisps at lunch and then a chocolate mid afternoon.

And your Mum’s “natural” slimness sounds like disordered eating, if she needs to obsessively comment on your eating.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 22/03/2023 07:39

It's pointless trying to compare how many sandwiches you'd have to how many other people on the thread would have.

If your overall diet is healthy and you are not over-eating on the whole, four slices is fine.

Richhandcream · 22/03/2023 07:44

Obviously depends on how hungry I was. Usually just two slices, but if I'm hungry then I'd add a slice or two. I'm not a great one for crisps on the side. These threads always make me laugh "Oh, two slices of the finest thin wholemeal bread with just a couple of slivers of cucumber and I'd be stuffed. I couldn't possibly eat any more than that". 😂

AuntieMarys · 22/03/2023 08:00

Two pieces of bread for me. No butter just mayo. No crisps. Maybe a yoghurt after.
I do 16/8 3 or 4 days a week so don't eat from 7pm till about 12 noon.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/03/2023 08:21

Usually 2 slices, but sometimes 4 but then I cut the crusts off to show that I'm not a greedy pig. 🐷

Each sandwich has to be cut into 4 triangles (isosceles, of course).

Hi reddit. 👋

Makingamess4212 · 22/03/2023 08:26

We all know a sandwich is two slices + filling. But if I was staving, or hadn't ate properly I could eat 2 or 3 sandwiches, easy. With you on this one.

Boringcookingquestion · 22/03/2023 08:30

I’d only have one sandwich for lunch (two pieces of bread) but then would happily snack on other things. I think I just have a mental block on what a sandwich serving ‘should’ be. I can’t see any issue In having two sandwiches if you’re hungry though (and probably healthier than reaching for biscuits later on!).

JustDanceAddict · 22/03/2023 08:31

Two slices of bread and filling. If v small loaf then maybe 3. I used to make two rounds until someone at uni pointed out to me how that was too much bread 😆
You could get rolls or bagels which are more filling - but if you’re happy with 4 slices and aren’t eating crap then it’s better than a chocolate bar for afters!!

mrsbyers · 22/03/2023 08:33

I honestly don’t think eating like that would give your body time to register it was still hungry and seems as such excessive - eat the first sandwich and if still really hungry a second a while later is fine but feels like gorging to eat both quickly
