How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

I’m married to a vegetarian so my meat consumption is much lower than it ever used to be as there is no way I’m making two different meals every evening.

I might buy a shop bought pie, say a cheese and onion or vegetable one for Dh and I’ll enjoy a meat one, but generally speaking I eat the same as my husband.

now I only eat meat when we dine out which is at least twice a week, but I do sometimes announce “I need meat, we’re going over to our local gastro pub for a steak” and he will enjoy a vegetarian pasta dish..

So to answer you, probably twice a week I will enjoy meat. But there’s no resentment, I also have high cholesterol so I think veggie meals are better for me as long as I’m not eating fried foods.

Cholesterol is more likely due to excessive carbs common in veggie/vegan diets rather than meat.

Twice a day generally. I know a vegan and a vegetarian and they both have the same horrid pale colour to their complexion and dark circles around their eyes, they look quite ill. Meat should be part of a balanced diet, just don't hammer the red meat.

This is how my DS looked when he was a young child 😔. We weren't veggie, just in poverty so eating very little meat, mostly veg, legumes and grains.

Yep I'll keep eating my steak and totally ignoring sanctimonious vegans and vegetarians!

Brokendaughter · 21/03/2023 10:50

I would say 80- 90% of meals other than breakfast contain either meat or fish.

Doesn't tend to be a large portion though (e.g. one slice of bacon each, chopped up in an omelette with avocado & mushrooms with a salad).

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/03/2023 10:51

Don’t eat red meat. Poultry maybe once a week. Lots of fish.

Netcam · 21/03/2023 10:52

Meat once a week, fish once or occasionally twice a week. All other meals are veggie, we eat a lot of beans and lentils.

gogohmm · 21/03/2023 11:03

Most days - fish 1-2 times a week, red meat (beef/lamb) 1-2 times and the rest of the week chicken or pork.

KnittedCardi · 21/03/2023 11:12

Every day. We eat everything. All sorts of meat, poultry, fish, seafood. Along with salads and veggies. What I don't eat much of is carbs as in rice or pasta or potatoes, or anything beany. They all give me gas. So almost the very opposite of what a vegan would eat. I also love eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt.

I am a carnivorous mammal, who like my fellows, eats other mammals and fish.

Titsywoo · 21/03/2023 11:15

Most days I eat some meat or fish but not really red meat. I either eat chicken or salmon.

BadLad · 21/03/2023 11:17

Every day here. Meat or fish is always the main component of every meal except breakfast. It’s far too delicious to give up (for me).

@GCWorkNightmare please don’t spread misinformation. Cholesterol is either from genetics, or more commonly, saturated fats - processed meats, fatty meats, butter, cream, cakes, oil.

Vegans have far lower cholesterol than meat eaters and everyone should avoid processed foods where possible.

I had high cholesterol as a carb-consuming veggie. It’s now much lower as a low-carb pesceterian. Appreciate it’s a sample of 1 but…….

I always see this argument on MN.. Vegetarian cultures across the world don't eat avocados or almond milk. Why would I? 40% of India isn't eating avocadoes:)

I dont eat 'plant based shit' either. I just eat plants.

I know - I’ve travelled extensively in South India. I’m talking about people in the UK who get het up about people eating meat claiming it’s bad for the environment yet go on to eat things exactly like avocados, almond milk and lots of other ingredients that are ‘local’ in India but certainly not in the UK.

To be veggie in the UK and only eat local and seasonal fruits and vegetables is very hard.

I don't eat meat, but occasionally have fish
Raw honey has really helped my energy levels

Not sanctimonious at all. Get some steak down you ffs

DdraigGoch · 21/03/2023 13:28

I eat meat most days. If I go more than three days without I feel run down. Though eggs are quite good too.

Notadramallama · 21/03/2023 13:59

not for 40 years. I give blood every 4 months, and lift weights/run with no issues at all. I am not pale with dark circles under my eyes either 😂

Yes good quality meat and fish are so expensive, it definitely needs to be factored in.

Offal is very nutrient dense though. Kidneys and liver would provide you with more for less.

limitedperiodonly · 21/03/2023 14:59

@DdraigGoch I agree. I love all kinds of offal including brains but not tripe. I've tried it but don't like the texture.

But lots of people who eat meat find offal disgusting, so I wouldn't make them eat it. Any more than I'd make someone who didn't eat meat have a steak or some wafer thin ham. People are allowed their likes and dislikes, even meat eaters.

TheGuv1982 · 21/03/2023 15:13

Everyday, though try to avoid processed stuff.

“Try” is doing a lot of heave lifting.

Yes, meat and eggs everyday

Im sure vegans are tired all the time but think it’s normal

Yes, particularly because nutrient depletion will come on over a period of time. You only notice the difference when you have meat again and the fog lifts overnight.
