If you were having a sandwich/sandwiches…

For lunch, how many would you have/how many pieces of bread?
I came home at lunch from work today, I’d had no breakfast as rushing in the morning, so was hungry and had what I’d call two sandwiches, four slices of wholemeal, cereal type bread with tuna salad on. My mum was over and was saying how a sandwich at lunch was to her just two pieces of bread and a filling.
Mum is v slim, naturally but also doesn’t eat/want to eat much. I admittedly do need to lose a bit of weight, but I was hungry and aside from an apple afterwards, I don’t then eat until dinner.
Is this excessive/not that normal?
How many would you have for your lunch?

2 slices of bread plus filling. And I never eat breakfast (unless on hols).

burnoutbabe · 21/03/2023 23:27

A sandwich would be 2 bits of bread for me. Same if having a toasty.

However if I have toast for lunch, then it's 4 bits of bread! No idea why.

Soooootired77 · 21/03/2023 23:33

I didn’t eat it because I felt I *Deserved it, I was hungry, tired and had barely any time (or enthusiasm) to make something different today.
Admittedly, it did feel weird eating that amount of bread in one sitting 😔need to banish the bread

I do intermittent fasting so I don’t eat breakfast. Today I had a protein yoghurt for lunch and a tuna sandwich and salad for dinner, and I still only had two slices of bread. Four is a bit mad OP. Sorry. And almost certainly as many if not more calories than the crisps and chocolate you think you have to avoid! Bread is the devil. High in calories, low in goodness or satiety.

Diplidocus4 · 21/03/2023 23:36

A round of sandwiches is 2 slices of bread and filling ( IMO )
Nothing wrong with having 2 x rounds of sandwiches as you haven't had breakfast ?

EnthENd · 21/03/2023 23:41

Team four slices here. But then I'm not exactly slim, so...

Sometimes three if that works with how much bread or filling is in the house, but two slices wouldn't be enough.

And yes a sandwich in a supermarket "meal deal" is just two slices. But they tend to be more elaborately filled than I can be bothered to make myself, and depending on my snack and drink choice I can easily see it being about equal cals-wise. Usually more veg in the supermarket stuff though!

@Longsight2019 Sorry, it sounds a bit greedy to me to think you needed/deserved 4 slices (so a double portion) and then eat it in front of your mother. And then feel the need to discuss it on mumsnet because she seemed a bit shocked about the volume you ate.

She needed double sandwiches because she had missed breakfast. And was extra hungry. She chose this instead of something nearly everyone on this thread has mentioned...including yourself....1 x round of sandwiches and a packet of crisps. She didn't consider whether she 'desrved' it. What an odd choice of words...deserved....Also, what on earth is the relavence of eating it in front of her mother got to do with it? She's not shooting up heroin! I'd say it's you that has a wierd relationship with food if you feel eating 2 sandwiches is a deviant activity that should be done in secret...if at all.

Needed? No, chose, justified even, due to not eating breakfast. Should we have two dinners if we don’t eat lunch too?

A bag of crisps typically is far less than two slices of filled wholemeal and far, far bulkier, especially when eaten with a duplicate.

It’s clear the consensus here is that the lunch was a greedy move, and that the OP’s mum would agree with us.

BadNomad · 21/03/2023 23:51

Have a crisp sandwich.

SocksAndTheCity · 21/03/2023 23:52

You've made your consensus clear, yes @Longsight2019 . Other people have just answered the question for themselves instead of judging the OP (including me, and I would have two sandwiches in the unlikely event that I'd skipped breakfast). And if I was hungry after dinner/before bed I'd have something else, yes.

Calling another adult 'greedy' is juvenile and twattish, and assuming that adult was eating because they were hungry, not even accurate.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 21/03/2023 23:54

I’m adore bread but even I would only usually have 2 slices as a sandwich for lunch. I’ve very occasionally had an extra half a sandwich (one slice of bread) if I’m really hungry but feel so guilty that I don’t usually bother.

bucketloadofcats · 21/03/2023 23:56

2 slices make a sandwich. However, there are three meals in the day, and if you've missed one, you can eat together if you want.

It wasn't a greedy lunch, it was breakfast and lunch combined.

There are as many or as few as you want in a day.

pinkpotatoez · 22/03/2023 00:13

Two slices and filling cut in half, packet of crisps and a piece of fruit sometimes a bar of some sort too if I haven't had breakfast.

Gstr · 22/03/2023 00:18

4, tbh I could eat far more as I eat gluten free bread which id the size of a postage stampx but I manage to restrain myself from having more 😂 and tend to have something on the side, leftover veg dishes or salad etc

MonumentalLentil · 22/03/2023 00:46

When I was working long days and full time I didn't really get much lunch so would often make sandwiches for dinner. It would often be 2 rounds (4 slices of bread) but the filling would be a lot of salad with salad cream, and sometimes with cheddar. Salad would always fall out as there was so much of it.

It was always soggy white sliced bread.

If I had lunch it would usually only be one round as I didn't have time for more. Otherwise a salad, with bread.

Rebel2 · 22/03/2023 00:49

I don't eat breakfast
Lunch would be two pieces of bread plus filling, usually have 100 cal type bag of crisps or a yoghurt, and a mini choc bar or banana

MonumentalLentil · 22/03/2023 00:51

I was also called greedy by a poster on here once. Someone that only ever has one peanut for lunch I expect.

I was so greedy I was a small size 10 (before the vanity sizing, when a 10 was consistent in all brands and designers).

So, if you think someone with a healthy appetite is greedy, go and shove your single peanut where the sun don't shine.

mackthepony · 22/03/2023 00:52

I had a two slice sandwich, soup, greek yogurt, grapes and apple compote for lunch.

Four slices isn't excessive, you didn't have breakfast

Did you eat your husbands birthday chocolates?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 22/03/2023 00:58

I got a bit over excited at lunch time. Went into Greggs to get a sandwich and saw the vegetable bakes had returned so I had 2 of them. 🐷🐷🐷

Robin233 · 22/03/2023 01:12

Always 4 slices of bread abs a bag of crips- and I'm slim

SheSaidHummingbird · 22/03/2023 02:13

Soooootired77 Stop bread shaming yourself. You were hungry, so you had some food. Some days we consumre more calories, others days we consume less. If you want to lose weight, go to your doctor and take advice. Please don't feel guilt or shame based on comments from your mother, or anyone on these boards.

Weatherwax13 · 22/03/2023 03:41

Meh. You were really hungry. Better two sandwiches than crisps and chocolate surely. I think so many women (definitely including myself!!) have a really dreadful relationship with food mostly through no fault of their own.
Judge your own appetite and health and eat what feels right for you.

I've lost a fair bit of weight recently and it's really helped me see how weird I am about food, and what the origin of that is.
Very freeing. I can get a bit evangelical about it!

SavedByDogs · 22/03/2023 04:16

I don’t eat much bread, but if I’d had no breakfast, I could eat 2 sandwiches, as in 4 slices of bread. When I do have a sandwich, I often have 3 slices of bread or 2 slices and some soup or some nuts/seeds and a yogurt and that’s when I’ve had breakfast. I don’t find bread that filling though, that’s why I don’t eat it very often.

You were hungry, you ate what you needed. People on here are weird about food.

WandaWonder · 22/03/2023 04:20

A sandwich is 2 slices of bread and filling

A lunch can be whatever but gosh you are really overthinking this a bit
