To not want to give up Narnia?

dobermeister · 21/03/2023 10:48

When DD was a toddler I created a Narnia in her room. Basically there was an adjoining room from her bedroom, I removed the door, put a wardrobe on either side, and made the other room into Narnia. It has snowy woodland painted on all the walls, a bookcase, cushions on the floor and is basically a “snug”. DD adores in still and is always in there.

DH now wants to get rid of Narnia and turn it into a storeroom for DDs stuff. This is totally unnecessary as we have 3 other spare bedrooms as well as a cellar.

DD wants to keep Narnia. DH thinks it’s babyish and a waste of space as her bedroom is already a big room.

His issue is that his kids don’t have stuff like this at their mum’s house but that’s not mine or DDs fault is it?!

What do you think?

I am unspeakably jealous ! I wish I had a Narnia to retreat to

Depends how old she is.

It doesn't matter at all how old she is.

Why should something special that both she and her mother love be changed to suit a man who, going off the OP(?) isn't even her father - just because HIS kids don't have something like this. Plus they have other spare rooms so completely unnecessary.

He sounds very peevish. Tell him to fuck off.

DPotter · 21/03/2023 14:36

If you lived in a 2 up, 2 down with 2 adults, 5 kids and a bouncy golden retriever, with no wardrobe space, I might agree with him, but if everyone has a double bedroom, leave well alone.

I would love a Narnia room.

I second / third the vote for your cellar to be made into Mordor for your DH though - what a joyless man

Justmeandthedog1 · 21/03/2023 14:39

I used to have two adjoining bedrooms ( as an adult) and I so wish I’d done something like this instead of having a boring office desk, PC etc… in the smaller room. I feel I’ve missed out big time 😢
Your dd will let you know when she’s outgrown it, if she ever does.

Depends how old she is.

No it doesn't.

If there's no need to get rid and she wants ti keep it then it doesn't matter if she's 6 or 16.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/03/2023 14:53

He sounds resentful. I'd just tell him that it's staying as it is until DD no longer wants it or wants to change it to something else as she gets older. He can't argue for it with storage needs if you have other storage space so it's all a bit moot.

It's unclear to me how you can be showing off if nobody ever even sees it - how often realistically are people going into a side room in a childs bedroom. Lovely though it sounds, that's realistically what we're talking about here. He'll have to get over it.

Throckmorton · 21/03/2023 14:53

Anyone using the word "babyish" about something is usually a red flag- it's used to denigrate something and why would you denigrate something someone enjoys? Sounds like he wants to get rid of it just to spite you or your DD?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/03/2023 14:55

It might even add value to the house!

I'm 42 and I would love it now.

Just me?

FishChipsMushyPeas · 21/03/2023 14:59

It's make a great snug for her and her pals when she is a teenager too. Keep em out of the living room! 😂

Tucci · 21/03/2023 15:00

Save Narnia!

I don’t like the sound of your DH at all.

saveforthat · 21/03/2023 15:01

When we moved into a house a few years ago, the smallest room had been lovingly hand painted with a little mermaid scene. It was fantastic and I was really sad when we eventually painted it over. Narnia sounds fantastic. WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS?

Lets start a movement! If we get enough signatures we can get it debated in parliament.

Once a king or queen in Narnia always a king or queen in Narnia!

UnaOfStormhold · 21/03/2023 15:07

PS, for anyone within reach of Oxford, the story museum is lovely - it has a Narnia room and a Pooh sticks room among many others.

Choconut · 21/03/2023 15:17

I'd get rid of him before I got rid of that amazing sounding space. It sounds like a safe, soothing space which is something wonderful that anyone of any age should be allowed to keep.

See I am jealous about that now. I dont get jealous normally but now its twice in one day!

I dream of a private space with filled book shelves and somewhere really cosy to sit and read in peace. A private little reading nook. Alas I have no space but the dream remains.

ChristmasCakeAndGin · 21/03/2023 15:20

You sound very creative. Narnia room sounds lovely and given the reaction on this thread - no-one is ever too old for a Narnia room 😍

Giggorata · 21/03/2023 15:23

No way would I ever get rid of Narnia.
Might get rid of the joy sucking bloke, though.

2bazookas · 21/03/2023 15:24

I hope the White Witch freezes DH's balls off.

jackstini · 21/03/2023 15:35

Definitely keep Narnia!!
It sounds amazing and I have seen an adult 'study/library' version on TikTok or something so she can always update it

No urgency to change if you have plenty of space

Your H sounds a bit joyless tbh

HurryShadow · 21/03/2023 15:36

Please tell me you name changed for this thread, so you can post photos and preserve your anonymity!

This sounds amazing and once your DD has grown out of it, swap rooms with her so you can have it!

NalafromtheLionKing · 21/03/2023 15:50

Keep it OP, don’t even think twice.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 21/03/2023 15:52

Get rid of it when your DD asks you to, and not until then. I see you've got 99% agreement.

NailsForBreakfastTacksForSnacks · 21/03/2023 15:56

Even when DD feels she is too old for Narnia (and to be clear, there is no age thats too old for Narnia), I'm sure she'd enjoy having a secret room, I know I would.
